Part V - A New Friend
It had been a week since the initial meetings. Pragya was being picked up that afternoon by Damian. He'd come from Hong Kong, to research the changes to Indian culture in modern times. Till he finished his research, he would stay in India, travelling around the country.
His father who had come back to India after almost 40 years, was determined to get his thirty year old son married. He had met his wife, an English yoga teacher, when he had come back on holiday from his new job. She'd come to India to learn from the yogis and they had fallen in love.
At the time, their marriage was frowned upon, interracial marriages in India just didn't happen, but love prevailed. Now, he wanted his son to find the same love that he'd found in the country he still called home. Pragya had actually enjoyed talking to Damian and his parents when they had come to see her the first time.
It was easy to talk to someone who came from a similar professional background and keeping that in mind Damian took her to the museum. They admired the art and read all about the historical sculptures. His real passion came across when walking through the textile gallery where there were whole collections of traditional and regional costumes. She was surprised at the vast knowledge Damian actually had of the Indian culture.
She had always loved coming to the museum, so her first date with him felt special. Afterwards, he'd taken her to a coffee shop nearby, where they looked out towards the ocean. They arranged for a second date for three days later.
Dadi watched her bahu walk back inside smiling. She wondered if their plan would blow up on their faces. Calling Indu aside she whispered, "Indu, Pragya looks really happy. What are we going to do now? If she likes Damian, my bahu will be all the way in Hong Kong. Do something!"
"Don't worry didi, wait and watch." Indu daasi whispered back and walked away to find the one person who would unknowingly get their plan back on track.

She had been out with the remain two potential suitors in the past two days and had come home looking happier than he could ever imagine. Circumstances where such that when they had come to meet her and then pick her up for their first dates, respectively, he had been away and he was yet to meet the men who had so successfully put a smile on Chashmish's face.
Tonight, however he was crashing her date. Well, not exactly. He had called Damian and asked if Tanu and he could join them and Damian had politely agreed. To make things easier, he asked Abhi to meet him at the restaurant where he would change the booking to four people.
Abhi was dressed and walking out the door when Pragya walked down the stairs. She'd heard him telling Indu daasi that he was taking Tanu out to dinner. It had dampened her happiness slightly. She was okay going along with these games when she knew he was busy with work. But him meeting Tanu made the reality more...real; that they were going separate ways.
Damian was right on time in picking her up. But she was distracted with thoughts of where Abhi had gone with Tanu so the car ride quiet. Damian didn't seem inclined to interrupt her thoughts till he pulled up in front of the restaurant. He opened her door and spoke for the first time since they left the house,
"Pragya, you'll need to get out so he can park the car." Damian indicated to the valet waiting to park the car.
"Sorry." She got out and Damian shut the door before escorting her inside. She went back to thinking and missed the conversation that Damian had with the maitre'd so when they were ushered to a table with four seats, she was surprised.
"Damian, Are you sure they've given us the right table? There's four seats. We won't be needing the extra chairs. There are tables for two."
"Relax Pragya. I'm expecting another couple to join us. I hope you don't mind. You know them so it shouldn't be awkward." He pulled the seat out for her and once she was seated he sat down beside her. They made small chat till Damian saw the couple walk in.
"There they are. I thought they'd have been here before us." Pragya looked up to see Abhi and Tanu walking towards them.
Abhi pulled out the chair opposite Damian for Tanu to sit and then settled down opposite her with a "Hey, Chashmish! Surprise!"
"Damian, meet Tanu my date for the night. She's a model. Tanu, this is Damian, Pragya's date."
As Damian exchanged pleasantries with Tanu, Pragya hissed at Abhi, "Abhishek! What are you doing here? I'm on a date."
"As am I. So I thought why not come on a date together. I can get to know Damian better as well. Make sure he's right for you."
Drinks and Entres were ordered, and they all got to know each other better. Damian considered himself a conversationalist, at the same time however, he also enjoyed watching people talk. It was his belief that body language sent out signals that sometimes contrasted with the words that a person spoke.
"So Damian, Abhi tells me you're from Hong Kong?" Tanu drew him into a conversation.
"Yes. My parents moved there after they got married. Dad was doing his work experience and mum wanted to spread her yoga love."
"Wow. And how was living in Hong Kong?"
"It is amazing. The lifestyle is so freeing. Food is amazing, people are friendly. It is home for me. So what made you decide on modelling Tanu?" Damian asked Tanu, looking sideways at Pragya to make sure she was okay. He saw that she was looking at her plate. Glancing across the table, he saw that Abhi had mirrored Pragya's moves.
"I love fashion. I've wanted to be a model since I was young. I loved dressing up so this is perfect. Hong Kong is the upcoming fashion capital of Asia isn't it?"
"Yes it is. You should come to Hong Kong when I go back. You'd love it. I'll take you around. And you're more than welcome to stay with us."

