The Night Of Tansen's First Concert
In The Court
To say Jalal was mesmerized would be an understatement. The music was divine. Indeed, Ramtanu Pandey had a magical voice. His notes seemed to strike a chord with Jalal's inner self. Euphoric, Jalal extended his wine cup for another drink. He didn't know whether it was by coincidence or his mind playing games with him, he felt elated. A cocktail of reasons perhaps... Firstly, the beautiful concert and the songs that the esteemed musician sang were all love songs, secondly, and MOST importantly, Jodha Begum's letter expressing her feelings for him and her obvious excitement at what lay in store for both of them later in the night.
He felt dazed. He glanced at Jodha Begum who was enjoying the concert as much as him. So was everyone else in the Darbar but Jalal had eyes only for Jodha Begum. She was killing him in every way possible. Through the evening, as the concert proceeded, he just got visions of Jodha and him in every intimate position there is. Her doe eyes that he would gladly drown in, her bronze skin, so soft and smooth, he would lay kisses all over her and yet never be satiated, her fragrance...
Gosh! He came back to his senses. What was wrong with him? He chided himself mentally. Why couldn't he stop his train of thoughts? He knew the answer though. Tonight was his completely. After the great deal of patience he had showed, it was time he enjoyed his reward. No. He wouldn't rebuke himself today. He would imagine and imagine more because he knew reality would be a thousand times better than any of his vivid imaginations.
As the song changed, so did the mood...
Jodha was lying in the Hamam. He inched closer towards her bare chested covered in a mere shawl. He paused to take in what lay before him, literally. Jodha Begum clad in a saree with no jewellery on her except a strange expression on her face. Something Jalal hadn't seen before. Raw desire. He realised she wanted him as much as he wanted her. He sat down next to her and touched her cheek with his fingers. His fingers moved of their own accord down her cheek. He touched her bright red, kissable lips, he heard her sharp intake of breath.
His hands travelled downwards towards her arm, their fingers entwined... In one swift motion, he pulled her up towards him. She crashed onto his chest. Their noses touching. Jalal inched closer towards her face. Their lips were almost touching...
Jalal couldn't feel any wine flowing and realised his cup was empty. Hamam? He laughed mentally. Jodha Begum, you are driving me crazy. I don't think I will last any longer than this.
He looked at her figure... She was so entranced by the music, her eyes closed, her fingers going along with the beats...
Jalal walked into Jodha's chambers to find the room lit more brightly than he had ever seen. He walked in to find candles lit everywhere and the Queen lighting a candle in the middle of the room. Jalal moved forward and hugged Jodha from the back allowing his arms to travel down hers. He could feel her surprise but she wasn't displeased at all, he figured. He bent down to the crux of her neck and inhaled her fragrance. Jodha Begum smelled of roses and jasmine. His nose touched her skin and she shivered.
"Tell me, that you don't love me. Tell me that you don't feel anything for me. Tell me your heart doesn't beat for me." He whispered huskily in her ear. Well. Jalaluddin Mohammad was indeed a very charming man. No woman could resist him. Jodha was no different, he smiled.
Her hands held his and she blushed. She slowly untangled herself from his enticing hold and moved facing away from him. She knew if she looked him in the eye, she would be a goner. She tried defending her stance.
"No. I don't have feelings for you. Not at all." She too whispered... She didn't know why though. She could have shouted. There was no one outside to hear. But she didn't. She whispered. Her tone giving her away completely. It sounded shallow to Jodha herself. Jalal read between the lines. What is with women and backing away after committing? He shrugged. Fine then. Two can play a game.
He turned and moved closer to her, placing his palm on her shoulder. He slowly traced the whole of her arm, finally entwining her fingers with his. He moved closer to her, his lips grazing her ear lobe "Why are you even here then? If you don't like me, you don't have any feelings for me, then go away. Go away from me. Don't come close to me." He shoved her away with the same hand he had just held.
As expected, woman's instincts kicked in and Jodha reacted just as Jalal wanted. "No. I didn't mean that..." She tried convincing him simultaneously holding his hand in both of hers. Finally. He thought. In turn, he now held her hand, and pulled her towards him. Jodha was now up against his back. She lay her head on his back enjoying the feel of it while Jalal pulled her arm in front effectively entrapping her. He then took her other arm already resting against his taut shoulder and grazed it with his lips. Allah! So soft like silk... Jalal felt drunk... His head swam for a minute.
"Jodha Begum" Jalal said against her hand, still held in his, "I have waited so long now. Finally, you did accept me. Tabhi toh aapne hume apne paas bulaaya." Partly to her and partly to himself convincing himself that it was real and not a figment of his fantasy.
"Nahi. No. I didn't call you." Jodha said and pulled away yet again. But she was giving in. Jalal went in for the kill. He put both his hands on her shoulder and moved down to her waist, he touched her bare waist. He breathed in sharply. While unsettling Jodha, he himself was losing it. He just wanted to pull her against him and make her feel the extent to which she affected him.
He whispered playfully, "Acha, you didn't call me... Okay. Then. I will leave..." The word hanging ominously in the air that had abruptly changed in a matter of a few minutes.
"So. Do I leave?" Jalal asked rhetorically. "Jodha held onto his arms, tightening her hold on him. She leaned in giving him more access. Jalal had won. Jodha Begum had finally given in. He blew the candle close to him looking forward to probably the most wonderful night of his life...
Ramtanu's voice echoed in his ears as the Emperor realised it was yet another dream. He groaned. He could not stand this any longer. He stood up to leave looking at Jodha one last time.
"Shehenshah! The concert is not over yet." Badi Ammi said.
"No, Badi Ammi. I want to go." Saying so, he walked out heavily drunk with no control upon himself.
