Raise, hell!

The team of Left Right Left has got huge increments. So what if they had to threaten to quit in order to get it?

RANJIB MAZUMDER

With the second season of Left Right Left launched after the cricket World Cup, there were signs of discontent among the younger lot. Already the show had lost one star Shveta Salve. The status of the other star, Rajeev Khandelwal, was uncertain. Rajeev, the star attraction of the show is contemplating leaving the show. The younger lot took advantage of the situation and pitched for increments. They are reported have threatened to leave the show if they were denied the raise. Fearing that the storyline may go for a toss with a bunch of actors leaving the show, producers Tony and Deeya Singh succumbed to their demand. The cadet team, Arjun Bijlani aka Alekh, Kunal Kapoor aka Yudi, Harshad Chopra aka Ali, Vikas Manaktala aka Huda, Priyanka Bassi aka Naina are now smiling with their increment.
Says a source in the production house, "When the serial started, the newcomers did not have a clue about the kind of payment stars get. Moreover, it was a big break for them, so they did the show without any question. Only Rajeev gets the star payment here. But this is the
only show which has a budget equal to any Star primetime show. Moreover, the show is a success story and is making huge profits. Naturally, the actors thought that they had been cheated. So, they got together and asked for a big increment. Now they've all got increments of almost 100-140 per cent each. Among the cadets, only Gazal Rai aka Pooja's increment is yet to be finalised."
Vikas Manaktala aka Huda one of the cadets in the show was candid when asked about the raise in their payment. "I do not want to talk about the monetary increment. But whatever it is, it's not at all a huge sum of money. When the show started we were clueless about the system. So, we accepted whatever was given to us."

Some of them feel that with the success of the show and increment is called for. Manaktala continues, "The entire cadet team is working exclusively with the show. We have been getting a lot of offers outside, where people are offering us great money. Still, we have turned them down. So, we got together and asked the producer to address our grievances. I don't think it was an issue. Anyway our increment is very less compared to what's given on other shows."

TV stars speak about their Papa the great

'One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters'. On Father's day, we asked some of our T.V. stars about their fathers.

Priyanka Bassi
"My father is among the best people in this world. We share a very cordial relationship and I respect him a lot. However, I am not that open with him and cannot express myself fully in front of him, but we still are good friends. My father is very calm and composed. He is also focused and I have all these qualities. He has a very bad temper and cannot stand liars, just like me. I think sometimes you have to change according to the circumstances and I would like to change this quality of mine.

Gaurav Chopra
By: The Life@Work Team | June 15, 2007

The kind of work stress I'm under, I need a long list of stress busters just to stay afloat. My number one stress buster is music. I plan the tempo of my music according to the mood of the scene scheduled to be shot.

Besides relieving pressure, it also sets me up for the shot. Over the years, I've realised that energy conservation goes a long way in relieving stress and maintaining focus.

I carry my alarm clock to the set, and take 15 minute power naps in-between shots. This energises me for the next four hours.

My list of stress busters also includes watching DVDs on my laptop, chatting on the phone and avoiding coffee.

Aamna is a very Special Person

"Aamna Shareef? Please, write so much about the two of us that finally she gets fed up and says 'Ok, I'll marry Rajeev'." Long designated the Most Romantic Looker on TV, Rajeev Khandelwal has put 'Kahin Toh Hoga' firmly behind him and with 'Left Right Left', hopes his life is taking the 'right' direction towards serials, films and that special someone

You took a long hiatus before shooting for the second season of your SAB serial, 'Left Right Left'. What did you do in this period?

I rediscovered myself. I am in love with myself all over again. I met a lot of people. I saw films. I bought a nice, new camping car and took it for a solo trip to Jim Corbett National Park, where I stayed in the wild. I also participated in a car rally with 40 other cars.

But didn't dropping out of the rat race make you insecure? Other actors are doing multiple serials.

I don't get fidgety or restless during my breaks. I don't look at other people and think that they are earning mega bucks and so should I. I want to do one thing and move on to another. Bungee jumping – done! Leaving 'Kahin to Hoga' – done! Doing a show on SAB – done! Going for a car rally – done! I am on a high.

You have stolen girls' hearts across the country. Who has stolen your heart?

Nobody. I can still hear it, it's safe out here. Also, I haven't stolen any hearts; they have been thrown at me. People have been overly kind to me.

There have been speculations about Aamna Shareef and you being a couple. Do you think there can be any smoke without fire?

Aamna is a very special person to me just the way Ekta (Kapoor) is because I did my first show with both of them. The chemistry between our characters Sujal and Kashish rocked the nation. Aamna has been there for me always. She is more than special to me and I will always stand up for her.

Abhishek and Aishwarya made similar vague statements. But then they ended up getting married! So media speculations are not always off the mark.

The media got Abhishek and Aishwarya married. I hope they also get Aamna and me married. I would love to marry Aamna Shareef. Please, write so much about the two of us that finally she gets fed up and says 'Ok I'll marry Rajeev' just like Abhishek and Aishwarya probably did.

So it's a complete green signal from your side?

She is a pretty woman. Since I don't have any woman in my life why would I refuse an Aamna Shareef?

And why would she refuse a Rajeev Khandelwal in that case?

She knows me very well and she knows my weak points too.

And those weaknesses are...

Well I am very restless in my life. Also, I am difficult person to handle though I am an exceedingly simple man.

We heard you have received several film offers.

