Hello all you lovely people!!

I've been working on something for over a month now and it's finally almost done. The concept has been used in a couple of other fics so any co-incidence is unintentional. The task felt mammoth as there has been a lot of research involved in this piece because I wanted it to be as authentic as possible so most places that are mentioned do actually exist.

Selfishly this piece is mainly dedicated to Mina Di. She's been an immense motivator for all my writing. Helped me through the uncertainties and encouraged me to push the boundaries of my writing. All the talk through's, grammar and spell checks and all the encouraging. Thank you. It has been really hard not getting feedback on so many things, so I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Also a big thank you for the Banner that you've made! Because you know I'm not good at it. (Look at my almost SRK worthy speech.)

And a dedication to all the readers on the forum . Please do enjoy, like and leave your feedback.

I will try and update daily or every other day.😊

Part I - The News

He didn't know if he should be worried. He had broken the news of his impending divorce with Pragya to Dadi. Not only that, he told her everything that had transpired from the arrangement of the wedding to date. She seemed to have taken it surprisingly well.

Initially she had been slightly shocked, but had recovered quickly. Maneuvering him outside her room, she called for Indu and Swarni daasi to join her in her room before promptly shutting the door on his face. They had been in there ever since.

He wondered if he should hang around incase something happened to Dadi, but then reasoned since both Daasis were with her, there really was no need to worry. Walking away, he mentally prepared a list of everything that needed to be done for his "real" wedding to whom he referred to as the love of his life. Tanu.

Family commitments prevented him from spending much time with her and the lack of attention made her more demanding. She had been on his case for months about getting rid of the behenji and getting married to her. It hadn't started out that way he mused. She had wanted to concentrate on her career and he didn't want the commitment.

But it had happened with Aliyah's and to a lesser extent Dadi's insistence. Life played the biggest joke on him, making the girl Aliyah hated, the one Dadi loved. The same person he was currently married to. He had tried but hadn't been able to dislike her as much as Aliyah but she was different and that made him not like her much either. Until recently.

When she had frankly told him that he was under a misunderstanding, he felt foolish. He had blindly trusted everything his darling sister had told him without finding out the truth. His one uninformed decision had created a mess of his life. And hers.

But they had continued the pretence under the compromise that their elders were happy.

His sister had a different idea completely however, and decided to raise questions on her morality. The MMS that he's received had caused anger and grief that she had knowingly jeopardized the illusion that they had put up before their families.

He felt guilt when he remembered how rashly he had decided to get her married to her friend who had innocently been helping her. And the regret that washed over him when the truth finally came to light.

He recognized that he had been unfair to her and himself from the start of the marriage. He had neither respected nor given her enough credence to keep her end of the bargain, despite her various pleas that he believe her.

It shamed him and pricked his conscience, that he had so little faith. So he righted the wrong for his peace of mind and the first step for that had been telling Dadi about the non existent relationship.

It had taken months but the mess was getting sorted slowly and all the mistakes and tangled relationships would be neat and tidy soon.

Everyone would be in their place and happy.

*** *** ***

Dadi was not having it. She knew how dumb her grandson could be. She had raised him after all and knew him better than even himself.

He wasn't stupid. If anything he was insightful when it came to worldly matters, but matters of the heart he purposely shied away from. She remembered telling Pragya that her grandson had a heart of gold, but it almost seemed like he was determined to make a liar out of her.

As thoughts swirled through her mind, she tried to find that one thought of clarity that would help her with the mammoth task ahead.

"Indu, Swarni, Abhishek has just told me that him and Pragya are getting divorced." She finally spoke to her cousins who were waiting patiently for her to tell them why she'd called them there.

"Didi but it's not even been that long since Abhi cleared the confusion on Pragya's innocence. Did he give you a reason for the divorce?"

"He did it again. Remember how he used to take responsibility for Aliyah's mistakes when they were younger and solve all her problems? Well he decided to punish Pragya for loving Purab by marrying her."

"Daljeet, but I thought that problem was sorted out. That's why him and Aliyah didn't get married."

"Yes, but because of what Aliyah did with the MMS, Abhi has taken the blame on himself and that even though he doesn't love her, he's still married to her."

"Didi, he's joking right? That he doesn't love Pragya is a lie. You just have to look at them to know that there is something there."

" Indu, he told me they have been acting and that..."

" Daljeet, they cannot be acting all the time. There is too much concern even when they can't see anyone around."

" I know Swarni. My grandson is being stubborn about his feelings. There has to be a way to make him realise what he truly feels for Pragya. Think, because if we don't interfere, he will regret it."

"Didi, why don't we make Pragya go back to her Maayka?"

"No. He wants her to leave so we cannot give that to him. Her leaving will not bring them closer or solve anything. We will have to let Sarla know of whatever we decide as it is and I don't want to stress her out even further by sending Pragya back home."

"She needs to stay close by...But what can we do?"

All three fell silent for a while. How to convince anyone that they loved someone was a tricky task. After all between the three of them they had enough experience to know that not everyone reacted the same in any situation.

"That's it Didi. She stays close but far!"

"Don't talk in riddles Indu. What are you trying to say?"

"Didi, first make sure Pragya is far from Abhi. Still visible but far. We can start with moving all her things to the room next to yours. Robin can do all the things that Pragya used to do for Abhi."

"But what will that achieve?"

"Pragya not doing all his work will make him realise how much she does for him. But there is more. Tell Abhi you are happy for him to get divorced and marry whom he wants, on one condition. He needs to ensure Pragya's happiness first."

"Pragya's happiness?"

"Swarni didi, I mean to say, we tell him he needs to make sure that Pragya will also be happily married to someone and have a life filled with all the happiness he wants in his life. He needs to find Pragya a groom."

"Indu, remember what happened during the fake MMS? He insisted the wedding to be completed in 4 days. What if he decides to do something like that again?"

"Swarni didi, Abhi didn't let her get married to Suresh. He found out the truth and stopped the wedding. But there is a solution to that. Abhi has to approve that the groom will keep Pragya happy. If nothing else the guilt of doing so much wrong in her life, will make him find the best possible match for her."

"I hope this plan works."

"Didi let's get the wheels rolling at least. If need be we can intervene. We keep an eye on what is happening."

"We can get Preeto in the plan as well. It is a strange request, but I've known her long enough. We just have to be careful to not hurt any of the other boys feelings."

*** *** ***

She wasn't sure what she was going to do with herself. Ever since he had told her that it would be for the best that they divorced, things had seemed hazy. She had thought that they had finally gotten accustomed to one another and things were going well.

Their relationship was settling in what she thought would be quite a familiar routine to other couples who had an arranged marriage. True, they didn't have a physical relationship of any sort, but she had accepted him as her husband and had started liking him. When that like became love she would never know.

And she had dared to hope that maybe there was a potential future of them being together when he stopped the wedding and burnt the divorce papers. That belief was quickly shattered with the information that Dadi now knew of their divorce.

To further break the thought of any normality entering her head, he told her he was going to be spending the rest of the day with Tanu planning their wedding. She didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the hand she had been dealt with.

After all the possessiveness over him she has shown to Tanu, Tanu was finally going to have it all; her husband, her family and her position. And she would be left with... nothing. Because no one ever wanted a divorced woman especially not someone like her who didn't have the looks, the young age or anything physically appealing to offer.

She never looked at herself as a commodity and placed great value on being her own person, but human nature put appearances over everything else. She had experience in that field, people overlooking her or showing preference to her better looking sister.

Worry came about because she was unsure of what exactly her future would hold. Of course no one would dare put any fault on the rockstar. They would look for the shortcomings in her. What she had lacked that her rockstar husband had to go looking elsewhere.

She'd just come a full circle in her thoughts she mused. Not wanting to think any more about her future, she got up to sort out the mess he had made in the room before leaving. After all regardless of what anyone thought of her, she did know how to keep house.

"Pragya!" she heard Dadi call her just as she was putting the last of his dogtags away.

"Coming Dadi." Walking towards Dadi's room she wondered how she would appease Dadi's disappointment in them not making the marriage work. "You called me Dadi?"

