Afghanistan vs South Africa

Cricket rarely follows a script, but even by T20 standards, this one spiralled into pure madness.

What looked like a routine group stage clash between South Africa and Afghanistan at the T20 World Cup 2026 quickly turned into one of the most chaotic thrillers of the tournament. For a large part of the contest, it seemed straightforward. South Africa had posted a challenging 188, a total that felt competitive but manageable on a good batting surface. Afghanistan, spirited as ever, began their chase with intent, but few would have predicted just how close they would get.

As the innings unfolded, the momentum kept shifting. Afghanistan refused to back down. Boundaries arrived at crucial moments, partnerships kept the scoreboard ticking, and the pressure slowly crept onto the South African camp. What once appeared to be a comfortable defence turned into a nerve wracking finish. In the end, Afghanistan clawed their way to 187, falling just one run short of the target and forcing the game into a dramatic tie.

And when a T20 ends in a tie, the theatre only intensifies. Enter the Super Over.

Afghanistan carried their late surge straight into the one over shootout. With confidence flowing and nothing to lose, they went hard from ball one. Clean hitting and sharp running powered them to 17 runs in the Super Over, setting South Africa a stiff target of 18 in just six deliveries. It was a total that demanded precision and nerve.

What followed, however, defied belief. South Africa responded with equal aggression, matching Afghanistan shot for shot. The tension was unbearable, every ball loaded with consequence. Then came the moment no one saw coming. The Super Over itself ended in a tie.

Yes, a tied Super Over.

The stadium descended into disbelief. Players stood stunned. Fans could barely process what they had witnessed. One Super Over had not been enough to separate the sides, and suddenly, the match demanded another.

From a seemingly ordinary group fixture to absolute banana town, this South Africa versus Afghanistan clash delivered chaos, drama and edge of the seat entertainment in the most outrageous fashion imaginable. Stay tuned as we await the final innings of this match as we wait for the Afghanistan batsmen to come out on the pitch to chase 24 runs against South Africa in the SECOND SUPER OVER.

Keshav Maharaj bowl a WIDE ball but it's all over

Keshav Maharaj did bring in a bit of a scare indeed where he was hit for three consecutive sixes from Gurbaaz thus meaning Afghanistan needed one more six off the last ball which despite a worrying wide ball earlier, did not result in a bad ball later. Maharaj bowled another wide-length ball as Gurbaaz wasn't able to loft hitting it but going straight to David Miller for an easy catch.

Mohammad Nabi & Azmatullah Omarzai bat; Keshav Maharaj to bowl

A MATCH TO REMEMBER!

Thus ended a stellar game of cricket and one to remember not just in the T20 World Cup but in limited overs cricket overall. There has barely been any instances where two super overs have been contested in a cricket match let alone World Cup but here it happened and what a game of cricket to witness and have fun with.