I would be lying if I say that I am not considering films, every actor does. But I am very practical. I have read scripts but they look like they should be my second, third and fourth films. My first film is on its way -- I am still waiting for it.

But there was some news that you and Aamna have signed a film together.

Well…

What kind of film you would like to be launched with?

I'd like to do a film which has a long shelf value; maybe a film like, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, QSQT, Dil, Betaab. I would love to do a passionate love story. Actually, it could be of any genre, but it should be memorable, something you can watch even 10 years after its release. (Bollywood News Service)

Pagaar badhaa, warna...!

Gone are the days when working professionals hesitated to enter their boss's cabin and demand a raise. Our mini poll revealed that 73% of those questioned, didn't feel uncomfortable asking for a hike, because they felt they deserved it. But, there are individuals like TV actor Priyanka Bassi, who feel awkward discussing money.

Left Right Left actor Priyanka Bassi
The pay-me-or-I-quit raise

Who? The cast of Left Right Left

Raise strategy: With Shveta Salve leaving, and the other star, Rajeev Khandelwal planning to follow, the younger lot of actors, Arjun Bijlani, Kunal Kapoor, Harshad Chopra, Vikas Manaktala and Priyanka Bassi got together and asked producers Deeya and Toni Singh, for a raise. After allegedly threatening to quit the show, they received increments of 100% to 140% each.

HR head says: Holding an employer to ransom, is not the right way to do it; it amounts to opportunity extortion. But, you do have the right to quit and join an organisation that can match your pay expectations.

Hollywood cameo levers Gaurav Chopraa's career

Gaurav Chopraa, who acted in his first Hollywood film Blood Diamond, is getting a lot of good offers despite doing only two scenes in the film.

Gaurav recently entered Left Right Left after it took a season's break. He is playing a music teacher in the serial. That apart, he is doing a cameo in a new show called Four. "I am playing the character of Mr. Perfect, who is very rich and good looking. We have also shot the song Sajanji ghar aaye, which was picturised on Salman Khan, for this show. I hope people will like that as well."

Accepting that life has changed after Blood Diamond, Gaurav says, "Yes, I am getting a lot of respect after the movie. This was a big role, even though the full footage was not shown in the film. But if a movie is so good and popular, your performance gets noticed even if you have small role."

Chopra continues, "Yesterday (June 15), I went for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom's premiere and there Abhishek Bachchan told me ' I am proud of you and liked your work in the film.' He was very excited after watching me and I was surprised that the whole media was behind him but he made way and came to me. At least for five minutes we were holding each other's hands and chatting nicely. Then, after the film got over, I got a chance to return the compliment. I told him that I too liked his role in this film. Further, other stars and directors also came and praised my performance. I am very thankful to God for it."

Did the fact that it was a Hollywood film make all the difference?

"Well, the main thing is the film should be good, whether it is a Bollywood or Hollywood film. If this movie had not done well, I don't think I would have been getting the same number of offers. Thankfully things have worked out well for me," an ecstatic Gaurav signs off.

The team of Left Right Left is on cloud nine as the new season has got huge increments for the whole team. With the show's big star Shveta Salve already out and the other bigger star, Rajeev Khandelwal's exit nearby the producers couldn't antagonise the younger actors and therefore when they asked for a raise and threatened that they would quit otherwise, the producers Tony and Deeya Singh gave in. The cadets i.e., Arjun Bijlani aka Alekh, Kunal Kapoor aka Yudi, Harshad Chopra aka Ali, Vikas Manaktala aka Huda, Priyanka Bassi aka Naina are grinning from ear to ear.

Vikas admitted that "It feels good to have a raise. But I wouldn't like to reveal the sum in print." Don't worry we got all the figures. Arjun Bilani who used to get Rs 5,000 now takes home Rs12,000 per day. Kunal Kapoor jumped from Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000, ditto for Harshad Chopra. Among girls Priyanaka Bassi aka Naina got a bigger share from Rs 8,000 to Rs 17,000 while Vikas Manakatala got the biggest raise of them all from Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000 per day. These actors were newcomers when the serial started so they didn't know what payment to expect but now after a year on the show they are finally getting their due.

Rajeev Khandelwal is all set to play his favourite sport, badminton, with none other than national champion Amod Tilak today, at the Goregoan Sports Complex. Incidentally, Rajeev has always been into sports and also represented his college in diving. After shifting from Delhi to Mumbai, Rajeev has been regularly playing squash, tennis and badminton.

Rajeev Khandelwal
Rajeev says, "Yes, I will be playing today depending on Amod's time schedule. I have known him for a long time. He is obviously the best in the business and has also won national and international matches. I know I play badminton very well, but he is the best. It will be a great learning process as well and I will definitely get to learn a trick or two from Amod."

Rajeev further says, "I have always been very fond of sports and thankfully I have managed to still maintain that childlike passion whenever I am playing. I play badminton, squash and tennis at the Goregoan Sports Complex, whenever I am free for a few hours at a stretch. Shabbir Aluwalia plays against me, as he is also fond of these sports. I have also been a gymnast all my life and I used to be in diving champion in my college days. My father is in the army because of which I had access to all the clubs. That gave me all the time and means to learn sports in my childhood."

"I have also been very passionate about horse riding and have just joined Jeetu Varma's stud farm and I am enjoying it," adds Rajeev.

I know I play badminton very well, but he is the best. It will be a great learning process as well and I will definitely get to learn a trick or two from Amod