"Pragya, I want you to move all your belongings to the room next to mine. Do it now. Abhi has told me all about the divorce and I don't want anyone pointing a finger at you, my child."

"Dadi, it doesn't matter. There isn't anything between us so it shouldn't be a problem anyways. Plus, he'll find it hard to find everything in the room, because I've been putting things away for months now."

"He will just have to get unused to it. From now you're staying here as my daughter. So no doing anything for him. His new wife will take over the task, but till then, show Robin the essentials and he'll look after that. Abhi is a grown man and he can find his own things. Also there is no need to make his coffee in the morning. I'll do that and send it with Robin."

"But Dadi why would you be doing any work while I'm here?"

"Oh my sweet child, don't worry so. I'm going to show Robin how to make his coffee as well. It will take a few days but Robin will learn and then he'll take over that chore too."

"Dadi I really don't..."

"No my child, what my grandson has done is very unfair. I want you to spend as much time with me as possible, because I know once he gets married again we are not going to be able to keep you here. Now go and start packing your belongings. Make sure nothing gets left behind. I don't want to give Abhi any more excuses to get annoyed at you."

"Okay Dadi. I'll do as you say. Although you shouldn't really bother. Like you said it is only for a few days till he gets married."

Pragya was unsure how it would work, but she knew reasoning with dadi would be futile. If there was anything she had learnt during her stay at her in-laws, it was that everyone was fairly stubborn once they decided they wanted something.

Gathering all her belongings didn't take too long and in her own meticulous way arranged everything in her new room. Adjusting to a room without her husband's larger than life presence would take some time. She didn't realise how used to him she had gotten.

Calling out for Robin, she showed him where she's kept all Abhi's important things, with the instruction that if there was something he couldn't find, he was to come and ask her. She knew Dadi had instructed to leave Abhi to his own vices, however, Robin wasn't at fault and she did not want Abhi getting angry at him for no reason.

She had decided to get Abhi's bar put back into his room. He had been angry when she had taken over the space in his room for her mandir and books and thought giving that back to him was her way of making sure there was nothing there to remind him that she was ever a part of his life.

Part II - The Decision

That evening Abhi walked back into his bachelor room.
The first thing he noticed was that his bar was back. The small mandir and the various bookshelves filled with books were gone. His weights were also back as was his vast CD collection. He further found no trace of the various tubs that lined the table in front of the mirror.
Walking into his closet, he realised someone had been rearranging his clothes. Gone were the colourful monochrome chatris that had taken over his wardrobe. His clothes were neatly arranged by colour as well as his tags and various accessories. Not only that, all his formal wear had been arranged to one side so that it was easier for him to find everything.
The joy he felt seeing his things diminished slightly when he realised that there was nothing of Chashmish's in the room. Wondering what had happened to all her possessions, he wandered out of the room looking for her. He had just passed Dadi's room, when he heard her laughing. Backtracking slightly, he knocked on Dadi's door to find her sitting with Dadi and daasis with remnants of tea and snacks on the table.
"Pragya, your stuff from the room is gone. What happened to it?"
She didn't quite meet his eyes when she started replying "Well... Dadi thought it was best if I..."
"I told her to move all her things into the room next to mine. She's going to be staying there. Also, when you have some time there are a few things that I want to talk to you about."
"I'm free now Dadi."
"Okay then. Close the door."
Abhi complied and sat down next to Dadi wondering what she wanted to talk about.
"Abhi, I have made a decision. As my grandson I am hoping you will oblige and respect what I have to say, this one last time."
"Dadi you know I'll do anything for you. Just tell me what it is."
"Firstly, I know I made a big mistake forcing you to get married to Pragya. I have decided that once your divorce is finalised, you will get married to the girl you love. Who is she?"
"Dadi...it's Tanu. She was the girl I was going to introduce to you before but at the time things didn't quite work out. But for the past few months we've become more serious about our relationship."
"Oh Abhi. How I wish you had told me all this in the start. We would have sorted something out. Getting back to the point however, I have a condition for your re-marriage. You will have to make sure that Pragya is settled down first."
"What?"
"What?"
Abhi managed to speak first. "Settled down? What do you mean by that Dadi? How am I supposed to make sure that she's settled down first? I thought she was going back to her mother's house. In fact I had already decided that I would go and talk to Auntyji tomorrow."
"Yes Dadi, I'll move back home once the wedding is over. I was going to help you with that so you're not exerting yourself. I don't need to be settled down. I'll go back to my life before I met Abhishek."
"Enough. You've both done enough damage. Pragya when you got married to Abhi, you became my responsibility. I had told your mother that I would always make sure you were happy here. And I know you have been. But, you've also been sad. I want you to have a happy future ahead of you. And because Abhi has had a hand in playing with your present, he will make amends."
" Abhi, I want you to find Pragya a groom. But not just any groom, you have to make sure he'll be perfect for Pragya. Just like how I want you to be happy with Tanu, I want her to be happy with whomever she marries and that is now your responsibility."
"But Dadi who is going to marry a divorcee. It is harder for women to marry again. You know how society thinks. I've never mentioned it but I have had a few broken relations before and that was when I was single. I don't think anyone will be willing to marry me now."
"Chash...Pragya what are you saying? Of course someone will marry you."
"Yes Pragya. Don't worry we'll find a groom who is perfect for you. Abhi I have already asked Preeto to bring some eligible bachelors photographs and biodatas for you to look through. She is coming with them in a couple of days. And remember Pragya as well as Indu, Swarni and myself need to willingly approve of the boy you choose."
"Dadi, I still feel like this is going to be a waste of time. I don't need a husband."
"Pragya, you cannot spend the rest of your life alone. Life's journey is always more memorable when there is someone by your side. We should know. Life seems so long without that special loved one by your side. Family helps ease the pain, but it seems like someone is missing."
Pragya wished she could tell Indu daasi that she had already found that special someone in her current husband. Despite all their fights, she had found a steady rock in him, knowing that even with the lack of romantic feelings, he would always be there to help ease the burden. Willingly, or unwillingly.
Abhi had paid very little attention to what Dadi was saying once he heard that she wanted him to get Chashmish married. He had not really thought of what would happen to Chashmish once they divorced. He always assumed that she was going back to her mother's place. That was what had happened after the MMS scenario, so why would this have been any different?
So despite the strangeness of the request, he spoke up after Daasi's explanation to her.
"Okay Dadi. Whatever you say. I'll start looking through the biodatas for the potential suitors that Preeto Aunty brings."
Abhi paced as he continued, "It might be a good idea to set up an online profile for Pragya as well. Or maybe we can place an ad in the newspaper...No that sounds desperate."
Stopping in front of Pragya, "But, Chash...Pragya, we have never seen eye to eye so I don't know how we'll be able to decide on a groom that satisfies all our expectations."
"Don't worry about that. We'll find the perfect partner for Pragya. Now, go freshen up. We'll all go down to have dinner. Pragya will only be with us a few days and then she'll be gone to someone else's house and make someone else's Dadi happy." To avoid any further conversation Dadi got up and signalled Indu and Swarni to follow her downstairs.
Abhi walked back to the room lost in thought. He was happy that Dadi was thinking about Chashmish's future. He should have thought about it. After all it was mostly his fault that she was in this situation in the first place. He would find her the best groom possible.
His thoughts were interrupted by his phone ringing.
"Hey, Tanu!"
"Abhi, why did you go so quickly? I thought we'd have dinner together!"
"Baby, I told you. I've just told Dadi that Pragya and I are getting divorced. I wanted to be close by in case something happened to Dadi. You know how attached she is to Pragya right?"
"I know Abhi, but what about us?"
"Tanu, I have great news for you. You'll be glad I came home early."
"What happened? What news? Are we getting married?"
"Yes! I finally told Dadi that you're the girl I like. Dadi has agreed to our marriage once the divorce is finalised. There is ..."
"Oh my God Abhi! That is so exciting. Soon I'll be the one by your side. We'll be together forever."
"You didn't let me finish. There is one condition that Dadi has put forth. I need to make sure that Pragya is happily married first. I need to find her a groom."
"What? A groom? Why? Oh no Abhi this will take so long. And that behenji, she must have refused because I know she doesn't want to leave you. Now what are we going to do? We'll never be together."
"Calm down Tanu. Pragya has agreed to get married once everything is finalised. Dadi is the one who has put the condition that they need to approve of the groom."
"Abhi at this rate we'll never get married. You need to make sure that that behenji is married soon. My contract finishes in two months and I'm not renewing it because I want us to get married." Abhi winced at Tanu's high pitch as she continued "I'll get back to modelling after we're back from our honeymoon."
Trying to placate her, he promised that he'd make sure Chashmish was married within two months, so they could then get married.
It was going to be hectic. He had signed a new contract with his producers and the last thing he needed was the added responsibility of getting Chashmish married within Tanu's timeframe, but he would do it.
*** *** ***
Pragya was feeling sleep deprived. She had tossed and turned on the bed in the guest room and had finally fallen asleep in the early morning hours. Less than three hours later her alarm woke her up. Usually she adapted to different environments quickly and had never taken this long to adjust to a new room.
Deep down she knew it was the lack of his presence that made the adjustment harder. She had gotten so used to having him in the room that she found it impossible sleeping without him there. Giving herself a pep talk in the shower, she made up her mind that she would do enough to tire herself out to be able to get a good night sleep that night.
The house had just started stirring when she went downstairs to make breakfast. She knew that Dadi didn't want her to do any work but because habitually she awoke early, she wanted to make sure that everything was ready for breakfast. As per Dadi's instructions Robin had started making Abhishek's coffee but she couldn't help but hover till he finished.
Everyone wandered to the table as she finished her morning prayers. She hadn't put up her mandir in the room, knowing that she would have to take it down again. Instead she'd started doing her daily prayers in the mandir in the hall.
Dadi had called her over to sit by her side, as if almost strategically placing her across from Abhishek. It was difficult for her, being so close to him yet so far. But Dadi did not know how she felt about him so thinking that was ridiculous.
The first thing he noticed was how tired she looked, almost as though she hadn't slept, but that was impossible. She had a whole room to herself, the whole bed so there was no reason. But it still worried him.
He wasn't paying attention to anyone else seated around the table, or else he would have noticed that three people on the table were watching his every move.
All three dadis shared a knowing look. Dadi was the first to notice the almost smile that flitted across her grandson's face, as she called Pragya to sit next to her, before he frowned. He had obviously seen something that he didn't like. Glancing at Pragya she saw the reason. Her bahu looked tired. Exhausted almost as though she had been up the whole night.
Swarni had also noticed Abhi's look as she was seated next to Pragya. As had Indu Daasi who was next to Abhi. She noticed something else as well. Pragya's face had turned a slight shade of pink as she looked across from the table, and her body relaxed.
"Abhi, have you had a chance to look at those biodatas that Preeto had brought over yesterday?"
"No dadi, I've been so busy with my recording that I haven't had a chance. I'm free after lunch so I'll take a look then. I didn't put up an online profile. I thought it best if we keep this low key."
"Okay, do it any way you want. But hurry up. Look at how much my Pragya has wilted. She needs someone to bring the happiness back into her life."

