Part 11 - Drunk Jodha Special 😆

Present

In Jalal's Chambers

"Because I don't actually hate him" Said Jodha slightly blushing.

Jalal stared at the beauty in front of him, dumbfounded. The night's events were too hard for him to process. She didn't hate him. Well, he knew that. She had told him that on an earlier occasion regarding the Tasneem issue. She had said she didn't hate him anymore because he had started understanding her and he was working for the good of the people. But, now, it was different. At least, it seemed so. The slight colour of Jodha's cheeks hadn't gone unnoticed by him. Was it just possible that she did indeed like him? Possible. Yet. Yet. Jodha had pushed him when he had tried reducing this nagging distance between them. This was muddling indeed.

Suddenly, he felt a tug at his arm. He broke off from his sudden reverie and looked down to see Jodha impatient. What is it, Jodha Begum?"

"What is wrong with you? I have asked you the same question three times now. Why are you being such a pain today, Moti?" Asked Jodha, supposedly exasperated with a frown on her face. Jalal couldn't help but smile. She was so enchanting as a woman that he found it difficult to concentrate on anything else, as a drunk wife, she was so mesmerizing that the only thing Jalal could stop himself from doing was wrap her into his arms and kiss the life out of her. Right now, she looked like an adorable child. He selfishly wished that she drinks again sometime...

"Uggh! What is wrong with you Moti? I will send you back to Amer if you behave like a dreamy puppy.' Jodha reprimanded Jalal, having erroneously assumed he was Moti.

"What is it? What do you want?" Jalal asked. "What??????????????" Jodha appeared shocked. Jalal was surprised too, why was Jodha shocked? Did she realise he was indeed Shehenshah? He thought to himself.

"When did you start ordering and demanding, Moti? You are throwing your weight around like HIM." Jodha noted albeit sadly. Jalal almost laughed earning a stern, a very stern glare from Jodha. "I am sorry. Who HIM? Who throws their weight around with YOU, Jodha Begum? I think you must mean HER, as in you because no one in here has the authority or the guts to do that except you."

"I wish." Jodha said, moving back, rather staggering back. She stumbled but held onto Jalal's arm to balance herself. Involuntarily, Jalal caught her and they stood in each other's arms staring at the other.

After what seemed like eternity, the inebriated queen broke the stare, "My eyes are watering. Why are you staring so much? Don't you know the benefits of blinking your eyes?" She questioned.

"I am sorry, Begum Sahiba. This ignorant soul didn't know anything until you came by." Jalal played along. He was enjoying this. Reluctantly, he broke off from the supposed hug.

"Are you drunk Moti? You seem to be." Jodha sighed, defeated. Something was wrong with her friend today. Maybe she was sick? Or one of the other bandhis had made her drink wine or something? She looked around trying to take stock of the situation.

"Look, who's talking." Jalal muttered to himself, conveniently looking at the vase by his bed side table. "Did you say something? I have sharp ears." Jodha quizzed.

"Not at all. Kisiki majaal jo AAPKE saamne kuch kahe?" "That's better then. There is another thing I wanted to ask. Why have you started calling me Jodha Begum out of the blue?" Jodha wondered. She felt heady tonight but she had sense enough to notice that.

"I think you ought to sleep, RANI Sahiba?" Jalal corrected himself. "No. I am not sleepy. I want to talk to Shehenshah, once and for all, tonight. Let him come. I don't know where he has gone. Do you know where that witch has taken him in the dead of the night? I mean, I have been waiting here for so long now. I am tired. I want to go sleep." Jodha yawned momentarily closing her eyes.

"What do you want to talk to me about, Jodha Begum?" Jalal asked curiously.

Jodha scowled. "The only thing I want to ask YOU is, to go retire for the night. You don't seem to be in your senses. You are assuming things. Are you impersonating Shehenshah or something? Ask you, it seems. I want to ask Shehenshah, not you, about what exactly is going on with Benazir. What was she doing in his bedroom? He didn't allow me to come in the other day, and today he was watching her dance with so much fire in his eyes, it almost burned me. Why did she even come? Every bane in my life has started from her. The day she came, he insulted me by asking her to sit with him, in MY place. The day she came, he almost asked me to leave from his room, in front of HER and not only that, gave my armlet to HER. And..."

"But you said you didn't want it. You returned it to me.. Shehenshah. Then how does it matter who I... he gives it to?" Jalal queried.

