The Night Of Tansen's First Concert

In The Courtyard

Jalal stumbled along the way towards his chambers.

"Jalal" Someone called him. Finding Badi Ammi standing there, he greeted her. "Are you going to sleep Jalal?" "Oh. Yes. Badi Ammi. I am going to call it a day now. I am too drunk." He said the sheepish expression not still leaving his face.

Knowing too well, the reason for it, Maham Anga asked, "You seem really happy today. Is it because of Jodha Begum's letter?"

Jalal almost blushed, "Ahm... Ya."

Maham Anga came and hugged him and said, "I can't tell you how happy I am for you, Jalal. Finally, Jodha Begum has accepted. You gave her, her space; you gave her so much time to know you, to understand you. And now, she has finally admitted her feelings for you." Pulling away, she continued, "Don't you think she deserves you now? She must be waiting for you. Shouldn't you be spending time with her instead?" Saying so, she cupped Jalal's cheek. "You deserve this Jalal after the long wait and the restraint you have shown. You deserve her love tonight. Go to her." She coerced him and she knew it was working.

"I don't think I should go meet her today, Badi Ammi. I am a little too drunk. Jodha Begum doesn't like such things." Jalal said, sounding a little unconvinced.

"Are Jalal, when she has already admitted she loves you and wants you to spend time with her, you really think she will bother about your inebriated state? No. She won't. In fact, as much as I have understood her, she will be upset if you don't go. She would feel rejected. And who knows, whether she would still feel the same tomorrow? What if she scorns you again? No. I really wouldn't want my son to endure this anymore." Maham Anga had convinced Jalal finally.

"I think you are right. I will go." Jalal decided. "Shabba Khair, Badi Ammi."

Jalal left towards Jodha's chambers.

Maham Anga's plan would succeed today. She was really happy. Happy? She was rejoicing in delight. There was no such thing in the letter Jodha had sent to Jalal. That piece of parchment contained only gratitude and pride that Jodha had felt when Jalal had skillfully handled the Tasneem fiasco. The last few words of love and affection and finally accepting Jalal completely were Maham Anga's. Tonight, she would avenge her son. She knew Jodha hadn't accepted Jalal as yet. Woh Jalal ko apnaane ke liye tayyar nahi hain. She laughed cruelly.

Jalal was intoxicated. He wouldn't understand Jodha's aversion to his advances which would push Jodha to take an extreme step and Jalal would be infuriated. No one would be able to save Jodha from Jalal then! Till now, Jalal had always protected his precious Jodha Begum from everything and everyone even willing to give up his throne for her. Not anymore. Incurring Jalal's wrath would land Jodha in doom.

Aakhir gayal sher se zyaada khatarnak kuch bhi nahi. His ego would be hurt. And Jalal took pride in what he was. She smirked. Nothing could go wrong now.

In Jodha's Chambers

Jodha felt strangely pleased. She knew it was because of the concert. Ramtanu Pandey's voice was divine. She was going to retire for bed. She stood next to the window trying to remove her bangle which wasn't working at all. In the sleeveless, near transparent gown Jodha looked delectable capable of invoking every erotic passion in a man, even one with a lot of restraint, her husband.

"Uggh! Why is this not coming out? Moti, please remove this for me." Jodha said stretching out her hand as she had heard the noise of someone coming in. But, when she felt the hand touch hers, she realised it wasn't Moti. She turned to find Shehenshah deftly remove the bangle and put it on the side table.

"Shehenshah? When did you come? There was no announcement and I didn't realise." Jodha said surprised at finding Jalal in her chambers at this hour. He merely stared at her and she shrugged. After all, they had passed that awkward stage when they couldn't look each other in the eye. Suddenly she remembered her attire. She was standing in front of him in a sleeveless gown, something he had never seen her in. She looked at him awkwardly and abruptly moved away to get a shawl to cover herself. Jalal smiled at her cute antics. Women, he thought.

"So, how did you like the concert tonight, Jodha Begum?" He enquired. "It was beautiful. I owe it to you for arranging for Ramtanu to come." She said, smiling at him.

"Your letter... It surprised me to no end." Jalal stated.

"I never have felt more happiness before, Jodha Begum. You were the only one who could stand up against me. One who had the courage to defy me, to tell me I was wrong. You impressed me with your courage and confidence. If I were fire, you were no less. If I had anger in me, you had your ego." He continued, trying his best to convey to her what she actually meant to him.

"Though, you did say everything in your letter, I want to know it from you. Was that true?" Jalal asked. He had to confirm yet again that she did want this, she did want him.

"It was true, Shehenshah. Whatever I wrote, I wrote it from my heart. Those were my heartfelt words." Jodha confessed, completely clueless as to what those words were.

Jalal moved forward and held her hand unable to speak. He was overwhelmed with happiness and joy. He lifted his palm and brushed an errant strand of her hair. Jodha was dumbfounded. She tried moving back. "What are you doing?" She asked sternly. "Didn't you want this? I am surprised with you women." Jalal assumed it was Jodha's playful banter, the final one. He again tried pulling her towards him.

Jodha, shocked, freed herself from his clasp, "We have become friends, Shehenshah. That doesn't mean I am ready for this."

"Didn't you write that in the letter?" Asked Jalal. "Why do you have to deny it now? Jalal enquired incredulously.

He hugged her from the back. That was the last chord. Jodha pushed him away. In his intoxication, Jalal lost balance and fell on the floor. Jodha turned immediately in remorse. She had acted in an adrenaline rush. Jalal's increasing advances had practically scared her. She had been attracted to him. He did affect her. His compliements did make her happy. But, she didn't love him as yet. Or so she thought...

"Shehenshah, I apologise. I didn't mean to..." Jodha tried defending her unpardonable act. She had a bad feeling she had stretched this too far this time.

Jalal's eyes reddened in anger, rejection and insult. He stood up and turned towards Jodha. In a fit of rage, he picked up a vase placed nearby and threw it in her direction in anger. Jodha barely managed to move. "How dare you, Jodha Begum? YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS."

Saying so, Jalal stormed out of the room, leaving a weeping Jodha within.

As Jalal came out, the hurt and pain apparent on his face, Maham Anga, smirked in vindictive pleasure. Finally it happened.

Since Jo thinks jalal is moti... She can blurt out all her unhappiness and bad treatment she receive from ruks and maham.. Jalal always thought these two people are good.. And a drunk never lies.. So she can also disclose her love for jalal..😳 And since Jo is soo drunk.. Jalal will just need to hold her close and steady.,,, 😉