Part III - The Search

He didn't know what to do. The pile had seemed daunting and an hour later he wasn't any closer to narrowing it down even slightly.

He couldn't believe some of the photos he was looking at. All the potential suitors looked like models and that was before he even saw their full biodatas. Deciding to ignore the photographs, he started looking through the actual profiles when Tanu walked into the room.

Aliyah was back in Australia and although it broke his heart, he had to make her go, to get over the obsession she had developed. That hadn't prevented Tanu from coming over to meet him, but it had reduced drastically.

Now though, because dadi knew of their relationship, she walked into his room without any fear of reprimand.

"Abhi, what are you doing? Come on. Let's go for a drive. We can have dinner after."

"Tanu I'm looking for Pragya's groom. Dadi's sent these photos and biodatas but I can't seem to decide who to choose. Am I a girl?"

"Oh stop it Abhi. It's not that hard to pick a guy for Pragya. After all that [/i]behenji[/i] doesn't need someone very good looking or rich."

"No Tanu. Dadi, Indu and Swarni Daasi and Pragya all have to approve. Why don't you help? Pick some that you'd think appropriate and I'll show them to Dadi. It will get done quicker that way and we can go where ever you want."

Tanu had already started flicking through the pile of biodatas that Abhi had rejected to see what options the behenji had gotten. They were all very attractive and soon she was absorbed in looking through.

Absently she murmured, "OH he's quite good looking. Loves travelling...hmmm or this one...wow he's quite handsome as well... average job..."

Abhi was getting annoyed. And frustrated. Here he was trying to find someone who would be able to meet Chashmish on an intellectual level and Tanu was going for the looks. They weren't any closer to finding the perfect match for Pragya from when he'd started.

Pushing them aside he started, "Why is this so hard? I've only looked at about fifteen that she might like and that dadi and both daasis will approve of, but even those I'm only half sure off."

Tanu added hers onto the pile that Abhi had formed.

"Abhi just go give them to dadi. She can narrow it down further. Just tell her that you liked these and now they need to decide. Let's go out."

Rubbing a hand across his face, he picked up the pile and walked to dadi's room.

"Dadi, here you go. I liked these profiles the best. Why don't you, Indu daasi and Swarni daasi take a look and narrow it down. I'll call them up and ask them to come meet Pragya and she can decide whom she likes. For now I'm going out. Call me if you need anything."

"Okay Abhi. Keep your phone handy. I'll call you to let you know. Please send Indu and Swarni to the room before you leave."

*** *** ***

"Didi, Abhi told us he's given you some suitors biodatas. Have you looked? How are they? We need to make sure that they are good enough to give Abhi some competition."

"Patience Indu. I was waiting for both of you. Here they are. I told Preeto to make sure that all the suitors were physically attractive and had stable high incomes. She did mention she had put some middle class boys as well so as not to raise any suspicion."

"Hurry didi. Let's take a look. I can't wait."

All three dadis looked through with a keen eye to see whom Abhi though was most suitable for Pragya. There were some surprising choices that they didn't expect. They discussed, dissected and discarded seventy five percent of the profiles, leaving them with five potential suitors. They knew they wouldn't need so many, but they hoped that Pragya would like at least one of them enough for them to carry out the rest of their plan.

"Didi, now all we need is for Pragya to meet them. We need to make sure Abhi is present for all the meetings so he can see them interacting. Remember close but far."

"But Indu, what if Pragya really does like one of them?"

"Didi, I don't think so. Today at breakfast you were all watching Abhi but I was looking at Pragya. She looked so listless till she sat down and then she saw Abhi and her whole face just looked so at peace. And she was blushing. I don't think we have to worry."

"Okay that's good. I'm going to give Abhi the numbers of these boys to call them. We can start from tomorrow itself."

"Daljeet, should we tell Pragya?"

"Let's wait till the Abhi calls them, then we'll let her know."

*** *** ***

He sat down with the numbers of the five men that Dadi had approved. Now he just had to figure out what he would say when he called them up. Drafts had been crumpled and thrown till he had what he thought was the best and neutral invitation to the prospective suitors.

It was simple explaining to them to come meet Pragya and see if they clicked. He didn't tell them about the unusual situation of her still being married to him. He figured that was something that he would leave up to dadi to explain.

To make sure that there was enough time for each person to meet with Pragya for the first time, they would arrive one after the other from that evening spanning over the next two days. He told dadi of the arrangement and was informed of needing to be present for all the initial meetings.

Pragya couldn't believe she was doing it. Meeting new men to get married. Again. She was setting herself up for disappointment. Dadi had told her to get ready and be downstairs once she was called. She had put on one of her dressier anarkalis to meet the first of the suitors, who was due any minute. And she paced.

She had gotten more restless since being told of the meetings. She wanted to shout and be stubborn about not wanting to go through with this, but she was mature. Respectful. And patient. The wait was soon over and dadi called her downstairs to meet the first person.

As she walked down the staircase, she saw him sitting across from dadi. He looked okay, quite good looking in fact. Clean shaven bar the moustache. Wearing a t shirt and jeans, he looked as though he worked out every day, for hours. Good features.

