Deepika and to some extent Alia/Anushka.....Not sure why Kat's movies with less popular actors have been such big disasters even though she is famous among guys

Male stars whose movies don't get good opening (anymore) their fans will say, "None." Kyun ki sharam ki baat hai.

Any well-known, popular actress. But the extent of audience pull is obviously limited.

Also it is extremely difficult to answer this question in isolation. It almost always depends on the subject, the director, the trailer, among other things.

That is why the actress with the biggest BO opening can also suddenly give a much weaker opening with the next release.

Usually with the men, this kind of irregularity is rare, because 1) their fan base is extremely loyal 2) most of their script choices play to their strengths, they rarely move away from their well trodden path of success (exceptions are there but very far and few between)

Another key point, male actors have the biggest power because men have a lot of male fan base supporting them, whereas female actors lack that kind of support from women. So most women depend on the male fan base (who supports them as long as the actress is successful in sexually being attractive or with titillation etc.). Once the actress gets married or gets older than early 30s, slowly this temporary fan base moves to the new girls on the block - this phenomenon hardly happens with the men as their support continues to consolidate among men and women alike.

Women who support a male actor out of sexual attraction do not discriminate on the basis of marital status or age (the older the better - here is where art imitates life. The older male is fine because it is also fine in the society. Hardly anyone even points out the age gap between Ritesh Genelia, but always raises eyebrows about age gap between Nick and Priyanka. Why? Older male ok, but older female taboo. This kind of a normalization of older males with younger females percolates down to the industry and therefore you would rarely find a 30 year old cishet man shipping a 40+ year old actress as hard as a 30 year old cishet woman would ship a 40+ year old male actor).

Okay, I obviously digressed from naming the actresses to giving a long explanation, but I think I needed to say this and I am glad I finally did, whether one agrees or not with what I think.

Indian movie audience is also male-dominated. So there's that. And even with men supporting or being fan of the actresses, its not necessary that they will watch their solo films in theaters. Only if they are paired opposite a popular or favorite actor, their brand value increases to attract audience to theaters.

But its true that women too don't support actresses and we can't blame men for that. Even on television where women are the dominating audience, women tend to get attracted more to the male stars. Even on IF's celebrity ranking its always a male star who tops the list, despite TV forums and IF in general being heavily dominated by women.

You did NOT have to go that hard. A round of applause, one of the best responses on this forum.
