'Half Girlfriend' movie review: Not all Chetan Bhagat books should be made into films
Anita Iyer
Filed on May 18, 2017

The film and the characters fail to connect with the audience

Half Girlfriend is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's book by the same title. The story is simple - a boy from Patna, Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor) enrolls himself into St. Stephen's College, Delhi and meets a modern girl from a rich family Riya (Shraddha Kapoor). He cannot speak a single flawless sentence in English and his character follows the Bihari accent through the movie.

He falls for her but she agrees to be his half girlfriend - more than a friend but less than a girlfriend. Arjun is playing a north Indian guy in the film, and stays true to his character throughout.

We have seen Shraddha play the girl-next-door roles in her earlier films and here she is playing the basketball, wants to play at a New York caf as a musician but none of this is convincing.

You don't connect with any of these characters and that is where the problem starts. They come, do their scenes and exit without leaving an impact on you. The film lacks real emotions - however hard they try, you aren't able to get involved in the narrative.

Vikrant Massey as his friend, Seema Biswas as the boy's mother appear to take the story forward but end up adding too much drama even in scenes that could have been handled without going overboard.

Mid-way in the film you wonder that if the English language is such an impediment, why won't he just learn it instead of cribbing till the last line in the film?

The story unwantedly brings in twist and turns, even as you eagerly wait for it to end. I can remember at least one place where I heaved a sigh of relief assuming the movie was finally over, only for it to go on for another half hour. This was the general feeling of the audience watching the morning show. Mohit Suri's films are known for good music and thankfully the songs appear as a breather in this painful storytelling.

Director Mohit Suri tries to weave a love story from a yet another Chetan Bhagat novel but fails miserably. After all, not all books popular with the youth need to be adapted on the big screen and this film is testimony to it. Yes, Kai Po Che, 2 States and 3 Idiots were blockbusters but don't forget Hello was also an adaption of Chetan's One Night @ the Call Centre.

After enduring the pointless movie for 2 hours and 15 minutes, I am glad I didn't waste my time reading the book. The million dollar question remains - if the book didn't really get good reviews, why would anybody make it into a film in the first place?

Watch the film if you have absolutely nothing to do this week or are an Arjun, Shraddha Kapoor fan.

Half Girlfriend' review: Easy on the eye

This girl-meets-regular boy love story is saved by good actors doing a great job

Published: 15:41 May 18, 2017 Gulf News

You have seen it all before, you know what's going to happen next, yet you refuse to give up on it.

Half Girlfriend, the romantic drama featuring Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor, evokes those sentiments.

Arjun plays the Hindi-speaking Madhav who falls in love with Riya, a privileged popular girl from his anglophone-dominated college, played by Shraddha. She's out of his league. He knows it, she knows it but that doesn't stop them from forging ahead.

Just like any solid Bollywood potboiler, it is love at first sight for the hero who is convinced that he has met the woman of his dreams in a snap. The vision of her playing basket ball is enough for him to take that giant leap of faith.

But Riya isn't as impulsive as the love-struck Madhav. She is the quintessential elitist who has a poignant backstory. She's troubled, but isn't such a train-wreck that she would try and self-destruct.

Based on Chetan Bhagat's novel, this film explores the world of love, heartaches and passion in an engaging manner.

Shraddha shines in her role as Riya. And that isn't an easy job, because she's the one with economic advantages here and her conflict can seem trivial. Imagine, she's rich enough to carry Chanel bags to college and is known to host lavish birthday brunches at her white palatial mansion, so making the viewer empathetic to her personal troubles isn't an easy job. But Shraddha carries off her role with immense grace.

Arjun has a firm grip on Madhav, that underdog who speaks English with a heavy Indian vernacular accent, in the first half.

He sheds his urbane real-life persona and digs deep into the world of Madhav who considers himself a misfit among the posh Delhi crowd. He plays that goofy, gentle-giant guy to perfection.

The chemistry between these two is crackling. They seem like a natural fit together and though you have seen similar rich girl-meets-regular boy love stories before, the actors breathe life into a jaded story. Kapoor's simpleton act doesn't grate either.

It's the second half that gets a tad dramatic. Madhav's borderline obsessive behaviour to get Riya back into his life isn't always a pleasant watch.

The scenes, set in New York, in which he is on this mad quest to pin down the elusive Riya is exhausting to watch. At some point, you wonder why he doesn't step back and analyse his own chaotic existence. The climax too is a bit of a downer, too.

