The Delhi High Court commented on Tuesday regarding the legal dispute over the estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur. The court called the disagreement between his mother Rani Kapur, his wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, and other parties involved in the Rani Kapur Family Trust dispute a "sorry" situation, and reminded them of their "God-given wealth".
Delhi HC suggests Priya Kapur, Rani Kapur to settle issue through meditation
On Tuesday, the High Court proposed that Rani, Priya, and others, including Karisma Kapoor's children, settle their disagreements through mediation. Justice Mini Pushkarna's bench noted that everyone involved had experienced suffering and grief following Sunjay's passing. The court stressed the importance of the family moving forward with respect and preserving their relationships, and asked the lawyers to determine if the case could be sent to mediation.
In court, the judge inquired if the case could be referred to mediation. The bench stated, It’s a very sorry state of affairs. D No. 1 (Priya Kapur) should honour the plaintiff (Rani Kapur). All the parties are in pain, and they are grieving in one of the other forms. All of you have suffered losses, and you are suffering even now. God has given you financial wealth, and you all should live a life in a good manner.
The bench also added, All of you should try to respect the relations. D No 1 should also see that at the end of the day, it was the plaintiff’s husband who founded everything, not only the plaintiff, but also the other children and the grandchildren should share that booty. Families are involved, but the way forward is that you all should resolve the dispute in a peaceful manner; the blessing should not turn into a curse.
Rani Kapur’s lawsuit against Priya Kapur
This follows the High Court's issuance of summons to Priya and others last month regarding a lawsuit filed by Rani. In her suit, Rani, aged 80, requested the court to invalidate the family trust. She alleged that the trust, established in her name in October 2017, was based on "forged, fabricated, and fraudulent" documents.
Rani also sought an order to prevent Priya and her grandchildren from using or acting on behalf of the RK Family Trust. She claimed that her late husband, Surinder Kapur, was the only beneficiary of the estate and that assets were fraudulently transferred to the trust.
Justice Mini requested Priya and other defendants, including Sunjay’s children with Karisma Kapoor, to submit their written arguments. A notice was issued regarding Rani’s request for interim relief. The court declined to issue an order to maintain the estate's status quo, stating that responses were needed before any decisions could be made.
Sunjay passed away on June 12, 2025, after collapsing during a polo match in England due to a reported cardiac arrest. Karisma and Sunjay’s children also filed a petition contesting the validity of their father’s will.
