"You're joking, right?" Manik managed to sputter in disbelief after some time. "You've got to be joking."

"I'm not joking, Manik," Nyonika said seriously. Her face was blank and her tone was calm. It took Manik some time to process her words and realize that his mother meant every bit of what she said.

"You can't throw me out of my own house," he stated.

"Your house?" Nyonika questioned instead. "This house is in my name, which makes it my house. How is it yours?"

"I-"

"I'll tell you how, Manik," Nyonika cut him off before he even started. "You live here because you're my son. But, as of this moment, I do not have a son anymore. He is dead to me, and I do not want a stranger in my house."

"I'm your son, you say? But when have you ever acted like a mother?"

"I don't have time for your nonsense."

"You're the one who's speaking nonsense!" Manik raised his voice, losing every bit of patience he had in him. "You're being illogical and impulsive and I will not agree to this."

"I'm not asking you to agree; I'm telling you my decision. Oh and, I'm the one who's being illogical and impulsive? What about you? Your decision to marry this girl; was that not illogical and impulsive?"

"Okay then, fine! I made a bad choice, but please don't do this," Manik had now started to plead. He hated pleading to his mother but now, he had to lose all his self-respect because he was truly helpless. "I don't have anywhere to go, Nyonika. Are you sure you want your son out on the streets?"

"I have no son," Nyonika repeated firmly as she got up to leave. Manik knew she had made her decision and at that moment, she seemed to be the most cruel person in the universe. For him, at least. "I'm leaving now," she said as she passed him while he stood there motionless, trying to let realization sink in. "When I come back in the evening, I want you and that piece of trash out of my house. If I don't, then I'll have the guards throw you out."

"Are you kidding me?" Navya almost shouted, gaining the attention of bystanders. It was then that Nandini shot her a quick glare and Navya sat back down on the bench beside her friend, composing herself. Once they had seemingly less attention, Navya slowly whispered, "Nandini, what the hell are you thinking? Are you seriously going to trust this guy after all that he did?"

"I just want to know the truth, Navya," Nandini sighed.

"But this is a huge risk!" Navya reminded her. "He's not trustworthy, Nandu."

"I don't trust him," Nandini denied, "I trust myself to find out the truth and that's all there is to it."

"Yeah, right," Navya scoffed. "You left the hostel to go with him, back to his house, where you will live for a very long time before he tells you the truth. You didn't even think about your safety and why is that? Because you trust him."

"I don't."

"Nandini, you do."

"I don't!" she denied yet again. "I mean... I can't... not after all that he's-"

"That's what I'm saying, Nandu," Navya explained. "You can't trust him."

"I don't trust him, Navya. I'll be fine; I have you."

"So you're telling me that if he tries to rape you, he'll allow you to call and inform me first?" Navya argued.

"Don't say that."

"It's a possibility."

"You don't know that," Nandini retorted. "I've been with him for three days and honestly, I don't think he's that kind of a guy."

"You don't get to know a person in three days, Nandini," Navya said before letting out a small sigh. "Look, I just want you to be safe so... promise me, that you'll be careful."

Seeing her friend's worry touched her heart. Nandini cared for Navya a lot and it make her very glad to see that she cared for her just as much, if not more. With a warm smile, she promised, "I will."

"I can't believe she did that," Cabir said in absolute shock.

"Well, believe it," Manik sighed, looking at his friend sitting beside him, "because here I am; homeless."

"But you can't be serious," Cabir exclaimed yet again. "She can't be serious."

"I thought the same at first, but then Nyonika proved me wrong and threw me out."

After a brief moment of silence, Cabir carefully asked, "So... where are you going to go now? With... Nandini and all..."

Manik sighed again. He knew Cabir was worried that he came here only to ask for shelter. Cabir was his best friend and he knew that he would let Manik stay at his house for as long as he wished. The problem, however, was Nandini. She didn't know the truth and neither did Cabir's parents. It wasn't like Manik could go anywhere without her, either. He was determined not to leave her alone.

"I have a plan," Manik started. "Remember the beach house we own? I used to go there once a month just to... escape the prison that is my home. Nandini and I can sneak inside and stay there, at least till I figure something out. We don't have any servants or guards there as it's pretty much, well, abandoned. That's good because Nyonika won't find out then but... I don't know how we'll make do."

"What do you mean? It's a good plan."

"I'm talking about the basic necessities; cooking, cleaning, and all that stuff. I can heat up frozen food and make coffee but we can't live on that forever."

"You won't be there for forever," Cabir assured him. "Let me help, okay? I'll look for households which are taking in tenants while you guys stay there for some time. I'll inform you when I find a suitable one."

"Are you sure about this?" Manik asked his friend once again.

"Absolutely," Cabir smiled at him. "I mean, it's the least I can do."

"Thanks Cabir," Manik said while getting up. "I'll be off then."

"Manik?" Cabir called him when he was halfway through the door and he turned, but Cabir didn't look up to him.

"Yeah?"

"Sorry."

Manik simply smiled as he said, "I know, its okay."

"Nandini?" Dhruv's voice caused her to turn around and as she saw him jog up to her, she merely smiled. "Thank God you're fine. I was starting to get worried."

"Hi, Dhruv," Nandini smiled and Dhruv almost fell for her yet again.

"Hey, are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Dhruv, what would happen to me?"

"You weren't at college for, like, three days and that's so unlike you," Dhruv observed. "Are you sure you're fine? Is everything okay at home?"

Nandini gulped as she lied once again, "Yes, Dhruv, everything is fine."

"That's good," Dhruv let out a sigh of relief. "After you... um, I was waiting for you... that day, you know."

"That day?" Nandini tried to recall the last time she met Dhruv. It was exactly then that she finally remembered about their date which never happened, and her eyes widened in shock. "Oh my God, Dhruv! I am so, so, so sorry! I'm just really, really sorry. I completely forgot! I just had so much going on tha-"

"Hey, hey, Nandini, relax," Dhruv said, trying to calm her down. "Relax its fine. Not a big deal." Deep down, he knew it was a big deal; a very big deal, at least for him.

"No Dhruv, I'm sorry. I feel so awful."

"Don't feel that way, Nandini. It was just a date."

"But you were looking forward to it and I disappointed you," Nandini said, the guilt almost eating her up. "I hate disappointing people and specially you."

"Nandini..."

"No, I'll make this up to you," she decided. "Are you free today? Maybe we can go out to see a movie or something."

"Nandini, you don't have to do this," Dhruv tried to convince her.

"No, Dhruv, I want to," she said instead. "I would really like to go out with you today so, what do you say?"

Nandini knew that she shouldn't lie but she just hated breaking Dhruv's heart. He was a very nice guy and she felt terrible about what she did, although her reasons were completely valid.

"I say yes," Dhruv grinned, and at that moment, Nandini knew her lie was worth seeing his face light up. However, she was forgetting a very important factor as she made that promise. A factor, or more like, a person, who would be changing everything for her and her date.

Manik.
