Welcome to the Lakshman & Urmila appreciation thread, folks!
This thread is meant to be an inclusive discussion portal for the characters of Lakshman & Urmila, and any actor(s) currently portraying them, or who portrayed them in the past.
Discussions may be spiritual/religious in nature, or they may center on telelvision/movie actor(s) who portrayed these characters. This thread is a free reign for those of us who love Lakshman and Urmila (the characters) and also the actors who've portrayed them on television and/or movies.
The one and only rule of this thread is to be respectful in your language, and not to bash any actor(s) who've portrayed these characters. Criticisms are welcome, but no bashing or rude language. Let's keep this thread fun and enriching!

Lakshman was the third son of Ayodhya's King Dashrath, born of his second wife Sumitra. He had a twin brother, Shatrughan, but he was always closer to his elder half-brother, Ram, the son of Dashrath's first wife Kaushalya, while Shatrughan was closer to Bharat, the son of Dashrath's third wife Kaikeyi. Growing up, Ram and Lakshman were like twin brothers themselves. They were inseparable, and their love for each other transcended anything else in their life. Lakshman was known for his short-temper, particularly when he felt anyone was unjust to his beloved brother Ram. He never heard one word against Ram, and in turn Ram cherished and protected Lakshman as a father does his son. Legend has it that Lakshman was so devoted to serving Ram, that he had decided never to marry, because he would not be able to give his wife the appropriate love and attention. Little did he know that such a woman would enter his life that would change his decision!
Such a woman was Urmila, the biological daughter of Mithila's King Janak and his wife Sunaina. King Janak and Sunaina were childless when they adopted Sita, who was found while ploughing the Earth. After the adoption of Sita, Janak and Sunaina had a child of their own, Urmila, who became as close to Sita as Lakshman was to Ram. Urmila loved her elder sister, and along with their cousins Mandavi and Shrutakirti, the four sisters were inseparable. Under Sita's loving guidance, Urmila grew into a bright, clever and precocious young woman.
After Ram broke the Shiv dhanush and got betrothed to Sita, Urmila and Lakshman were also betrothed to each other by the elders of their family. Folklore has it that Lakshman and Urmila had a love story of their own, encouraged by their siblings Ram and Sita. One such folklore mentions Lakshman refusing to marry Urmila due to his devotion to Ram, but Urmila promising Lakshman that she will never come in-between his devotion. Seeing the steadfast love of such a sacrificial woman made Lakshman change his decision, and he finally agreed to marry Urmila.
Lakshman and Urmila had a fulfilling life together for the 12 years they spent in Ayodhya following their wedding, but then sorrow entered their lives when Kaikeyi banished Ram to the forest, and Lakshman and Sita decided to follow him. Urmila wished to go along with her husband, but Lakshman reminded her of her promise never to come in-between his devotion to Ram. He insisted that if Urmila came along, his love for her would prevent him from carrying out his duties to Ram and Sita. Lakshman requested Urmila to stay behind and offer support to Kaushalya and Sumitra, both of whom would lose their sons for 14 years. Urmila finally agreed, and it was with a heavy heart that she saw the two most important people of her life walk away. She was to be separated from Lakshman and Sita, both of whom meant the world to her.
Legend has it that Urmila was a great artist, and she spent the 14 years of her solitary life painting Ram, Sita and Lakshman in the forests as per her imagination. When she was not painting, she was serving Kaushalya and Sumitra, and doing her best to care for the family along with her cousins, Mandavi and Shrutakirti. It was not an easy time for Urmila, but she bore it with courage and bravery, for another legend has it that Lakshman made Urmila promise not to shed a single tear the whole time he was gone, for he wished to take the image of a smiling Urmila in his heart with him.
After the completion of 14 years, Ram, Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya. There are many folktales that describe Lakshman and Urmila's reunion, but one popular folktale is that Urmila was painting in her chamber when the trio returned, and she was so deeply focused in her work that she did not hear about their arrival. Lakshman, whose hair and beard had grown long and uncontrolled in the 14 years he was away, was a fearsome sight a she entered Urmila's chamber with a fierce step. Urmila, not recognizing her husband, stood up in anger and admonished the strange man who had the audacity to enter her chamber, and warned him that if her husband should come to know of his treachery, he would put an end to his life. Lakshman then burst into laughter and told Urmila that it was he, her husband, who had entered the chamber. Urmila did not believe him until Lakshman trimmed his hair and beard, and after that her joy knew no bounds. Her separation had finally ended!
Lakshman and Urmila lived a happy life together afterwards. They had two sons, Angad and Chandraketu. Valmiki Ramayan states that Chandraketu was also called "Malla" by his proud father because he was a master of wrestling.
Legend has it that Ram was often in a depressed mood due to the second exile of Sita and being separated from his wife and sons. Urmila, feeling pity on her brother-in-law, urged her husband to let Ram raise Angad and Chandraketu along with them. Lakshman was more than happy to agree with her request, and Ram loved his two nephews as if they were his own children. After Luv Kush returned to Ayodhya following Sita's departure, Ram divided his kingdom in half and gave one half to each of his sons. He did not want any bitterness or jealousy to foster between his brothers' sons, so Ram also bestowed kingdoms on each of his nephews. He conquered the kingdom of Karupadhadhesh and installed Angad and Chandraketu as the new kings of their respective capitals, Andavad and Chandrakanta.
After the coronation of all their sons, Urmila and her cousins, along with the three mothers, died with the passage of time. The one day, Yama Dharmaraja visited Lord Ram and had him promise that if anyone overheard their conversation, they would be put to death. Ram ordered Lakshman to stand guard outside his chamber so that no one would enter. Just then, Sage Durvasa arrived at Ayodhya and stated that if he did not meet Ram then and there, he would curse the entire Ayodhya with total annihilation. Lakshman decided to sacrifice his own life to save Ayodhya and intruded on Ram's meeting with Yama Dharmaraja. After Sage Durvasa was appeased, Sage Vasishta advised a grief-stricken Ram (who did not have the hands to kill his own dear brother) that forsaking an honorable soul was equal to giving them death, so Lakshman was ordered to desert Ayodhya and never return. Lakshman honored his brother's wishes and gave up his life in River Sarayu, attaining his original body as Adi Sesha before returning to Vaikunta to await the return of Vishnu.
Such is the story of Lakshman and Urmila. There are many folktales and legends that add to the beauty of their story, and they remain two of the most beloved characters of Ramayana.