"Who said I didn't want it?" Jodha reverted. "Of course I wanted it. It was precious and beautiful. Now it is soiled by HER touch. He made her wear it on her FOOT. Can you believe it? Thank the stars, he didn't put it on her foot. For a moment, I thought, he would do it. Luckily, he didn't. He had some sense." Jodha decided.

Jalal's doubt was affirmed. She had wanted it. She liked it. But she had returned it. Why? He knew the answer as well as he knew the reason back then. He had wanted to know from her but he had known that it was Jodha Begum's twisted way of revolting. Not only revolt, but also to find for herself where she stood now, that another lady had come in. He had purposely gifted the armlet to Benazir. She didn't deserve it. He had specifically got it made for Jodha Begum. It was typical of her taste in jewellery, in which he was well versed by now. Women, he mused.

"If you liked it, why did you return it to me.. him? You should have just kept it. He didn't ask you to return."

"I wanted to know if he would refuse like every other time and make me keep it." Jodha declared sadly.

"But, he didn't. Instead, he was grateful that I had returned it." She added.

"What exactly do you want m..him to do? Don't you want him to agree with everything you say or do? When he does precisely that, you have a problem again." Jalal wasn't going to give in to Jodha's childish yet dangerous charms.

"I wanted him to do whatever he has always been doing. Give it back to me. I thought he would at least be offended when I returned like he was when I returned the Farmaan for winning the game of chess with Rukaiya Begum. He made me accept it. This time..."

"Basically, you want him to pamper you and spoil you? Isn't that what you want? He must beg and plead with you, and then you will agree as a favour though your answer would have been a yes right from start." Jalal deduced.

"Well, cajoling your wife isn't bad. How do you think we will have the interest to please them unless they tell us we matter to them?" Jodha argued. "Women enjoy attention and I am no different."

"Despite enjoying and craving for Shehenshah's attention, you assume fake airs as if they don't matter to you. He doesn't matter to you." Jalal complained.

"Isn't that an encouragement for him to do better?" Jodha carelessly commented.

"Is this an exam that you are trying to encourage' him? If I may remind you, he is your lawfully wedded husband and he has no need to pamper you." Jalal looked offended and at the same time, very much pleased with the new developments that he was being acquainted with.

"That is very much obvious to me, now. There is no need for you to rub salt in the wound. You know what, I am going to sit down. My legs are killing me." Saying, Jodha stumbled forward as Jalal tried helping her, but she managed to sit down on the floor much to Jalal's displeasure resting her head against the side of the bed.

"Jodha Beg... Rani Sahiba, if I may be allowed to inform you, there is a huge bed right behind you, it is extremely comfortable and luxurious that I had ordered especially from Persia. If you care to look around, there are a number of couches and chairs for you to sit and relax. In spite of all these comforts, would you still like to sit on the floor? It doesn't befit Shehenshah's Begum." Why would she sit on the floor now? Jalal wondered.

Something definitely was twisted in Jodha Begum's brain. Though she tried to camouflage with all her mature and responsible and selfless attitude, it was evident that her mental condition wasn't really stable. Kisse pala pad gaya.. Jalal thought. He had fallen for such a complicated personality. He admitted though, gladly, that he had indeed fallen for a complex person like Jodha because she was complex. Other Begums who vied for his attention could never match up to Jodha. She was a valley of talents.

"I rather not do any such thing. If Shehenshah comes in, me might start chiding me for exercising my rights on HIS property." Jodha stated pulling her legs close to her and wrapping her arms around them.

Jalal chuckled "His chambers count as his property. You are exercising your rights on his room."

"That is...true, I guess. But rules have exceptions." Jodha defended her now baseless stance.

"Fair enough." Saying so, Jalal too went ahead and sat beside her on the floor.

"See, I told you, this is fun." Jodha looked at him in glee.

"I suppose..."

"What do you think Shehenshah feels for Benazir? You think he has fallen in love with her?"

"Ahm... I don't think so. If you have noticed, he is close to Benazir whenever YOU try to get close to him. There may be something in there..."

"You think he is purposely doing that to make me envious?" Jodha asked her eyes shining.

"Who knows? He is the Shehenshah, after all. He can do anything he wants."

"I am so pleased now. I can't even express how glad I am. You are smart, Moti." Jodha smiled, nodding her head cutely.

Oh, Jalal could have pulled her cheeks...

"Why do you think he is doing it?" Jodha interrogated, the picture becoming clearer to her now.

