Half Girlfriend Set For Good First Day

Half Girlfriend is looking at a good first day with collections set to be around 10 crore nett. It is the fifth best opening of the year after Bahubali (Hindi), Raees, Jolly LLB 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The film has easily beaten a bigger film like Kaabil. That film had a clash but even here with Bahubali so strong and Hindi Medium also taking up 1000 screens it was like a clash. These two factors would have hit Half Girlfriend around 10%. The collections are average in places like Mumbai city and Bangalore but has done very well in centres like Jaipur, Surat, Patna and Lucknow. Generally the A and B centres are good be it multiplexes or single screens.

The film has costs of around 50 crore including promotion and advertising and this 10 crore nett start puts it in a good position. Just normal Saturday growth will see the film become a success and if it holds Monday onward it may well even emerge a HIT

The other release Hindi Medium fared poorly with collections likely to be around 2.50 crore nett. Madaari another Irfan Khan film had opened lower at 2 crore nett but that the idea is not really to compete with that film as it was so bad but even this is not much better in terms of opening. It will need huge growth on Saturday and then Monday to be like Friday if it is to do anything at the box office. That is a big ask but has been done before

Having read the book, I didn't expect anything great from the movie. But a critic pretty much summed it up for me when he mentioned that HALF-GIRLFRIEND is a 'bad movie from a bad book'. In the book, you at least get why Madhav is the way he is, Riya's back story (I don't remember the details, but I think it had something to do sexual abuse when she was a child), and why Madhav's mother is the way she is, but it doesn't translate on-screen.

It's up to the actors and screenplay to adapt it well, and well, they don't really do much. I didn't enjoy the performances much: Arjun and Shraddha were pretty bland together, and Arjun's Bihari didn't really sound authentic. The performances could have been way better if Sushant and Kriti were cast instead: Sushant would have really suited the role of Madhav, especially with the way he talks etc, and Kriti would have suited the tall, basketball player from a rich Delhi family. That being said, from the supporting cast, Vikrant Massey stands out with a more believable Bihari accent and overall strong performance as Arjun's room-mate.

Overall, it's probably not a bad one-time watch if you haven't read the book, but I wouldn't really bother watching it again. The songs are decent, the first half [set up, how Arjun and Shraddha meet, their 'love' story etc] is watchable, but stuff like Shraddha meeting Arjun on the top of the India Gate and the terrible CGI of Bill Gates on a random white dude were W*F-worthy.

The book itself was so bad I wonder why they made a movie out of it and on the top of it take Arjun Kapoor as a lead actor

10 cr for this one and that means BW will continue to churn out films like these. The book was boring and Arjun tries hard to be and act like a Bihar boy but Vikrant nails the role. Shradha as usual doesnt bing anything much, she is boring.
