Amid mounting controversy around his film Jana Nayagan, actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Thalapathy Vijay addressed supporters in Thanjavur on Wednesday and spoke publicly about the delay for the first time.

Jana Nayagan was earlier slated for release on January 9, 2026. The film is currently facing issues with the Central Board of Film Certification, leading to an indefinite postponement. The development has triggered debate among fans and political observers, especially with Vijay now actively campaigning in Tamil Nadu.

During his speech, Vijay linked the film’s delay with what he described as attempts to silence him. “Listen to what I say, the next government will be a TVK government. Fishermen, remain hopeful; your protection will be fully ensured. During the release of the film Jana Nayagan, many people raised their voices in support. Even our Chief Minister voiced his support. I thank them for that. Chief Minister, you may try to silence me, but you cannot silence every Vijay in every household. They have already begun their campaign,” he said.

An official notice dated February 14 informed patrons that Jana Nayagan would not release before April 30. The statement asked viewers with pending refunds to contact theatres and assured priority booking access for members once a new date is announced. However, the makers have not yet confirmed a revised release plan.

The film features Pooja Hegde, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain in key roles. It is expected to be Vijay’s final project before he steps away from acting after a 33 year career.

The professional turbulence comes amid intense scrutiny of his personal life. Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha, has filed a divorce petition in the Chengalpattu district court, alleging an extramarital relationship. She described the marriage as irretrievably broken and cited emotional distress. She has sought dissolution of marriage, permanent alimony and the right to reside in their Neelankarai home until the matter is settled.

With elections nearing, both the legal case and the film delay have placed Vijay under sharp public focus.
