I am not an expert topic maker nor do I make topic often, but this regional film compelled me to post it here.

I just finished watching this malayalam movie in Nee stream platform and I am spellbound. We often discuss about feminist movie or women oriented movie but the truth is there are only few movies like English Vinglish, Queen, thapad which actually address the issues women face in our society.

Great Indian Kitchen portrays the subtle patriarchy and how it is deeply rooted in everyone .It doesn't preach us , it is too realistic ,to a point that few of the scenes are repetitive, one might feel disgusting, but when you watch the film we will understand that the repetition, the disgusting scenes ,the lag , everything is intentional. Hats off to the director for his guts to make a film on daily routine of women , the untouchability related to menstruations and many other issues which is considered to be trivial.

I hope if Bollywood gets a remake right , they cast someone who knows subtle acting ,someone like Priyanka, konkana Sen Sharma or Vidhya balan and most importantly they shoot it in a traditional house which is in village rather than in ultra modern apartments.

All movie lovers and those who is slightly interested in women oriented subject this movie is worth watching, pondering and discussing about . It has English subtitles.

I will watch it whenever I have time.

Hope the essence is not lost in translation though.

No. This is a kind of movie which conveys the message through acting and incidents rather than with dialogues. In fact one of my north Indian friend recommended this movie to me.

👍

Update:

I am not sure how much another director is willing to address the movie's religious part. Jeo Baby (Director) is so direct with his criticism; He started his work in showbiz by doing a movie about a gay couple while studying in a Christian management college, had a tiff with priests and got expelled. He is very verbal about the contempt for the priests and religions, that's why he started the movie with "Thanks Science" instead of "Thank God".

The songs sung by the Dalit maid was written by one of my friend who is a Dalit activist. Jeo baby saw that on Facebook asked her for the movie. It is written in Paluva language (a secret language from the paraya dalit community in Kerala, also used as a code language to escape from the attacks of dominant castes).

Thanks for sharing your review of this movie, dear! 🤗

Either I’ll pay $2 in Nee stream platform to watch this movie or I’ll wait for this movie to be available in other places.

It's such an uncomfortable watch. Like it's so real that you feel so angry watching it.

Seriously every woman in india watching it can identify with it. How much of our time and energy goes in this thankless unacknowledged work. Why don't we get more angry about it

Fantastic

In India they gave option for 5 day subscription and the charge is less comparing to watching movie in multiplex. I don't regret paying 140 for this movie , it is worth every penny. I wish everyone watch this movie especially the men .

Very well said! 👍

All Domestic work like Cooking, Doing Dishes, Washing Clothes, etc is a woman’s department only.. be it in India or abroad.. in upper middle class or lower middle class or poor families.

Only people who are born into elite families or are married into elite families, servants are there to do all the domestic chores.
