In The Royal Gardens
The moon in its full glory was smiling at her from its humble abode. The gentle breeze was tugging at her flowing dupatta. The air smelling of fresh roses teased her nose. On any other day, the Hindu Begum would be found enjoying these wonders of nature in her favourite gardens during this time. But not today. Jodha was too upset to appreciate nature's beauty today.
Nothing could please her. Her favourite delicacies lovingly prepared by her best friend Moti, little Rahim's riddles, Salima Begum's advice... Nothing at all. Exhausted, she had taken refuge in her favourite spot in the palace but to no avail. She could not overcome the stinging feeling in her heart. This was the seventh consecutive day that HE had completely ignored her for THAT WOMAN. That vile lady, who had graced the palace a week ago, had taken all of his time.
After THAT fateful night, Jalal had distanced himself from her. He never came to her quarters as he had promised. Whenever she went to him, he never even permitted her in. If she forcefully barged in, he would make up an excuse of paucity of time and take her leave. Surprisingly, though, she noticed not once, but many times now, that he always took out time for that wretched dancer and spent many a moment with her.
Within a short span, everything had changed in this Queen's life. The king who used to worship the ground she walked on, now doesn't even bother to acknowledge, let alone greet her. Jodha was not included in any important discussion regarding the court or the people. He never invited her to sit with him in the Diwan-e-Khas, which was a rare privilege for his other Begums but not for Jodha.
He never sat with her, both chatting away to their hearts' content, like before. In simple words, Jodha's position now was very much like all other Queens of the Shehenshah in the Harem; something she had never experienced earlier.
This not surprisingly did not go down well with Jodha Begum's inflated ego.
Jodha now spent all her time cursing that dancer cum witch, Benazir. Hate wasn't the word. This stunning beauty had come like a whirlwind from Kabul and destroyed her "Basa Basaya Ghar". She and her obnoxious clothes, combined with her excessively flirty behavior had not only invited Jodha's anger but also ignited jealousy in her. The latter, of course, unbeknown to this fiery Begum.
But, Jodha never reflected upon this current situation like she used to. It never occurred to her that all this would have happened even in Benazir's absence. Jalal would have ignored and ill- treated her the same way. He would idle away his time but refuse to be with her, though, sans Benazir. It was her fault that she had pushed him away. It was her fault that she had rejected him. Jealousy blinded the queen and she refused to realize her mistake. Not even once.
Now as she sat alone, Jodha reminisced the happy times in Agra not so long ago. The Tasneem issue had brought Jalal and Jodha closer than before. She had become his Khas Begum officially. Even otherwise, she had proved herself to be clever and totally different from everyone else, when she had prevented Ruqaiya's divorce thus showing that she wasn't jealous or desirous of her Audha or status.
Many a time, Jalal would join her here, in the same gardens at the same time for no reason but to be with her. She had grown to like his company, his jokes, his witty remarks, his taunts too. His image crystal clear in her mind's eye, Jalal had slowly started affecting Jodha with nothing else but his hundred watt smile...
In Jalal's Balcony
The tired king stood in his balcony staring at the moon. It was indeed breathtaking. No, not the one in the skies, but the unblemished moon in HIS own palace. His doe-eyed queen looked exceedingly beautiful tonight. His eyes softened as he continued gazing at this wonder. He was refreshed... beyond expectation. It had been a while now that the furious Shehenshah had stopped visiting his once favourite queen. Well, he had his reasons... She had infuriated him beyond repair this time. Yet, the man in him could not stop eyeing the woman in this angel-turned-witch.
Her long, silky tresses wrapping her like a garment, her kohl-lined deep brown hazel eyes, her untainted skin, dressed in a beautiful lehenga of his favourite colour; green, she was picture perfect except...for her dazzling smile, that could make a man go weak in his knees.
If only, she hadn't let IT happen. If only, he had it in him to forget and forgive. If only...
