Katrina at her peak definitely drew audience to the theatre.
sunny leone in her days with a certificate have 2 all time openings for women centric movies
kat in her days
dp n alia
shradha also with all packaging
None ....the day they will get the flak for the failures they will start getting credit for the opening....till then if its a female centric movie...its all about the trailer, the content , songs and how much curiosity the movie has managed to create.
Well if it's about Solo movie hits, then Rani Mukerji has done Mardaani and Hichki and both were Hits.
Deepika Padukone, the last female superstar of Bollywood, is yet to have a female centric film in her career let alone give a hit.
I like Katrina. She doesn't have much acting talent but her presence is pleasing on screen.
Sridevi and Madhuri just them. The others are big stars maybe but not superstar at bo.
For me, it's 95% been about seeing amazing women on the big screen. I watched Sridevi's English Vinglish 3 times in the theatre. When Madhuri came back with Aaja Nachle, I also watched it 3 times. Kangana's Queen prompted me to make 6 trips to the cinema.
If I like the actress and there is a good buzz about a film or performance then I will make an effort to see it in the cinema. Doesn't matter whether it is Deepika or Priyanka or Alia or Vidya.
Any well-known, popular actress. But the extent of audience pull is obviously limited.
Also it is extremely difficult to answer this question in isolation. It almost always depends on the subject, the director, the trailer, among other things.
That is why the actress with the biggest BO opening can also suddenly give a much weaker opening with the next release.
Usually with the men, this kind of irregularity is rare, because 1) their fan base is extremely loyal 2) most of their script choices play to their strengths, they rarely move away from their well trodden path of success (exceptions are there but very far and few between)
Another key point, male actors have the biggest power because men have a lot of male fan base supporting them, whereas female actors lack that kind of support from women. So most women depend on the male fan base (who supports them as long as the actress is successful in sexually being attractive or with titillation etc.). Once the actress gets married or gets older than early 30s, slowly this temporary fan base moves to the new girls on the block - this phenomenon hardly happens with the men as their support continues to consolidate among men and women alike.
Women who support a male actor out of sexual attraction do not discriminate on the basis of marital status or age (the older the better - here is where art imitates life. The older male is fine because it is also fine in the society. Hardly anyone even points out the age gap between Ritesh Genelia, but always raises eyebrows about age gap between Nick and Priyanka. Why? Older male ok, but older female taboo. This kind of a normalization of older males with younger females percolates down to the industry and therefore you would rarely find a 30 year old cishet man shipping a 40+ year old actress as hard as a 30 year old cishet woman would ship a 40+ year old male actor).
Okay, I obviously digressed from naming the actresses to giving a long explanation, but I think I needed to say this and I am glad I finally did, whether one agrees or not with what I think.
^Agreed. More women need to support actresses. We have to do it consciously. Even we can be sexist in our choices and behavior.