"And here is Pragya. She's a professor. She took a year out to settle in and be a wife, but with the current situation that we spoke about earlier, she might either take more time or go back to work."

"Pragya, meet Anant Sood."

Pragya smiled and folded her hands towards him.

"Hi. Anant. Nice to meet you Pragya."

"So Anant where is your family? Did they not want to come? Usually getting married is a big decision and parents especially want to know." Indu daasi started off the conversation.

"Well, my parents are in Punjab. Dad works in a firm. Mum looks after my grandparents. They couldn't come on such short notice. In fact I think it's better that they're not here."

"Why though? Surely family is very important in decisions of life aren't they?" Dadi asked.

"Yes sure. But I have to live with my wife. I'm not going to be staying with my family after my marriage. Because of my career choice, we don't see eye to eye with lifestyle choices. I am hoping that Pragya will adapt to those lifestyles."

Pragya sat in wonderment. How could someone not want to stay with their family? Understandably his family was far away, but to not wanting to be with them? And what lifestyles was he talking about? Finally speaking up over her family she asked him to clarify, "What exactly is your lifestyle?"

"Pragya, I'm going to be frank with you. As a fitness instructor, I have a very healthy alternative lifestyle. I spend long hours on keeping myself fit, inspiring other people to take care of themselves, healthy food, that sort of thing. I'm hoping you can adjust to that."

"So family is not on your list of priorities?"

"Well, not exactly. My family is happy where they are and I don't want to have any of the family dramas that most people have with their in laws. I believe if I keep my wife separate from my parents, there will never be that strain."

Pragya was beginning to like him less and less. How could anyone live without a family, the joys and sorrows that came with them? She had always lived with family around her be it at her maternal house, or here at her husband's. To have a relation void of all other relations felt empty.

"I'll have to think about it and let you know. Thank you for taking time out of your day to come and see me. If you'll excuse me, I would like to talk to Dadi privately."

"Yes. Give me a call. We should spend more time talking to each other. I need to leave. I have a client coming in to see me soon."

*** *** ***

"Dadi, I can't meet him again. It would kill me to live alone with just my husband. I have always had people surrounding me. Family is the essence of any relationship. I agree having privacy is important but to not want family around you because there might be some bickering between mother in law and daughter in law is just unreasonable. Please Dadi I can't do it."

"Don't worry my child. I'll get Abhi to call him and refuse for any further meetings. I told you before and I'm reassuring you again you won't get married to anyone you don't want to. The choice is entirely yours."

Abhi called suitor number one and told him that Pragya didn't want to meet him again. After disconnecting the call he tried figuring out why Dadi had picked a guy like that for Pragya.

He hadn't liked the look of him and was sure he'd put his profile in the no pile. And deep down he was glad that Pragya hadn't liked him either. Remembering Tanu had come over and had started looking through the pile, he wondered how many of the suitors he called were the ones he'd actually chosen.

Part IV - Dating Games

She had met all the other guys. And she'd liked all of them. And now they were going on dates. Dates. Really? He was not given the option of going on a date with her. How was it possible that now four random men were going on a date with his wife? And Dadi was completely fine with it.

Tonight it was the Accountant. Reyansh Malhotra. He remembered the profile vaguely. He'd studied here in Mumbai, finished his professional studies. He worked at a good firm at a fairly high managerial accounting post at a young age. Was from a good nuclear family. And seemed nice during the first meeting. So there was nothing wrong with him at all. It was better, after all if she liked him, then that would be it, she could get married to him once everything was finalized.

So why was it bothering him that she had dressed up slightly to meet him? It wasn't one of her normal monochrome chatris, those he could have dealt with. Instead there was a modern border to the chatri. She had draped her dupatta differently as well.

Dadi almost banged into Abhi. He had been pacing near the staircase, lost in his thoughts and hadn't noticed her.

"Abhi! What are you doing? Do you want me to fall?"

"Sorry Dadi. I didn't realise. I was just thinking. About dating."

"Why are you thinking about dating all of a sudden?"

"It's just Dadi, there was never an opportunity for me to take her on a date you know."

"Oh I see. I'm sure you've taken Tanu out on many dates before your marriage to Pragya, but I didn't know about it. So what do you mean opportunity? You want to go on a date with Tanu? Then why don't you? Take her out to dinner. Make sure it is a nice place. And Abhi; enjoy." Saying that dadi walked away with a smile on her face fully knowing that it had been Pragya that he had been talking about.

*** *** ***

Pragya didn't know where they were going. She'd worn another of her anarkalis hoping that it was appropriate for where they were going for dinner. He was dressed surprisingly well when he came to pick her up. A buttoned shirt and casual pants with loafers and a blazer.

He'd splurged taking her to a restaurant that was quiet and quite expensive. As they sat down and were handed the menus, Reyansh spoke up,

"My boss recommended this place. It is quite nice. I hope the food is good as well."

Pragya smiled and replied, "Yes, it looks nice. I hope the food is good. Although we didn't need to come to somewhere so expensive."

"I know. But impressions count. Let's take a look at the menus and order dinner."

Once they had placed their orders. They talked about books that they had both read and writing techniques of various writers, but by the time their main course arrived to their table, conversation had tapered to a silence.

Pragya realised that although they did like reading and families were a priority, they had nothing to talk about. The quiet was awkward and apart from their cutlery moving on their dishes, there was no other sound.

She couldn't wait to leave. Her thoughts flitted to the dinner that Dadi had sent Abhi and her on. There was stark contrast in both outings. Even though Abhi had not liked her at all at the time, there was banter in their conversation and the silence was comfortable.

Meals were cleared soon and plans altered. He was apologetic when he requested to drop Pragya home earlier than planned. On reaching the gates, just before she got out of the car, he spoke,

"I'm sorry Pragya. This has been awful."

"It has been hasn't it?" she said laughingly and then continued, "Please don't be sorry. It is hard when there isn't much to talk about. At least now we both know what we don't want. You'll find someone eventually. Thank you for the wonderful dinner though."

"I hope you find someone too. Good night and good luck"

Pragya walked in to find the hall deserted. Dinner time was long over and the family usually never sat together so it wasn't surprising, but to have the rest of the house so quiet was strange.

When she asked Robin, he told her that Mitali bhabhi had taken the kids to visit her maternal house and all three Dadis had retired to their rooms for the night.

Tayaji and Tayiji were attending a friend's 65th birthday and Aakash was also out with some potential sponsors. Lastly, she was informed that Abhi had been locked up in his home studio and hadn't had dinner as yet. Asking Robin to bring a tray of dinner to the studio, she made her way towards it.

She knocked and opened the door to walk in. He was sitting with his guitar lost in thought. Taking a deep breath she spoke to him for the first time since their conversation in Dadi's room,

"Hi."

"Hey Pragya. What are you doing here? I thought you'd not be back till much later."

"We finished early. It was...strange. We just..." Robin knocked on the door interrupting the conversation.

"Place it here Robin and go sleep. I'll clear up so don't worry."

"Okay Bhabhi."

"Robin told me you hadn't eaten, so I thought it might be best if he brought it here. I disturbed you. Sorry. I'll leave. Make sure you eat." Turning around, she walked towards the door realising that she didn't quite know why she sought him out after her date.

"Stay." he requested softly, placing the guitar on the stand.

"But you're working."

"No. I was trying to work. But I've been here a while and it isn't happening."

"You're probably tired from being cooped up in here the whole day. Eat and go to sleep. You'll wake up refreshed."

"You didn't finish telling me why you're home early." He replied taking a morsel of food.

"Ummm...it was...awkward."

"Awkward?"

The food lay forgotten as she started speaking and the silence lifted.

"I thought we had a few things in common and we would get to know each other, but we spoke about similar authors and that was it. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my whole life. The silence. I didn't know what to say. We ate and he dropped me home. We decided it wouldn't work out. Abhishek, why is this so hard?"

"Chashmish, it will get easier. When it is the right person, talking about the smallest things will take long. And when there is silence, it will still be comfortable. You just need to find the right person. That is why we're doing this. Don't worry. I'll keep looking till we find the one for you."