The supporting cast does a splendid job of adding some meat to the story. Seema Biswas, as Madhav's strong, but bizarrely conservative mother, is a treat to watch. Her schizophrenic attitude towards clutching on to her traditional beliefs and seemingly progressive attitude towards girl education should have been culled out better. However, the focus of this film is on the tempestuous love story between Riya and Madhav. Despite that, Madhav's mates from college are a hoot and perform well in their limited screen time.

Watch this film if you are in the mood for a romance punctuated by a generous dose of drama, tears and heartache. You may not become any wiser in love with this film, but you are not going to die of boredom either.

Half Girlfriend movie review: Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor's crackling chemistry is the heart and soul of this film

Not had your fill of mushy romantic entertainers Bollywood specialises in this year? Then you should really check out this week's release, Half Girlfriend. Starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead, Half Girlfriend is based on the popular author Chetan Bhagat's (who is also one of the producers here) best-selling novel by the same name. It is directed by Mohit Suri, who is known for making films like Kalyug, Raaz 2, Awarapan, Aashiqui 2. After 2 States, will Chetan Bhagat prove lucky for Arjun Kapoor once again? Will Shraddha Kapoor return to her hit status after the debacles of Rock On 2 and Ok Jaanu? Read our review to find out...

What's it about

I haven't read the book, neither am a huge fan of the author, but there's something about the story of a clash of languages, ideologies, and love in the midst of it all that sort of drew my attention and got me curious to watch Half Girlfriend. Also the fact that an extremely urban Arjun Kapoor taking the risk of playing a rural boy struggling to speak an unfamiliar dialect, was reason enough to watch the film. Half Girlfriend is the story of Madhav Jha (Arjun) whose aspiration is to get admission in an English speaking college to pursue his passion for sports. Despite his linguistic challenge, Madhav is a sort of a prince in his own town in Bihar. A chance meeting with Riya (Shraddha Kapoor) who's the polar opposite to him in every sense, makes him realise that despite the communication challenges she's his destiny. But Riya isn't the sort to commit and even when she does, it's only partial - therein the concept of Half Girlfriend. The film is dramatic and over the top in certain scenes but where it connects with you is in the moments when Madhav exposes his vulnerability towards Riya. The second half is set in New York and full of trademark Mohit Suri tunes which have already made their mark on the charts.

What's hot

Half Girlfriend primarily works because of its lead pair and the conviction they bring to their characters. Arjun goes beyond the nuances of the accent and body language and digs deep to find a place he can reach to make Madhav believable. You sort of lose track of the cool and hip Arjun in the innocence and even rage of the rural Madhav. Despite the dramatic lines and phrases, Arjun uses his silence and speaks the most in the pauses when he's fumbling to communicate his feelings to Shraddha. Shraddha, despite delivering hits with Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, manages to have a genuinely likeable and convincing chemistry with Arjun. Her scene where Madhav tries to force himself on her is terrific. Mohit's technique of creating stand out scenes that blend in with the overall plotline is commendable. The music of Half Girlfriend is already a rage and the songs do play an important part in taking the story forward. Vikrant Massey in the role of Madhav' s roommate is terrific.

What's not

The first half has a better structure and seems more cohesive than what follows post the interval. There are some jarring and over the top moments that somewhat kill the feel of an organic love story that was beautifully coming together in the beginning. Also the portions before the big climax revelation are too jumpy, and feel disconnected. Suri takes more than just cinematic liberty to make the iconic India Gate look like a prop to have his characters mingle and chat!

What to do

Half Girlfriend has full drama and works primarily due to Arjun Kapoor's stellar performance and his crackling chemistry with Shraddha Kapoor.

Half Girlfriend Movie Review: Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor's Film Is A Total Dud

Half Girlfriend Movie Review: Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor in the film

Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Vikrant Massey, Rhea Chakraborty, Seema Biswas
Director: Mohit Suri
Rating: 1 star
Genre: Romance

Where do you go when you've had it with the world? Tradition and cinematic cliche suggest some far-removed nook hidden from civilisation, a secret spot known only to you, but Riya Somani - the titular heroine of Half Girlfriend - has her fortress of solitude bang in the heart of New Delhi, atop the most securely fortified monument in the country. Whenever she feels overwhelmed, Riya casually slips past armed guards, steps over a chain or two and clambers up India Gate, sitting on the top to rhapsodise about the view.

I wonder why more of us haven't tried this. Maybe take a barbecue grill up there, wave at the President every now and then?

"Meet me now on India Gate," she nonchalantly texts a boy who lives to obey her, and he scampers to the task, while I find myself hoping these harebrained characters would be caught and shot on sight. No such luck, alas.

