Viola Davis most certainly swung for the fences when it came to her Oscars speech.

The actress, who won her first Academy Award on Sunday night, delivered a long and rambling speech after nabbing the Best Supporting Actress gong for Fences.

Viola, 51, broke down in tears as she opened her speech, which went overtime by over two minutes, with a metaphor about a graveyard.

'There's one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered " and that's the graveyard,' she began through tears.

'People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell? And i say, "Exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories,'" she said.

'We are the only profession to celebrate what it means to live a life. So here's to [Fences playwright/screenwriter] August Wilson, who exhumed " and exalted " ordinary people.'

It was also a crowning achievement as she became the first black actor to ever receive an Oscar, Emmy, and a Tony.

As expected, Viola Davis won the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in "Fences." As soon as she took the stage, everyone knew we were in for a heck of a speech.

At the end of the long speech Viola had tears in her eyes as she said: 'I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.'

What about Doctors, nurses, police and fireman personnel, teachers, real journalists who do stories about real people, reporters who work in war zones, humanitarians etc. ?

Good to know she loves her profession. She is a fantastic actor... 😃

Doctors who work in maternity ward are the most blessed.

I am currently a medical student, trust me, we celebrate life too 😆 maybe not the same way actors do, but we do nonetheless

Yes, love her passion for work? But don't you think that part of her speech was a little offensive and conceited?

"We are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life" Ufff

What does she means by that!

I think she jumbled up a lot. This is one time we can give them a pass. If she makes a habit of it, then yes she is in red. It is her moment of happiness. 😃

I thought about this too..after the speech ended.. Can we imagine the world minus any profession? All professions help keep society together.

I'd say that acting is one of the few professions that connects to viewers on a personal level. It connects differently to every viewer but it does touch you personally.

As for celebrating life, i kinda get it...because it is one of the few professions that is imitation of life and solely that, solely aims to imitate life and to connect to the viewer, if not pass on a message.

it is personal for the actor too, to pursue every minute he spends in this profession, he has to put himself in someone's shoes(someone as in character, and also according to his capacity of understanding life) and it is personal affair for each actor. And not only do they derive a happiness and are passionate about the art of acting - exploring human emotions - exploring psyche of the human, but they aim to touch a viewer - everything about it is just purely personal.

I'd say one of the few professions that is totally personal on both ends, let's leave money/politics out of this :-)

And that is why what she said makes sense although it does not sound politically correct.

EDIT - It is personal, and thus feels close to life.. Anyone can watch, anyone from any profession can enjoy this art. We may never come to interface with, say a software engineer although what they do makes our functioning as a society easy, it may be personally affecting both but we are not so directly or so consciously face to face (the engineer and me) and most of the times we forget our gratitude towards engineers :p

that's just an example.. There are other professions like medicine that brings the giver and receiver up close in personal way.

But that was not her point and my criticism has nothing to do with PC ( even though HW is hell bent on PC )

My objection is telling they are THE ONLY PEOPLE ON THE PLANET who do it and her huge ego, it's the putting down of other professions...
She and her HW buddies need a dose of humility and reality check (I think her speech was prepared bcz she was expected to win)

Actors don't hold the exclusive license on living life or celebrating one., no matter how gifted, talented they are, no matter how much they connect to their audience and how much they breathe 'life' into their characters

Bold - It might be a miserable existence, but you won't be dead without actors... it's a luxury not a necessity... But we need some professions like farmers, doctors, nurses etc to survive, our very existence depends on them

Your quality of life will be really bad without teachers, psychologists, cops, firefighters, soldiers, plumbers etc

That is not what she meant. She meant the bad part of life along with the good. In which profession do you celebrate a person's failure? In which profession do you cherish the down more than the up? In which profession is a failed person worth anything? Other than story telling both on pages and screen I can't think of any other profession that celebrates life like that.