"Thank you Abhishek. I hope we find him soon too. So you can marry Tanu." she replied, trying to smile.

They went silent and he started eating again. There was so much she wanted to ask him. Tell him.

But what if you're the one? What if I want to share the smallest things with you?Why wasn't it possible to just stay with you? Even silence with you feels like home. She had told him how the date went with Reyansh, but what she couldn't say was how she had compared everything that had happened with time she had spent with him.

"I'm done. Let's go. I'll finish up tomorrow."

"You go on up. I'll just put all this in the kitchen and come upstairs."

"Let me help you." Saying so, Abhi walked with Pragya to the kitchen. Putting the tray and unused cutlery on the counter, he leaned against it and watched the ease with which she did everything in the kitchen.

Her movements were efficient, but fluid. It made him wonder if Tanu would ever look that good in the kitchen. Usually if they shared a meal it was out at dinner or she got the help to make the food. She'd never actually cooked anything and doubted she even knew how.

Part V - A New Friend

It had been a week since the initial meetings. Pragya was being picked up that afternoon by Damian. He'd come from Hong Kong, to research the changes to Indian culture in modern times. Till he finished his research, he would stay in India, travelling around the country.
His father who had come back to India after almost 40 years, was determined to get his thirty year old son married. He had met his wife, an English yoga teacher, when he had come back on holiday from his new job. She'd come to India to learn from the yogis and they had fallen in love.
At the time, their marriage was frowned upon, interracial marriages in India just didn't happen, but love prevailed. Now, he wanted his son to find the same love that he'd found in the country he still called home. Pragya had actually enjoyed talking to Damian and his parents when they had come to see her the first time.
It was easy to talk to someone who came from a similar professional background and keeping that in mind Damian took her to the museum. They admired the art and read all about the historical sculptures. His real passion came across when walking through the textile gallery where there were whole collections of traditional and regional costumes. She was surprised at the vast knowledge Damian actually had of the Indian culture.
She had always loved coming to the museum, so her first date with him felt special. Afterwards, he'd taken her to a coffee shop nearby, where they looked out towards the ocean. They arranged for a second date for three days later.
Dadi watched her bahu walk back inside smiling. She wondered if their plan would blow up on their faces. Calling Indu aside she whispered, "Indu, Pragya looks really happy. What are we going to do now? If she likes Damian, my bahu will be all the way in Hong Kong. Do something!"
"Don't worry didi, wait and watch." Indu daasi whispered back and walked away to find the one person who would unknowingly get their plan back on track.
*** *** ***
She had been out with the remain two potential suitors in the past two days and had come home looking happier than he could ever imagine. Circumstances where such that when they had come to meet her and then pick her up for their first dates, respectively, he had been away and he was yet to meet the men who had so successfully put a smile on Chashmish's face.
Tonight, however he was crashing her date. Well, not exactly. He had called Damian and asked if Tanu and he could join them and Damian had politely agreed. To make things easier, he asked Abhi to meet him at the restaurant where he would change the booking to four people.
Abhi was dressed and walking out the door when Pragya walked down the stairs. She'd heard him telling Indu daasi that he was taking Tanu out to dinner. It had dampened her happiness slightly. She was okay going along with these games when she knew he was busy with work. But him meeting Tanu made the reality more...real; that they were going separate ways.
Damian was right on time in picking her up. But she was distracted with thoughts of where Abhi had gone with Tanu so the car ride quiet. Damian didn't seem inclined to interrupt her thoughts till he pulled up in front of the restaurant. He opened her door and spoke for the first time since they left the house,

"Pragya, you'll need to get out so he can park the car." Damian indicated to the valet waiting to park the car.
"Sorry." She got out and Damian shut the door before escorting her inside. She went back to thinking and missed the conversation that Damian had with the maitre'd so when they were ushered to a table with four seats, she was surprised.
"Damian, Are you sure they've given us the right table? There's four seats. We won't be needing the extra chairs. There are tables for two."
"Relax Pragya. I'm expecting another couple to join us. I hope you don't mind. You know them so it shouldn't be awkward." He pulled the seat out for her and once she was seated he sat down beside her. They made small chat till Damian saw the couple walk in.
"There they are. I thought they'd have been here before us." Pragya looked up to see Abhi and Tanu walking towards them.
Abhi pulled out the chair opposite Damian for Tanu to sit and then settled down opposite her with a "Hey, Chashmish! Surprise!"
"Damian, meet Tanu my date for the night. She's a model. Tanu, this is Damian, Pragya's date."
As Damian exchanged pleasantries with Tanu, Pragya hissed at Abhi, "Abhishek! What are you doing here? I'm on a date."
"As am I. So I thought why not come on a date together. I can get to know Damian better as well. Make sure he's right for you."
Drinks and Entres were ordered, and they all got to know each other better. Damian considered himself a conversationalist, at the same time however, he also enjoyed watching people talk. It was his belief that body language sent out signals that sometimes contrasted with the words that a person spoke.
"So Damian, Abhi tells me you're from Hong Kong?" Tanu drew him into a conversation.
"Yes. My parents moved there after they got married. Dad was doing his work experience and mum wanted to spread her yoga love."
"Wow. And how was living in Hong Kong?"
"It is amazing. The lifestyle is so freeing. Food is amazing, people are friendly. It is home for me. So what made you decide on modelling Tanu?" Damian asked Tanu, looking sideways at Pragya to make sure she was okay. He saw that she was looking at her plate. Glancing across the table, he saw that Abhi had mirrored Pragya's moves.
"I love fashion. I've wanted to be a model since I was young. I loved dressing up so this is perfect. Hong Kong is the upcoming fashion capital of Asia isn't it?"
"Yes it is. You should come to Hong Kong when I go back. You'd love it. I'll take you around. And you're more than welcome to stay with us."
*** ***

Chashmish, how have your dates been going?" Abhi asked her finally.
She had been looking down at the plate in front of her. She was glad he was here, but confused at the same time. Why was he here? She voiced her thoughts when he spoke to her.
"They've been going well. Why are you here?"
"I wanted to take Tanu out and I wanted to know your dates better, so I thought I'd call Damian and ask him if we could join you. He didn't mind, so here we are."
"But what kind of a date is this? Your girlfriend is talking to my date and I'm talking to you. We're getting a divorce. How is that helping me?"
"Relax Chashmish. You'll have time. I haven't spoken to you properly since we decided to get a divorce so this is a good opportunity. Besides Damian is enjoying talking to Tanu about Hong Kong."

She fell silent as Abhi drew Damian and Tanu into conversation as well. And listened.
The Conversation was a good judge of human nature, but sometimes the unsaid words made all the difference. And that was what he did that night. He spoke to Abhishek and Tanu and he watched Pragya. She had gone quiet and was happy to sit back and listen as the conversation flowed.
The exchange almost felt like an experiment for him to confirm the feelings she had for him...or lack of. What he observed came as no surprise. She watched Abhi when he wasn't looking, with plain adoration in her eyes.
The dynamics of the trio was interesting. Abhi was oblivious to Pragya's feelings for him, but was still concerned for her. Damian noticed that he cut off the almost biting remark from Tanu when she spoke to Pragya, and gave her a warning glance.Tanu although Abhi's girlfriend, wasn't too concerned about Abhi. Pragya, on the other hand, was strangely territorial over him.
Dinner was completed, desserts shared and the table cleared. Abhi insisted on paying the bill, after all he had crashed their date but they split it up. Walking out together, he suggested that he take Pragya home and Damian drop Tanu. Damian wanted to talk to Pragya so he refuted and instead jokingly told Abhi, " You take your date home and I'll take mine. I'm sure you want to spend some alone time with Tanu. I know I want Pragya all to myself."
Once in the car Damian decided he needed to affirm whether she still had feelings for her husband.