Based on a book by Chetan Bhagat, Mohit Suri's new film is a preposterously dimwitted romance, irresponsible enough to lead on many a stalker-to-be. (The only good thing about this film is that it'll win you a round of charades, its full title being 'Half Girlfriend - Dost Se Zyada Girlfriend Se Kam'.)

The film is about Madhav Jha, a boy from Bihar who wants to study sociology but seems adamantly opposed to the idea of speaking the English language, an odd applicant for a college visibly modelled after St Stephens. At this college he spots a girl playing basketball, one who grimaces angrily even while drinking water, and the boy - who, in turn, consistently makes faces so gullible the actor's cheeks must have hurt - is immediately smitten enough to inform his mother he's found a reason to live in Delhi. Ambition and admission were evidently not enough.

Half Girlfriend Movie Review: Arjun Kapoor in a film still

Riya, willing to play ball with Madhav and go to movies with Madhav and to make out with Madhav, comes from a troubled family. This we know from a scene where she walks into her gigantic house, witnesses her father physically and verbally abusing her mother, and goes to her room, where she picks up a guitar and starts singing. Her dream, you see, is to perform in a New York bar.

But hold the phone: if she is indeed kissing this lad, aren't they together? What is all this bizarre 'half' girlfriend business if not, as I suspected, some clumsy way to describe the friendzone?
hrlf girlfriend

Half Girlfriend Movie Review: Shraddha Kapoor in a film still

For a friendzone this certainly isn't. (Thus I remain at sea about the meaning of the film's title.) Riya is visibly fond of Madhav and loves being with him, but, at 19, is wary of the girlfriend tag and what it may entail. All systems seem go: She's making him meet her folks, she's using the word 'us' to describe them, she's initiating the first kiss, she's singing lovesongs to him across a crowded lawn. This warmth is countered by bewildering bouts of insecurity from the otherwise devoted but semantically obsessed Madhav, who disregards her affectionate requests to take things slow by manhandling her, and snapping that she should bed him or buzz off. She chooses the latter.

The boy can't let go.

Despite what you may believe, or what the makers may have intended at some point during the production, this isn't the story of a sincere young man confounded by urban love and left helpless by an unidentified relationship. It is instead the story of a man-child with a one-track mind who misses the point of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and relentlessly pursues a girl who would rather feign death than be with him. He's a sulker with a martyr complex who repeatedly upends his own life and then whines about how he did it for her, leaving classes and jobs behind. Arjun Kapoor plays this lousy protagonist in a lumbering manner, slackjawed, forever nodding his head, and - in a misguided attempt to look simple - blankly smiling ear to ear.

Shraddha Kapoor is Riya, shrill and insubstantial, one of the film's many characters who insist on speaking in English without being good at it. The prize for mangling the language, however, must be shared by the actor playing Riya's father who, when shouting at her mother, sounds like he's discovering words for the first time, and by Riya's suitor, a man with an unbelievably cartoonish 'what-ho' accent who calls a simple diamond pendant 'baroque.' There is some reprieve in the form of Vikrant Massey, acing both English and Bihari tonality, and who, with the first smile he flashes - simple, confident, assured - demonstrates the straightforward vibe Madhav needed.

He is not the highlight, though. Also starring in this film, after much noble talk of philanthropy and toilets for the girl-child, is Bill Gates. As in, a still photograph on Gates digitally glued onto another man's body. Words cannot describe how mortifying this sequence is, a cameo to rank right up there with the time Cindy Crawford played Dev Anand's mother.

Half Girlfriend is about two halfwits who belong together. It is a film that claims to celebrate romance and undying passion and gates both Bill and Indian, but all it does is applaud a spoilt man who believes he's a scapegoat. He is not. He is, in fact, a man who hands the woman he loves a butcher knife, gets down on all fours, sticks his neck over a earthen pot of biryani and goes baaa. Off with his head.

Half Girlfriend Movie Review

CRITIC'S RATING: 3.0/5

Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes

BIHAR AND DELHI HAVE ALWAYS SEEMED STAR-CROSSED

Story: Madhav Jha (Arjun) a rustic boy from Bihar who is drawn to his college-mate, Riya Somani (Shraddha), an affluent English-speaking girl from Delhi. There's just one hitch here. Riya is willing to go thus far and no further; Madhav continues being obsessed with her. Will the Bihar boy and the Delhi girl make it past the half-way mark?

Review: The assumption that many have read Chetan Bhagat's 2014 novel of the same name should be a safe one because Bhagat's fluff has its own following. But, Half Girlfriend is definitely not one of his best works. So, Mohit Suri (Aashiqui2, Ek Villain) gives us a celluloid outing that is thoda fun and largely exasperating.