Chashmish, how have your dates been going?" Abhi asked her finally.
She had been looking down at the plate in front of her. She was glad he was here, but confused at the same time. Why was he here? She voiced her thoughts when he spoke to her.
"They've been going well. Why are you here?"
"I wanted to take Tanu out and I wanted to know your dates better, so I thought I'd call Damian and ask him if we could join you. He didn't mind, so here we are."
"But what kind of a date is this? Your girlfriend is talking to my date and I'm talking to you. We're getting a divorce. How is that helping me?"
"Relax Chashmish. You'll have time. I haven't spoken to you properly since we decided to get a divorce so this is a good opportunity. Besides Damian is enjoying talking to Tanu about Hong Kong."
She fell silent as Abhi drew Damian and Tanu into conversation as well. And listened.
The Conversation was a good judge of human nature, but sometimes the unsaid words made all the difference. And that was what he did that night. He spoke to Abhishek and Tanu and he watched Pragya. She had gone quiet and was happy to sit back and listen as the conversation flowed.
The exchange almost felt like an experiment for him to confirm the feelings she had for him...or lack of. What he observed came as no surprise. She watched Abhi when he wasn't looking, with plain adoration in her eyes.
The dynamics of the trio was interesting. Abhi was oblivious to Pragya's feelings for him, but was still concerned for her. Damian noticed that he cut off the almost biting remark from Tanu when she spoke to Pragya, and gave her a warning glance.Tanu although Abhi's girlfriend, wasn't too concerned about Abhi. Pragya, on the other hand, was strangely territorial over him.
Dinner was completed, desserts shared and the table cleared. Abhi insisted on paying the bill, after all he had crashed their date but they split it up. Walking out together, he suggested that he take Pragya home and Damian drop Tanu. Damian wanted to talk to Pragya so he refuted and instead jokingly told Abhi, " You take your date home and I'll take mine. I'm sure you want to spend some alone time with Tanu. I know I want Pragya all to myself."
Once in the car Damian decided he needed to affirm whether she still had feelings for her husband.
"That was nice dinner. Abhi and Tanu make a very good couple don't they?"
"Yes."
"Abhi is getting married to her soon isn't it?"
"Yes."
"Are you going to help them organise it?"
"Yes."
He noticed that she was getting more subdued with her responses and almost as though she was replying automatically, without thinking, slipping in the question would be easy.
"You're going to miss him isn't it?"
"Yes."
"And you still love him?"
"Yes."
Damian braked and stopped the car. Pragya looked at him in surprise wondering why he'd stopped. "Do you know what you just said Pragya?" He asked her gently.
"Ummm..."
"I asked you if you still loved Abhi and you said you did."
"Sorry I wasn't paying attention. Of Course I don't..." Pragya trailed off.
"Pragya, if I ask you something will you give me an honest answer?"
"Yes. Yes I will."
"Don't get me wrong. It is none of my business and Tanu is a very nice person, but she doesn't care for Abhi. What I saw today is making me wonder why if you still love Abhi, you doing this? Why are you meeting other men? Why are you letting him get married to someone else?"
"I don't know about nice person, because she has never been nice to me, but that is probably because I'm married to her boyfriend. I'm doing this because he loves Tanu. Not me. He wants to marry her. And the only way he can do that is if I get married. His Dadi, whom he loves more than anything wants me settled first. I want him happy. His happiness lies with Tanu."
"He cares for you Pragya. And I think he might even love you. But to know for sure you need to fight for him. Tell him your feelings. If you want I can help."
Holding her hand he continued, "Pragya, I already consider you my friend, and as someone who cares I really want you to try. Give me a call if you need someone to talk to."
"Thanks Damian. I hope your search for your Indian bride goes well and that you find true love. I might just call you up for a coffee. Please don't tell anyone though."
"Don't worry Pragya. Good night."
She walked in still thinking about what he'd said. That was the third man whom she wouldn't marry even though she had quite liked him.
"How was your romantic drive. Did he kiss you good night?" a voice teased from behind.
"No, he didn't kiss me good night. We... talked. And decided that this would be the end." she replied as she turned to face him. "And anyways, the first kiss is always for someone special and he wasn't the one."
"Careful Chashmish. Sound like you've already found that special someone. Should I tell Dadi we need to stop looking?"
"No.Yes...I mean no, we don't need to stop looking. There isn't someone..." she glanced down breaking their gaze. She knew she wouldn't be able to lie at that moment and she tried to quash down the desire to tell him the truth.
Abhi kept his voice light as he spoke to her, but hearing her thoughts about first kisses brought back memories of an inebriated Chashmish asking him about kissing and how she'd never kissed anyone. At the time he'd told her that he wouldn't kiss her, but recently the idea held a strange appeal.
Without pushing further, he wished her goodnight and walked away as quickly as he could before he acted on his thoughts.