"That was nice dinner. Abhi and Tanu make a very good couple don't they?"
"Yes."
"Abhi is getting married to her soon isn't it?"
"Yes."
"Are you going to help them organise it?"
"Yes."
He noticed that she was getting more subdued with her responses and almost as though she was replying automatically, without thinking, slipping in the question would be easy.
"You're going to miss him isn't it?"
"Yes."
"And you still love him?"
"Yes."
Damian braked and stopped the car. Pragya looked at him in surprise wondering why he'd stopped. "Do you know what you just said Pragya?" He asked her gently.
"Ummm..."
"I asked you if you still loved Abhi and you said you did."
"Sorry I wasn't paying attention. Of Course I don't..." Pragya trailed off.
"Pragya, if I ask you something will you give me an honest answer?"
"Yes. Yes I will."
"Don't get me wrong. It is none of my business and Tanu is a very nice person, but she doesn't care for Abhi. What I saw today is making me wonder why if you still love Abhi, you doing this? Why are you meeting other men? Why are you letting him get married to someone else?"
"I don't know about nice person, because she has never been nice to me, but that is probably because I'm married to her boyfriend. I'm doing this because he loves Tanu. Not me. He wants to marry her. And the only way he can do that is if I get married. His Dadi, whom he loves more than anything wants me settled first. I want him happy. His happiness lies with Tanu."
"He cares for you Pragya. And I think he might even love you. But to know for sure you need to fight for him. Tell him your feelings. If you want I can help."
Holding her hand he continued, "Pragya, I already consider you my friend, and as someone who cares I really want you to try. Give me a call if you need someone to talk to."
"Thanks Damian. I hope your search for your Indian bride goes well and that you find true love. I might just call you up for a coffee. Please don't tell anyone though."
"Don't worry Pragya. Good night."

She walked in still thinking about what he'd said. That was the third man whom she wouldn't marry even though she had quite liked him.

"How was your romantic drive. Did he kiss you good night?" a voice teased from behind.
"No, he didn't kiss me good night. We... talked. And decided that this would be the end." she replied as she turned to face him. "And anyways, the first kiss is always for someone special and he wasn't the one."
"Careful Chashmish. Sound like you've already found that special someone. Should I tell Dadi we need to stop looking?"
"No.Yes...I mean no, we don't need to stop looking. There isn't someone..." she glanced down breaking their gaze. She knew she wouldn't be able to lie at that moment and she tried to quash down the desire to tell him the truth.

Abhi kept his voice light as he spoke to her, but hearing her thoughts about first kisses brought back memories of an inebriated Chashmish asking him about kissing and how she'd never kissed anyone. At the time he'd told her that he wouldn't kiss her, but recently the idea held a strange appeal.
Without pushing further, he wished her goodnight and walked away as quickly as he could before he acted on his thoughts.

Part VI - Suitor No. 4 & 5

She was meeting one of her beaus that weekend. It felt strange, referring to him like that, but calling him her boyfriend was so adolescent. She was particularly partial towards him. But then why wouldn't she? His personality was big and bold. And she was attracted to him. She wasn't sure if it was romantic inclination or just good company, but the discovery was making their meetings more enjoyable.

Moksh had planned out the two days, which she was looking forward to. The only hint he had given her was that he was going to take her on all the classic dates. Time was limited because he had a full schedule during the week, so he told her to keep the weekend free for him.

She had never been swept off her feet so completely. True, she had read about it in her books, the romance, of being in love, but the circumstances of her various engagements and the sudden marriage to Abhishek had meant that she had never experienced what it felt like to be so...pampered.

He had taken her for coffee in the afternoon followed by a movie and dinner. It was so typical to what a first date would be that she had to laugh. They had done all three separately before, but to have a complete day with him, doing classic date activities was fun.

The next day was even more eventful. They spent the day at the amusement park. It wasn't what she'd expected from someone like him, but it was almost as though he wanted them to re-live their childhood days.

She was in awe at how fast some of the rides were but was brave enough to try some. They bought cotton candy and souvenirs. She even ended up getting one of the silly pictures that got taken on the rides.

She was exhausted and fell asleep in the car. He woke her up when they got to the mansion and like a gentleman, walked her to the door. Giving her a hug, he told her that he would call her later.

Abhi hadn't gotten to speak to the last suitor. He had caught a glimpse of him as he was driving out from dropping Pragya home, it seemed. And then Tanu had called to meet up with him because she wanted to talk. What a talk that was he remembered.

"Abhi, I think we need to take a break."

"A break? Why? Tanu you do realise I've told Dadi all about us. Dadi has finally agreed to get us married. What is the problem now?"

"Abhi, because I still want to concentrate on my career. And since the behenji is going to be out of your life, we don't need to get married right this instance do we?"

"Tanu. This is not a joke. Here dadi wants Pragya to get married so we can get married, work is really stressful with all the endorsements that have been renewed, Aakash has mentioned that we need to work on a new album and now you're telling me you want a break?"

"Abhi please I just need to sort a few things out. I'll call you okay."

She'd left then. The biggest shock to him was that he wasn't too upset about her wanting a break. If he was honest with himself, it was more of an inconvenience and slightly annoying that she spoke to him, Abhi the Rockstar, like that but he didn't feel a sense of loss.

He went to see Dadi that night. Laying his head on her lap, he told her what Tanu had asked for. And the hurt he had felt. Deep down, he knew that there would be no marriage for him.

"Abhi, sometimes things happen for a reason. You know how you always say that you write your own destiny?"

"Yes Dadi. I still think that."

Stroking his hair she continued "I wish you had a little faith Abhi because you might not believe what I say next. Sometimes, destiny gets written by greater hands than our own. Everything that happens fits into the bigger picture. You might think that you know your destination, but life sometimes takes you down an entirely different path. And when you reach the end, you realise it is where you always wanted to be."

"Dadi right now, there is no destination. However, there is one thing I want to ask you for. Please don't tell anyone. I cannot bear to pitiful looks that everyone will give me. Promise me Dadi."

"I won't tell anyone. When the time is right we'll tell them together okay."

*** *** ***

It had been two weeks since that eventful double date. Abhi had let go of the idea of interfering in Pragya's choice, no matter what Indu daasi said. He had a chat with them to let them know that at the end of the day, if Pragya liked someone they would all be happy about it. They needed to trust her choice. He knew she'd been meeting the last two suitors for the past two weeks.

Work was keeping him busy and good luck played a hand in him meeting Nilay. Strangely it had been during the shoot of an ad for a new clothing line when he'd met him. All he'd been told when he'd started shooting was that the brand was by a young newcomer into the game, who had taken over a few rundown textile mills and rebranded to affordable fashion clothing.

Abhi admired success that came about due to hard work so meeting him when he came to watch the shoot was pleasant. Impressed with Abhi's work, they'd gone out for a drink, when they realised who the other was.

Nilay spoke to Abhi about Pragya. Being aware of the situation, he thought there might be some discomfort. Abhi assured him that there was no need, he wanted Pragya to be happy, whomever it was with.

*** *** ***

Pragya was happy as she disconnected the phone call. She'd met Nilay for lunch that day. He had surprised her by taking her to the park. He'd brought along an extravagant picnic lunch and they sat and spoke. And laughed. They only realised that it was late when it started getting chilly. He had been a perfect date, which was a bonus for her.

They had talked about him expanding his clothing lines brand internationally and the call was to let her know that he would have to cancel their date on the following week. He was flying out to Japan to re-negotiate the contract. And he had wanted her to join him. It was flattering, that he enjoyed spending time with her, but she had to decline stating that she had already made other plans for the weekend and would not be able to make it.

*** *** ***

As Pragya walked back into the house, Dadi who had been talking to Indu Daasi about going for a jagran that night called her over,

"Pragya, where have you been?" Dadi patted the sofa beside her indicating for Pragya to sit down.

"Sorry Dadi. I forgot to tell you, Moksh is taking me to the beach tomorrow so he's asked me to wear something light, so I went shopping."

"Pragya, show us what you've got. Come on don't be shy." Indu daasi chimed in.

Taking out the knee length kaftan, she showed dadi what she'd bought. She had also bought a modest one piece bathing suit with a cover up to wear if she ended up going in the water.

"Dadi, they didn't have anything else. I walked round the whole shopping mall hoping I could get away with something else, but there wasn't anything else. Is it okay?"

"Of course darling. You'll look very pretty in it. Make sure you take lots of photos."

