PART 5
Life was never the same again for Geet. Geet had started living a bit. Sid and Meera had always been beside her in every step they took but she could not let go of her habit of writing to Armaan in her diary. She sometimes wondered about the stranger who had taught her to live again. It was so weird how a stranger she did not even know the name of had actually influenced her in a big way.
The days flew away and suddenly they were all finished with their final semester examinations and suddenly it was time to bid each other good bye.
Geet, Meera and Sid had been an inseparable part of each other. Years ago when they were in standard three they had started their journey together in a hostel in Mussoorie. It was a beautiful hill station and there bunch of five popularly known as the famous five or F square had found a home away from home. Geet, Meera, Sidhdharth, Armaan and Yash were together since then. They had been friends and family in the hostel.
Yash had always been the serious types who had made it his point not only to study himself and excel but also make each one of them study as well. It was as if Yash was the nerdy of the group.
Sidhdharth or Sid as they called him was the naughtiest one. He would always do something or other mischief and then others had to bail him out of the situation. In spite of that nobody could hate him simply because he was too adorable to be hated.
Meera was what we can call as the typical girlie girl. She was the types who read romantic stories and dreamt of a prince charming coming in white horse. Yet she was the most compassionate one among all and she was the softest one whom everyone in the group made it a point to protect from the school bullies.
Geet was the mixture of opposites. One side she was the best basket ball player for the school tem, the strict head girl, the outspoken one. On the other hand she was a loyal friend, a cutie pie when it came to making someone bend down for her choices and a shy one when it came to her own feelings.
Armaan was like the vibrant force of nature. He was the one to tie these four people together. He had been a friend to everyone and he was the one who held these completely different people together in one thread.
Over the years as they grew up Geet started looking up to Armaan as something more than just friends. The strong and outspoken girl actually found a shy lover in herself who could not even speak her heart out to Armaan. After all she valued Armaan's friendship too much and did not want her love to be a barrier between the two.
However Armaan had sensed her feelings. Why not? After all Armaan himself was going through the same. So he had planned everything with Sid and Yash and with the help of Meera had brought Geet out in the school garden just on the night of their Annual function in their last year of school that is class twelfth.
Geet was having some weird feeling when Meera had asked her to go to the garden. And then suddenly Armaan approached her. The look in his eyes had given Geet goose bumps. Armaan slowly came and held her hand softly in his palm and said with a love filled voice," Geet Handa, I have known you from the time I did not even realize what friendship means. On the initial encounters I had fought with you and you had given me back exactly what I gave you with interest. Slowly we became friends and then best friends. Today almost at the verge of ending of our school life I realized how much you mean to me. You my dear have become a part of my life I cannot do without. To sum it all up in simple words all I can say is I love you Geet , I love everything about you and I love you as your eccentric true self. Will you be mine?"
Geet whose heart had thudded a bit watching Armaan come had lost in his world as he spoke about the past. Her heart stopped beating altogether when he said that he loves her. All she could do was dip her head a little nodding in acceptance even when a red hue had covered her cheeks.
Armaan had smiled endearingly making her blush more. Slowly he took her in his embrace offering her the safety and security of his love. Geet just hugged him tighter absorbing the warmth of his love. Her fairy tale had come true and she did not need anything else. Armaan had chuckled a little and said in a mischievous tone," I thought it is better I propose you. If I had left it you would have not spoken your heart out even when we were eighty."
The taunting did it. Sherni Geet was back in action.
Geet: "How dare you Armaan? You are making fun of me."
Armaan:" I know Geet truth hurts. But you have to understand that you are the biggest dumbo I have ever met. I had been so obvious yet you could not guess."
Geet:" Well you know what, just go to hell. You are supposed to be sweet and romantic not annoy me to death."
Geet had just turned to walk away when Armaan yanked her such that her back collided with his chest. He encircled her waist bringing her even more closely. This was the first time Geet's untouched self was being touched by a man and she shivered with the proximity. Armaan whispered softly in her ears," Don't you dare go away from me Geet because I will never let you go. I will always find a way back to you one way or other."
Geet had submitted herself letting go of her inhibitions as she said softly, "Armaan I can never really go away from you because you are there in my being. "
They had stood there for some time until their gang had come and demanded a party. They had been the second couple as Meera and Yash had already started dating from 11th. Yash the nerdy had actually proposed Meera and Meera who had always been smitten by Yash had gladly accepted. Life was so beautiful for all of them and they did not think anything could ruin them.
Meera came in and watched Geet's glassy look and asked softly," Thinking about Armaan, right?"
Geet:" The last farewell I attended was with him for our twelfth. We had our first dance together and this time he is no longer there. How is it fair? He was supposed to be here with me."
Meera knew the pain. If Geet had lost her love then they had lost their dearest friend, the one who had tied them together. After Armaan passed away everything seemed to have fallen apart like a card house.
Yash broke up with her immediately after. Geet lost her will to live and barely survive like a living corpse. She and Sid who were once best friends barely talked to each other. It was as if with Armaan gone everything good was gone as well. Meera had painfully realized that Armaan was the thread tying them together and with him gone everything had fallen apart.