Television has long since been a medium through which audience has learned about and connected with the ideal characters of our Hindu puranas. Lakshman and Urmila are no exception. People have always been curious about their relationship, how their love survived a 14-year long separation, and how they interacted with each other. Every director who has portrayed these characters in their shows did so with their own vision and interpretation of how the characters' relationship must have been back in that era. Due to a lack of authentic sources that focus on these characters, we may never know how Lakshman and Urmila's relationship truly was, but it is interesting to see how their characters have been portrayed through the ages by different actors. From being serious and mature to being comical and mischievous, these characters have undergone a vast change with each generation, but the couple remains close to our heart no matter how they are portrayed.
The characters of Lakshman and Urmila have been played by several accomplished actors through the years. Each of them brought out a different yet beautiful aspect of this divine couple.

reposting my comments from earlier thread:

2013 mahabharat actually was very much to the original script , they portrayed quite a few scenes correctly which were shown wrongly in 1993 sri krishna

Like the brahmasheera astra fired on uttara.

In 1993 Sri krishna , they showed that ashwadhama fires the brahmasheera on uttara's womb , but krishna protects it by countering it with sudarshan.

This is not true . Brahmasheera astra is strongest weapon in universe , it has no parallel , it contains power of brahma's 5 heads and is 4 times powerful as brahmastra

Only another brahmasheera can counter it.

So , this astra did kill the child in uttara's womb , krishna could no nothing to stop the weapon.

But he did resurrect the child later , as was shown correctly in 2013 version

That is why the boy was named Parikhshit , the one who has even conquered death.

It had some really nice scenes, like Krishna-Draupadi relation was dealt with brilliantly and so was Krishna-Arjuna scenes...but they butchered Karna...he was this confused soul that didn't knew what to do and of course Abhimanyi ko toh brat bana diya tha!