"Yes, Dadi. I will. I'll freshen up and make dinner."

That Saturday was a day of firsts. Pragya had given herself a peptalk and worn the bathing suit and the kaftan. She'd carried sunscreen, a hat and her prescription sunglasses that she'd never really used, in the new tote that she'd got. Adding in the essentials like her mobile and wallet, she walked out and straight into Abhi.

Abhi knew he should have been watching where he was walking. This tendency to run into things...rather people had become a normal occurrence. His justification was that he was on a conference call, trying to sort out dates with Akash and the producers so his focus was on more important things.

His arm weaved round the waist to steady the body and noticing it was her, he automatically pulled her closer. Disconnecting the call he spoke, "Hey Chashmish. What's the hurry?"

"Let me go. I'm getting late." She tried pushing his shoulder so she could move away from him. The sensation of being so close was heady and she needed to remember that they were no longer together. And she wanted to leave before anyone saw her in those clothes.

Still holding her, he loosened his grip and looked down at her,

"Chashmish, What are you wearing? Go change before Dadi sees you like this."

"Dadi knows. I showed it to her yesterday. She's approved of it." She tugged slightly at the bottom, trying to get it to cover more of her.

"You have got to be joking! Dadi doesn't like anyone wearing such clothes. Why would she let you, her bahu, wear such clothes then? I don't like it. I think you should change. Why are you wearing it anyway?"

Pragya hadn't been too sure if she should wear it.And now, Abhishek, who was more aware of fashion thought she needed to change. Did that mean she didn't look nice?

Still thinking about it she replied to his questions " Moksh is taking me to the beach. This what all I could find and Dadi wanted me to fit in when I was there. She insisted I wear it. I guess it doesn't matter whether I look nice or not."

Abhi couldn't believe it. She looked..hot.. but was she really willing to wear..that? Right beach...she was going on a date...okay...he could accept that..but then why was he feeling as though he wanted to keep her here? He felt her thin midriff that fit against his forearm perfectly. His hands gripped the flimsy material of her..dress and he dragged her body up so her face was closer to his.

"Chashmish you'll need to be careful. You're going to be getting a lot of attention."

"So you think I look nice?"

They heard someone clearing their throat and sprung apart. Indu Daasi stood there watching them. They both blushed and pulled apart. Pragya walked off mumbling that Moksh would be picking her up soon whilst Abhi stood rooted to the spot watching after Pragya leave.

Indu didn't waste any time telling Dadi what had occurred. After all, the whole purpose was to make Abhi realise that his wife was very attractive. Remembering the dress that Aliyah had given Pragya during her sangeet and how Abhi had teased her, they insisted that she wear the beachwear on her date.

*** *** ***

He had pulled out all stops to make it a memorable day for her. When he'd called to arrange their date, he'd told her to wear something light and comfortable. They were going to be by the beach and in the sun the whole day.

But reality was more beautiful than expectation. It was by the beach in literal sense. He'd hired a yacht for the day. They had gone out into the sea just off the coast. The could still see the skyline of Mumbai, but the smog that sat over the city was not present over the open waters.

Not only that, there was a beautiful meal arranged and then they cruised around Mumbai and further down the coastline. She'd even tried her hand at navigating the yacht through the waters, with Moksh standing behind her helping her steer in the right direction.

Abhi waited impatiently for Pragya to come back from her day out. He had been restless since she'd left. An uneasiness settled over him as he realised that he hadn't spoken to her much about how everything was going. Now that he didn't have Tanu hovering over his head, he really thought about his future. And hers.

He didn't quite know what he wanted. He thought he'd wanted Tanu, but there was no sense of loss when she asked for a break. Thinking about Chashmish leaving him made him panic. He knew his feelings made no sense and maybe talking to her would put things in perspective.

And the feelings that had coursed through him when he felt her in his arms earlier. He definitely need to talk to her. If only for his peace of mind. But, the conversation didn't happen. Dadi called him away from his waiting, to drive her to the Gurudwara and various other chores that she had to finish.

Part VII - Changing Plans

Four days later, Pragya received a text:
Let's meet up for coffee. I have something I want to talk to you about. 5pm. ChaiCoffee.
She wondered what he wanted to talk about. They hadn't spoken in a while so it was surprising, but she was looking forward to meeting him. Their conversations had been interesting and she knew it would be a fun afternoon. He was already seated when she walked in. He waved her over and they were promptly provided with menus. Coffees were ordered and they settled down and exchanged pleasantries.
"Pragya, I think I've met the one. But, there is a problem."
"Congratulations. What problem though?"
"She was going out with someone I know. It feels almost like I'm poaching on someone's relationship."
"Oh no. How did that happen? Did you know? You do realise that she will need to break it off with the guy if the feeling is mutual."
"Well, we had met before through a mutual friend and I bumped into her a few weeks ago. We ended up going for coffee and then dinners. Initially, it was just as friends but then it got more serious. She did tell me she'd separated from her boyfriend."
"Damian, how do you know she's not going to do the same with you? I mean I hope she doesn't but if she can do that to her boyfriend what is the guarantee that she won't play with your feelings?"
"I don't, but I have bought a ring and I'm going to propose to her. I hope you don't mind but she's meeting us here. In fact, she should be here soon. So as one of my very few friends in India, it means a great deal that you support me."
"You don't have to say that. Of course I'll support you. I'm excited to meet her."
"There she is."
Pragya turned and for an instant was annoyed as to why Tanu was standing close to their table. Leaning over she tried looking round her to find the girl Damian was talking about. Not seeing anyone, it finally fell in place that the person Damian was talking about was indeed Tanu.
Her demeanour had changed. She was actually quite pleasant to talk to. She said "yes" when Damian finally proposed and she looked so happy that Pragya couldn't help but be happy for them. Wishing the newly engaged couple a happy life together, she left them to their celebration.

"Abhishek." She knocked on his closed bedroom door waiting for a response. Not getting one and knowing that he was home, she walked in and found him in the balcony. She hadn't seen him so lost in thought in a long while.
He was thinking about the phone call he'd just received. Tanu's had called to tell him that she found someone else she truly loved. He wanted to laugh. The girl who till a few weeks ago wanted to spend forever with him was in love and engaged to someone else. And not just anyone else...Damian. The suitor who'd come to meet Pragya.
Standing in front of him, she shook him slightly and questioned, "Abhishek, Are you alright?"
"Hey Chashmish. I didn't hear you. When did you come?"
"Just now. When you were staring into space. What were you thinking of?"
"Nothing."
"Is there something you wanted to tell me?"
"No. Not really." He knew that she had enough meeting with Nilay and Moksh. And he wanted her to find the happiness that he couldn't give her. Maybe karma was coming around. He was suffering for the torture he had put her through.
"Is that why Damian called me to meet the love of his life? Who has been separated from her boyfriend for a few weeks now? The girl who looks very much like your girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend. Why didn't you tell me Abhishek? Have I already become nobody to you?"
"Chashmish, I didn't want to bother you. You're busy as it is, finding someone suitable. I didn't think you'd want this burden. And anyways, like Dadi says, since we are getting divorced, I shouldn't have any expectations from you towards me."
"But I thought we were friends Abhishek? I'd rather you have told me about Tanu not wanting to be with you than finding out from someone I just met. My meeting all these suitors has spoilt your life."
"Hey, Chashmish, don't think that. At least now I know for sure that Tanu was never serious about me. It would have been worse if she had left me after the marriage. Now all we need to do is find you the best guy out there who will keep you happy."
"And what about you?"
"What about me? I'm Abhi. The Rockstar. I have millions of female fans. If and when I decide to take the plunge again, I'm sure there will be a long line of women to marry me." Abhi joked but he knew there would never be another marriage. Because subconsciously, he'd compare anyone he met to her.
She left him to his thoughts and went to get dinner ready. Abhishek joined them for dinner and for the first time in a long while it felt like they were a normal family.