The fun bit comes from watching the Simrao boy (pronounced bai) struck by a thunderbolt when he spots the Delhi dame. And the brave attempts chalk makes in going for cheese is also endearing. Imagine this; he can barely speak a smattering of English and she behaves like she is a rather late-in-the day British import. Yet, it's understandable that they find an escape in basketball and music. Before long, Madhav's infatuation becomes a fatal attraction. His college-buddy Shailesh(Vikrant Massey, pitch-perfect performance) warns him of the danger of driving into a one-way street but Madhav, who is perennially in Majnu mode by then, pays no heed.

The frustrating bit for Madhav and for the audience is that Riya is commitment-phobic. Her dost se zyada but girlfriend se kum stance seems non-negotiable and stops you from investing in her halfway through the film.

Back to apna Madhav, fate smiles on him a couple of times later when his path crosses that of Riya's. And he chases her from Patna to New York (even dragging Bill Gates into proceedings) with a doggedness that should appeal to the countless stalkers, who shame society every day.

The first half breezes through, but post interval proceedings hang; in tandem with the hangdog expression worn by the hero. Arjun is sincere, but seems too urban for an ideal 'Bihari' fit. And Shraddha, who looks her loveliest here, lacks gravitas.

As far as the ensemble music album goes--Manoj Muntashir's Phir Bhi Main Tumko Chahoonga, the only track that has real recall is lyrically-adequate but Mithoon's tune is not compelling enough. Finally, half girlfriend or boyfriend is that person many of us have encountered on campus. However, do we really want to relive those memories? It depends entirely on the mood.

Half Girlfriend movie review: Arjun, Shraddha in a half-baked and a quarter palatable film

EntertainmentUdita JhunjhunwalaMay, 19 2017 09:33:13 IST

#Arjun kapoor#Bollywood#Chetan bhagat#Half-girlfriend#Mohit suri#Movie review#Shraddha kapoor
2/5

Cast : Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Seema Biswas

Director
Mohit Suri

This is how Mohit Suri's Half Girlfriend starts: Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor), a student from Bihar, struggles to speak English during his college interview. Later he feels only half as good as the fancy Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor), who he adores.

While watching these scenes, it occurred to me that Half Girlfriend is something of a companion piece to Hindi Medium (this week's other release). At their core, both films have a class and language barrier. But this Mohit Suri adaptation of the (nauseatingly titled) Chetan Bhagat book is the love story of two people who breach the language hurdle and bond over basketball.

A still from Half Girlfriend. Image via Youtube.

Even till the end I remained unclear who Madhav is: Around Riya he's a buffoon, he's a puppet in the hands of his roommate, sometimes he's a boy proud of his identity whose English remains rusty even after three years in an elite New Delhi English Medium institution, and he's a mama's boy with royal lineage and a vision for equal education.

The story is told through Madhav's eyes and while there is a deliberately written in line about educating the girl child, it's mostly about his obsessive love for Riya.

Riya's terrific sports wear and hairstyles are more noticeable than her basketball moves, but it's enough for Madhav. Popular, posh and also hurting because of the violence at home, Riya loses herself in song. To be correct, she sings one English song - Stay A Little Longer' - throughout the film.

Riya harbours a dream of becoming a jazz singer in New York. And what's Madhav's dream - to be with Riya. In an icky scene where she's resting in his hostel room, he goes all psycho on her, leading to the half girlfriend fully breaking up with him. Cut to her inviting Madhav to her wedding to rich NRI type.

Madhav now pathetically mopes around for years after their bizarrely described half girlfriend-boyfriend relationship dials down to zero. He graduates, returns to mummy (Seema Biswas) and finally finds a mission - get funding from Bill Gates to expand the family-run all-boys school to include girls as well.

And then one day, when he's in Patna to make a presentation to the Bill Gates Foundation, he bumps into Riya. Riya helps Madhav with his English language presentation to the Foundation, he introduces her to his hometown Simrao, the school, his suspicious and protective mother. It seems the half status might is growing into full, till Riya runs off again.

half-girlfriend-1280

The film stays quite close to Chetan Bhagat's book.

Since I have not read the book, I didn't expect Bill Gates to show up in the film (his bespectacled smiling face is superimposed on someone else's neck, inadvertently giving us the one laugh-out-loud moment this film urgently needed). Neither was I aware of the contents of Riya's goodbye letter that crush Madhav and propel him out of his inertia to New York City.

Those who have read Half Girlfriend say this is quite a faithful adaptation, and perhaps even better than Chetan Bhagat's novel. I shudder to think how laborious the book must have been given the paper-thin story.

What does half girlfriend even mean? Not friends with benefits, not a three-and-a-half days a week arrangements.