"To do whatever he has been doing. To hurt you. To sadden you. Surprisingly though, you were affected. If you don't care for him, you don't even accept him as a husband, it beats me as to why my closeness with any other woman impacts YOU." Jalal said, his tone serious as the topic veered in the unpleasant direction.

"I don't know. It does. I myself was surprised as to why it affects me. But, it does." Jodha said honestly.

"Why did you push me, Jodha Begum? Why did you reject me the other night after calling me. I never forced myself on you. I kept my promise. Yet, you purposely insulted me." Jalal asked, direct and frank. He was done with the games now. He also was aware of Jodha's weakness tonight. Her controls were down. She would speak her mind.

"I was afraid." Jodha replied meekly, cowering down in fear with the very mention of that fateful night.

"Afraid?" Jalal repeated. "Afraid of what?" He questioned. Why did she have to bring up new theories now?

"I was afraid that I would lose what little I had. I don't want to be like any other Begum in the Harem. Have you seen them? Waiting day and night for Shehenshah to spare a glance at them. And, look at Shehenshah. He doesn't even care to know if they exist or not. They would have been new Begums at some point in their lives. They would have been pampered and spoilt like me. Yet, now they have no value. I don't want to be them." Jodha concluded expressing all her bottled up emotions.

"But..." Jalal was interrupted by Jodha again. "But, I see that what Maham Anga said is indeed true. I was a toy that Shehenshah liked playing with for so many months and now he has found another doll. He changes his interest faster than he changes his clothes."

"Badi Ammi? Where did she come from? What are you saying?" Jalal examined. He wasn't liking where this was going. Why did she say Badi Ammi said something like that to Jodha Begum? Badi Ammi would never say that.

"She did. In the initial days I was here. I brushed it off. But somehow, the thought went deep and I reacted. The day Shehenshah came in to meet me, I pushed him because I hadn't called him. That letter... Moti, didn't you give the letter? You gave it to Shehenshah only right? It had nothing like he mentioned. I had just expressed my pleasure in the manner in which he resolved the Tasneem issue since I couldn't personally tell him. Why did he misunderstand? Oh. And I didn't really push him. He lost his balance because he was drunk."

"And that was another thing. He was drunk. You really think it was worth it the first time when he was so intoxicated?" She fired a question at him breaking him from his reverie.

Okay... He was trying to process all this. He did not doubt Badi Ammi one bit. But he also knew Jodha did not lie and she did not assume things. Jodha Begum thought the best of people. She wouldn't accuse Badi Ammi without reason. He concluded that some misunderstanding would have taken place.

She didn't call him? She didn't want to spend time with him? He was hurt. But he was also mystified that the letter that Badi Ammi read to him stated in crystal clear terms that Jodha wanted him to come to her. Did Badi Ammi again misunderstand? Jalal tried reasoning. Yet it seemed very shallow to his own self. Too many misunderstandings and coincidences. Had someone changed the letter before it reached him? There were quite a few people in his own palace who did NOT want them together. He would have to check with Badi Ammi again. Maybe, she would recognize the hand writing on careful inspection.

"Do you think it was worth it the first time when he was so intoxicated?" Jodha repeated her question a second time. Jalal caught it now. He couldn't believe his ears. Was Jodha Begum actually telling him that she did not want to consummate their marriage then because he had been drunk? He was amazed. He hadn't known earlier that Jodha Begum was capable of such... erotic thinking. He mentally ticked himself off. This was Jodha Begum. She was capable of doing anything. He sniggered. This ought to be fun.

"Why didn't you tell him the reason then? He would have understood." Jalal was treading in dangerous territory.

Jodha stared at him as if she had seen a ghost "Have you lost your mind? Will I go tell HIM of all the people that I wanted him to remember our first time? What would he think of me?"

Jalal could barely control the vindictive pleasure he gained by this new found knowledge. He was going to have the time of his life in the morning when Jodha Begum would regain her senses. She won't be able to look him in the eye if she gets even a hint of what she had spilled tonight.

"Why do you seem happy?" Jodha asked.

"Nothing at all..."

Jodha suddenly stood up. Jalal followed her not knowing what she planned to do now. She could barely walk straight and he too was tired. It was well into the night. "Jodha Begum, why don't you call it a night? It is late. Chances are Shehenshah won't come in now." He tried placating her excited nerves. Allah knows how her family had managed her when she was a child. Her adamancy was the talk of the town. He had an inkling at the impression people had about her, at the least, the people of Agra, who had seen her the most. People respected Jodha Begum like no other but they also knew about his immense attraction towards her. They thanked their stars that Jodha Begum wasn't in the least like his other queens. She wouldn't take undue advantage of his liking for her.