Geet said as if in trance," We are doing wrong you know Meera. Armaan had been so proud of our friendship. By letting that friendship go to vain we are actually insulting him and his memories. "
Meera knew Geet was right somewhere. But the thought of being friends with Yash and behaving as if everything is normal, everything is sane was too painful. She asked unsurely," But Yash?"
Geet: "I am not an inhuman Meera that I will ask you to be just friends with Yash. But Sid can be your friend right?"
Meera: "I know. But the truth is he is our friend as well. He was a part of the famous five."
Geet: " Meer, I won't put you through that unless you are ready. And you are far from being ready dear. Yash will be our friend but I won't let you be in his proximity until I know you are ready."
Geet hugged Meera silently providing her the shoulder to cry upon.
The farewell party was over and soon the semester exams approached marking the end of their four years journey together. There had been many of them placed in campus placement and many who were still undecided about their career path.
Geet did not worry about the future anymore. Life had never gone as she had planned so she had decided to go unplanned this time.
Mujhe yunhi karke khwaabon se judaa
Jaane kahan chup ke baitha hai khuda
Jaanu na main kab hua khud se gumshuda
Kaise jiyun rooh bhi mujhse hai judaa
She just knew this time she had to walk alone. Her friends had supported her for long, sometimes at the cost of their own well being. She wanted to let them free of the responsibility of taking care of her and be just her friends again.
She had received an appointment letter for some Khurana enterprise for the post of business analyst. There was a training program for one month after which there will be a test and based on her performance she would be taken up in some project.
The offer was lucrative and Khurana enterprise was one of the leading groups of company of the continent. She just took it.
They all had known that Geet will leave for Mumbai soon yet none of them really wanted to leave her alone. Sid and Meera both had got placed in some other companies. Meera was posted in Delhi while Sid will be in Bangalore. They all were equally worried of their unknown future.
Kyun meri raahein, mujhse pooche ghar kahan hai
Kyun mujhse aake, dastak pooche dar kahan hai
Raahein aisi jinki manzil hi nahin
Dhoondho mujhe ab main rehta hoon wahin
Dil hai kahin aur dhadkan hai kahin
Saansein hai magar kyun zinda main nahin
Bidding each other good bye they went for their hostel rooms one last time. Everything was packed. Geet had packed two suitcases to take with her to Mumbai while rest of the things was packed to be dispatched to her home address. Her relationship with her parents had been minimal for all the long years for her. It was her last night in hostel and she wanted to stay awake and witness this last night at a place which had given her a sense of belonging and helped her heal.
Picking up her diary geet started writing,
Dear Armaan,
I missed you today. It was our last day of college life. I, Sid, Meera, Yash...everyone will part our ways. I am leaving this place carrying away only memories in my heart. I wanted no scratch that, I needed you today. I wanted you to hold my hand while I plunge into the unknown. I don't know what is more painful Armaan?... The fact that I will lose my last connection with you tomorrow or the painful realization that you will never ever come back to make new memories with me?
Rait bani haathon se yun beh gayi
Takdeer meri bikhri har jagah
Kaise likhun phir se nayi daastan
Gham ki siyahi dikhti hai kahan
Aahein jo chuni hain meri thi raza
Rehta hoon kyun phir khud se hi khafa
Aisi bhi hui thi mujhse kya khata
Tune jo mujhe di jeenay ki saza
I wish Armaan we had more time together. I had known you as an enemy; I had known you as my best friend. I had seen the teacher inside you who used to guide me whenever my steps faltered. But I hardly knew you as a lover. I know you loved me, probably more than I loved you. But I wish I had more of it in my memories dear. I sometimes feel I should have been in that flight with you. Dying with you seems less painful than living without you. But I would live simply because this is probably what you would have wanted from me.
Banday tere maathe pe hain jo kheenchi
Bas chand lakeeron jitna hai jahaan
Aansu mere mujhko mita te rahe
Rab ka hukam na mit ta hai yahan
Raahein aisi jinki manzil hi nahin
Dhoondho mujhe ab main rehta hoon wahin
Dil hai kahin aur dhadkan hai kahin
Saansien hai magar kyun zinda main nahin
Kyun main jaagoon, aur woh sapne bo raha hai
Kyun mera rab yun, aankhien khole so raha hai
Kyun main jaagoon
I hope I will be able to keep my promises...the one I made to you of not crying for you and finding you inside me and the one I made to our friends to be careful.
On a separate note, I suddenly remembered that stranger I told you about. He also had asked me to live for the sake of those who love me. He would be pleased to know I finally listened to him. Its so strange, how much a stranger can influence us. He might not even remember me yet he was the one who brought me out of my zombie state.
Armaan I am scared. Not about how I will survive in a complete new city!! I can manage that. I have done that at the tender age of 8, I can do that again. I am scared that in that crowded, noisy city where everyone is running a rat race will I forget you? Will I lose you when I am not connected to you with anything but memories? Will our time spent together be lost when I can't visit our place whenever I want to? I don't want to lose you Armaan. I have already lost you in reality. I can't lose you in my memories as well. Please stay with me until I am strong enough to be alone.
Forever and Always,
Yours Geet
A new dawn was approaching fast. Geet was afraid in the new city with new friends she might part with the memories of past. She was apprehensive yet excited. Mumbai was calling her and she was a step away...