Maybe it's described best by Madhav's roomie Sailesh (Vikrant Massey, a single spark in dullsville): a little more than friend and quite a bit less than boyfriend. Whatevs!

Arjun Kapoor's expressions make sudden shifts, and the changing length of his beard ensures you notice this even more. He's described himself as the "quintessential Chetan Bhagat hero", but Madhav Jha is not heroic and Kapoor plays him like a nothing more than a country bumpkin and stalker. As for the part of Riya, any twenty-something actress could have pulled off this two dimensional part.

Mohit Suri keeps the narrative ticking along at a steady pace, though surprisingly for a Suri film, the music is a let down. The costumes loudly proclaim "wealthy, urban" versus "provincial, simple".

A great deal of effort has gone into making the basketball scenes authentic. If only some of that had gone into improving the dialogue, especially the incredibly awkward English lines, and Arjun Kapoor's Bihari accent.

Half Girlfriend is strictly for fans of the book or the two leads, because at best it's quarter tolerable.

Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor) is a student hailing from the royal family of Bihar's Simrao. He has been brought up by his mother, who runs a school in the locality. He gets admitted in Delhi's St. Stephens College under the sports quota where he meets Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor), and instantly falls in love with her. Riya, a Delhi girl belonging to a rich family, speaks fluently in English, which impresses Madhav as he cannot speak English properly (Yes, we Indians are obsessed with spoken English skills). Riya becomes friends with Madhav and the two bond over basketball, which is a common favourite with both of them. Gradually they start hanging out together, which Madhav thinks is a date. He falls for Riya but at the same time is well aware of the fact that he will not be able to fit in her English medium world'.

Half Girlfriend Review

Half Girlfriend Review: Script Analysis

Can someone fake cancer? To start with, I found that cheap. A little bit of sensibility is expected from an author be it a book or a movie script. Only those who have lost someone close to cancer, know the pain. I am not divulging who said this to whom here as I would be giving away the entire story then. The half-baked story lacks depth and so does the lead characters, with whom the viewer will really not be able to relate.

Coming to Madhav Jha's character, he seems to be sensible initially but loses his senses after falling for the wrong girl, who is unable to understand his emotions and does not hesitate to leave him for another man. And if he is so bent on impressing Riya (which seems to be the only purpose of his life), why doesn't he just enrol himself in a spoken English course?

Riya Somani is confused. She doesn't know who she loves, she doesn't care for those who love her and seems to be devoid of emotions at times. Riya tells Madhav that she can be his half girlfriend but does not care to explain whatever that means!

Half Girlfriend Review: Star Performance

Arjun Kapoor is good and tries his best to keep the movie going. However, he needs to work a little more on his expressions which at times seem repetitive.

Shraddha Kapoor is okay and can do a lot more than just thigh show for sure. She has the potential of doing better.

Vikrant Massey impresses in the role of a loving and caring friend.

Rhea Chakraborty does a good job in her cameo.

Half Girlfriend Review: Direction, Music

Queens and wives of rich zamindars had a room allotted for them in their havelis where they would go and weep or sulk if they were angry or upset or disturbed. For Riya Somani, that room seems to be the top of India Gate, which she climbs every now and then as if it is the terrace of her own house! And strangely enough, the guards never notice her or perhaps she becomes invisible in front of them!

A large amount of camerawork goes into capturing Shraddha Kapoor's thighs from every possible angle, perhaps even more than it focuses on her face! Also, her character lacks dimensions.

We know about the director's penchant for including songs in a love story but too many of them disrupt the (already boring) film's continuity. It is especially difficult to sit through the second half without yawning. Popcorns may come handy if you really want to stay awake! The film appears to be amateurish at times and this is definitely not the movie we expect from Mohit Suri, who boasts of films like Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain, Kalyug and more.

Arijit Singh delivers an excellent number, Main Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga and Ash King's voice gives a magical touch to Baarish, while the rest of the songs are simply redundant. Riya Somani, who aspires to be a singer at New York's live bars, unfortunately, knows only one song, Stay A Little Longer, which she sings throughout the film, including once in Hindi. Her acquired accent (sung by Anushka Shahaney) sounds funny at times and was absolutely not required. The same applies for her another song, Lost Without You.

Half Girlfriend Review: The Last Word

I would recommend going to a restaurant or caf, chatting with friends, reading a good book, getting a spa done or whatever, just whatever that makes you happy and keeps you occupied during the weekend rather than watching this boring, silly tale. If you are indeed planning to watch Half Girlfriend, don't tell me that I didn't warn you before! I couldn't rate it more than a single star.