Nilay called her when he got back. Stating that he had missed her, he insisted that they meet that evening. The only request was wear comfortable shoes. Exploring different wardrobe possibilities, she decided to wear a mid-length skirt instead of her standard anarkalis.
Dinner was mainly all business talk and Nilay held most of the conversation. He talked about the launch in Japan and what else he needed to do. Whilst she admired the fact that he was serious about work, because she didn't really care about fashion too much, she was getting bored.
Realising, he did change the conversation topic and told her their evening plans. He'd gotten tickets to a play where his company was a major sponsor and there was an after party that they needed to attend for a while.
The play was amazing. And being given house seats meant that she'd had a good view of the stage. Nilay however, had walked out twice to receive urgent work calls. As they moved on to the venue for the after party, he seemed even busier. He did put the phone away eventually and she tried her hand at dancing again, but he was distracted and noticing that, she asked him to take her home.
She knew that they had become good enough friends to be open with him. So she told him that he needed to focus on his career and get that off the ground before deciding to get married. After all she was fine with him taking business calls when he was with her but it does take its toll on a relationship if there was no other conversation.
She didn't know whether to feel elated that she'd avoided a potential disastrous marriage or deflated that she was down to the last potential prospect of getting married, but resolved to trying harder and make it work with Moksh. Abhishek had not even thought of giving the marriage another chance, even after breaking up with Tanu and that should have proved to her that he didn't want her in his life.

Part VIII -Almost Mr. Perfect

Her life was turning around. She remembered the saying that good things came in threes. And it was true. She had very few close male companions in her life. Men she would consider as potential suitors. More so men she would consider as friends. And that was what she'd got. This whole...situation had led her to have three men in her life whom she knew would always be close to her heart regardless of whatever might happen in their future.
And maybe the potential to even be happy again. It was a hard road, and she might never love as much; as completely again, but she was sure she had it in her to love. After all almost perfect was just as good as perfect.
Moksh called as she was thinking, "Hello, beautiful. What are you doing tonight?"
"Hi Moksh. Not much. Why? We hadn't made any plans to meet up had we? I thought you were busy?"
"Look at you. Keeping track of my whereabouts already. When we get married, I won't have to worry about you adjusting."
"Haha. So much confidence? When we get married. Who said I'm definitely marrying you?"
"Come on Pragya. We both know, secretly you want to get married to me. After all what is there not to like about Moksh Sharma?"
Laughing she replied, "Do you really want me to count. But anyway let's wait and watch if your wish does come true. So, why did you call anyways?"
"Before I forget, I've sent something for you. Be ready tonight at seven. I'll come pick you up. It's a work function. Please don't say no. I've got to go. My assistant is calling me. Be ready. Seven pm. Take care." And with that she heard the phone beep out.
He had just blazed through and not really given her an option to agree or disagree. Resigning herself to be ready the following night, she started towards her room to find something appropriate to wear, when the bell rang.
"Pragya Mehra?"
"Yes" she replied to the young man standing at the door.
"Delivery for you."
He handed her the large package and the flowers which he was struggling with. Placing them on the table near the door, she signed the pad he put forward and he was off. Closing the door, she picked up the package first to see if there was a note. Not finding any she looked at the flowers; tucked behind the stems she found the standard florist envelope.
Pragya opened it up to find a note from Moksh.
Don't argue. I've sent you an outfit..
Wear that and be ready.
I'll pick you up.
You'll look amazing. See you tonight!
Pragya walked up the stairs with the flowers and the box. The flowers made her blush. She'd never really been given flowers. She knew it was a bribe, to get her ready for wherever he needed a date tonight. But it was a nice touch she thought as she sniffed the buds. She almost banged into dadi, who asked her what she was doing. Seeing the flowers Dadi pulled her into Indu Daasi's room.
"Dadi, Moksh wants me to go to a work function with him tonight. I'm not too sure what it is but it sounded important. He sent the flowers to convince me."
"That's good Pragya, but what is in the box?" Indu daasi asked.
She opened the package to find an intricately designed blush coloured gown in the box. He'd been thoughtful. Keeping in mind how conscious Pragya got, he'd sent a long gown with sheer sleeves and beadwork on the bodice. The skirt flared from the waist into a tulle skirt. The front was modest, however, the bodice at the back only met at the nape and waist, leaving her back bare.
Even though it was a daring dress, Pragya fell in love with it and hesitatingly asked Dadi if it was okay for her to wear that. Dadi gave her blessings and told her to get ready. Once she'd left, Indu Daasi spoke up,
"Didi, Abhi isn't home today so why did you tell Pragya to wear the dress? I mean there is no problem in her wearing it, but Abhi isn't going to get jealous seeing her dressed like that."
"But he will Indu. Moksh reminds me of Abhi in so many ways. He called me yesterday to ask if it was okay to send a dress for Pragya because he needed to take a date for the function tonight."
"But Didi, how is that helping our plan? Pragya really likes Moksh and she is growing closer to him. What if she falls in love with him?"
"Indu, firstly I know what function this is. Abhi is going to be there because he told me. Secondly, Moksh shared some very interesting information with me when he called yesterday. Wait, let me close the door and I'm telling you."
*** *** ***
Moksh was punctual as usual. He'd put on a suit for the occasion and had even matched his tie and pocket square to her gown. She felt every bit like a diva and it was actually quite nice. He escorted her into the ballroom where the function was being held.
She was awestruck. In the short period of her marriage, she'd never actually gotten the chance to see the glitz and glamour of such events. Moksh had told her that it was a fundraiser for education in rural towns. There were famous personalities from the industry as well as well-known businessmen.
Canapes and drinks were being passed around by waiters in waistcoats and small bar tables dotted the room. He'd told her that there were a few dance performances after the pre-drinks followed by dinner and dance. Moksh played the perfect date. He introduced her to everyone he met and included her in the conversations.
After the dinner service, tables were cleared and moved and the dance floor opened. Pragya watched as couples danced whilst others gathered in groups and tried talking over the music. She excused herself and walked out towards the terrace.
In the quiet she thought of what she was really doing, dressing up, meeting men, going on dates. As much as she tried and she tried so hard, she couldn't forget Abhishek. He had crossed her mind more than once that night. She had compared every man she'd met with him and watching Moksh today in a setting that made him centre of attention, she realised that she'd never stopped.
If Abhishek wanted her to move on she would, but she knew she'd have to tell Moksh honestly that there might never be the same feelings for him. Moksh had watched her for a while now and he had a vague idea of what was about to happen.
"Hey beautiful. Why are you standing out here all by yourself?"
"I was just thinking Moksh. There is something I wanted to tell you. Thank you, for being so wonderfully caring. I've never been made to felt so special before. But I love Abhishek and I don't know if I'll ever be able to stop loving him. I'm so sorry."
"I know Pragya. I've known since the first time we went out."
"I don't understand...What do you mean?"
"Remember our first date, we went out and I asked you why you were doing all this, you explained the situation to me. I understood how you felt when you spoke about Abhishek, not that I didn't try to make you forget him."
"But, then you've still been going out with me and.."
"Pragya, I was going to keep pushing till hopefully one day you fell in love with me. You might never be over him but you've started liking me as well."
"So much arrogance. See this is why you make it so difficult for me to get over him. Why did you have to be so much like him Moksh?"
"Pragya, you'll find something or the other in any man you meet to compare him to Abhi. It's natural. If you still want to go ahead with this wedding, I want you to say yes to me." saying that, he pulled her into his arms.
Leaning her head against his shoulder, she softly spoke, "I need some time Moksh. I need to distance myself from him, forget him before I make a decision. Thank you for being so understanding."
"Let's go inside. I believe this next dance is mine." Saying that he pulled her inside.
Abhi watched them walk away. His grip tightened on the glass he held in his hand. He hadn't realised that she was going to be there and when he had caught sight of her walking out, he'd followed to talk to her. He stopped in his tracks when he saw that her date had followed. The music and the distance prevented him from hearing their conversation but something snapped when he's seen them hug.

He hadn't been home that day. It was getting harder for him to see her distancing herself from him and after mulling it out, he had made up his mind that he would try and ask her for some more time. Maybe they did rush into ending something that hadn't quite started. But what he'd just witnessed confirmed that she had moved on. Tossing back the drink, he left quietly, not wanting to socialise anymore.