Jodha walked towards the window and stood there looking at the sky. Jalal followed her and called out from just behind her "Jodha Begum?"

Jodha turned to find Shehenshah standing in front of her. "Shehenshah, aap yahan? I didn't hear you come in and where did Moti go?" Jodha asked surprised that she hadn't seen him come in. No one had announced his arrival.

Jalal was open mouthed. She suddenly realised it was him? Wine was making her see things. Was this how it was when people drank for the first time? He didn't even remember when he had had wine for the first time.

"Well, guards were tired. Motibai went out as I came in." He said trying his best to appease her.

"Guards were tired? I understand. You should give them a break, you know. They work so hard." Jodha said as always, her generous self without realizing that guards had shifts...

Before Jalal could answer, her attention diverted back to the beautiful sky above.

"I want the moon. Get the moon for me." Jodha suddenly demanded.

"Excuse me, what did you say?" Jalal asked.

"I said I want the moon." Jodha repeated.

Jalal stopped for a moment before holding out his hand for Jodha. She looked at him quizzically, not knowing where this was going. Why couldn't he get the moon for her? He nodded, urging her to take it. She put her hand in hers and he clasped her hand tight. He led her into the room towards his dressing table. "Where are you taking me?" Jodha asked.

Jalal didn't answer. He stopped right before the dressing table. He moved to the side so Jodha could see herself in the mirror. He went behind her and kept both his hands on her either shoulder and said, "Your wish fulfilled, Jodha Begum. The moon, look" He indicated to her reflection in the mirror.

Jodha turned somber. The air turned tense. She tilted her head to the side to look at him.

"Yes," He agreed with her. "Jodha Begum, the moon you see in the sky has dark spots. Its tainted. But the moon you see in this mirror, is unblemished. If you don't know yet, Jodha Begum, aap humari zindagi ka chaand hain." Jalal whispered his tone husky. Jodha blushed.

"And now, since I have fulfilled your wish, you must fulfil mine." Jalal traded with her lightening the situation. He was losing every amount of self-control he had. The woman who had made him crazy for her was right here, in his arms, barely in her senses, ready to be taken by him, yet he couldn't go against his word of not touching her unless she wanted. He moved away and Jodha gasped at the loss of his warmth.

"What is it?" She turned around, suddenly everything seemed so surreal. The room looked so beautiful and everything appeared so different, she felt light headed. Shehenshah suddenly seemed more inviting than ever before. She wondered what he would ask. Maybe...

"I would request you to sleep now. It is late. I am famished and so are you. You need some rest." Saying Jalal, again held onto her hand and led her to the bed. Uggh! This is what he wanted. I imagined, rather over imagined things. Looking at the bed, she started. "This is not my bed. I had asked Moti to change the covers in the morning and I am pretty sure she did it. How did they change again?" Jodha innocently countered.

Jalal chuckled. "Jodha Begum, your covers didn't change on their own accord. This is my bed and these covers were asked for by me." He cleared. "And before you think of going back to your room, let me tell you, that you will be sleeping here tonight. You aren't particularly in you... I mean you aren't well enough. Its better you stay here. I won't bite you." Jalal clarified.

Jodha sat on the bed resting her head against the head rest. She was tired and sleepy. Jalal moved to the other side, before he could sit though, Jodha stopped him "Which is your side of the bed?" Jalal stared. "This side is mine." He said and lay down on the opposite side. "Good. This side is mine and I don't change sides for anyone or anything." Jodha declared. "Not even for Sukanya when she used to sleep in my room." She added.

Jalal smiled. Jodha Begum and her antics. Side of the bed. This was another thing they had in common. Both of them preferred the right side. He had lied to avoid further talk. If she wanted the right side, she could have it. He turned to put out the bed side lamp when Jodha stopped him. "I can't sleep like this."

She grumbled.

Now what? "Why? What is wrong now?"

"Look at me! I am all decked up and I cannot sleep with so many ornaments on me." Jodha said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Okay. Remove it then." Jalal said, not knowing the problem.

"I cannot remove it on my own. My hands are shaking, look!" Jodha said.

Okay.. so now what?

"So, what so? I want you to help me. Isn't that obvious?" Jodha said.

Jalal feared. This was his breaking point. He wasn't sure of himself anymore...

The proximity...
