Veteran Tamil film producer K Rajan passed away at the age of 85 after an alleged suicide incident near Chennai’s Adyar Bridge on Sunday, May 17. The news has left several members of the Tamil film industry shocked, with actors and filmmakers expressing grief over his demise.
According to reports, Rajan allegedly jumped from the bridge into the river. Fire and rescue officials later recovered his body and shifted it to a hospital for further procedures. Police have now launched an investigation into the incident, while the exact circumstances behind the tragedy are yet to be officially confirmed.
K Rajan remained a well known figure in Tamil cinema for decades through his work as both a producer and actor. Over the years, he became recognised for his outspoken personality and active involvement in industry related discussions.
Soon after news of his death surfaced online, actor and politician Khushbu Sundar shared a heartfelt note mourning his passing. Reacting on X, formerly Twitter, she wrote, “Terrible news. Deeply shocked to hear about the demise of our beloved member of film fraternity, producer K.Rajan Sir.”
She further added, “He passing away by suicide is extremely saddening. Very respectful person and a man who never hesitated to call a spade a spade. Very very upsetting. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanthi.”
K Rajan began his career in Tamil cinema as a producer with the film Brammacharigal. He later worked on several projects including Doubles and Aval Paavam. Apart from film production, he also appeared in acting roles across multiple Tamil films over the years.
Some of his notable acting appearances included Michael Raj, Sonthakkaran, Veettoda Maapillai, Paambu Sattai, Ajith Kumar starrer Thunivu and Selvaraghavan’s Bakasuran.
He is survived by his son Prabhukanth, who initially entered the industry as an actor before later moving into direction. Prabhukanth is known for directing RJ Balaji’s political satire LKG.
