PART FOUR
Heer pushed the sheet away from her and set simply to filing her pink nails.
Prem stared at her in incredulity. She pretended not to notice, yet, she couldn't help but cast tiny glances towards him as he went back to working on the graph that they were supposed to be creating together. It wasn't that she did not want to help- it was more the fear that she would appear unintelligent and useless in front of him that stopped her from lending him a hand. The outer shell that she showed to the world may seem strong, yet within it dwelled only insecurities and weakness.
'What do you think?' a voice pierced through the air, disturbing her train on thoughts.
He stared at her holding the graph up to her face.
She waved her hand in front of her face in frustration, 'Urgh, you don't need to put it right up to my face!' she uttered rudely.
'Well SOR-RY!!' he answered back. 'Well, do not think you are going to take credit for MY work' he thought, throwing unpleasant glances towards her. He still hadn't forgotten her snide remark about statistics.
Before the end of class, Mr. Patel set everyone homework, which had Heer sighing in frustration and Prem lighting up with joy. When the lesson finished, Mr. Patel collected the graphs and signified everyone to leave.
Prem could not get out of there fast enough.
'Thanks for the most boring sixty minutes of my life!' Heer derided as he carefully placed his stationary in his backpack.
'Your welcome' he shot back.
He gathered his books with difficulty and made his way out of the class. She was about to do the same, meeting up with Shifali and Asma, and scurrying away when Mr. Patel's words stopped her in her tracks. 'Can I have a word with you please Heer?' he said, although it was not really a question.
'Ummm...We'll talk to you later Heer' said Shifali, and her and Asma left Heer alone to talk to Mr. Patel, something which she dreaded.
Mr. Patel spoke, 'Heer- I have been noticing your lack of attendance in class and this has seriously been affecting your grades.'
She gulped, fiddling with her fingers and looking down at her hands, unable to meet his eyes.
'I don't want to have to contact your parents, but I don't see any other option...' he continued.
'Sir, please don't tell my parents, I'll try to bring my grades up. Please, I promise I will work harder,' Heer pleaded.
'I thought I should tell you that there is a good reason why I paired you up with Prem today. I feel that Prem's influence could really give you that push into raising your marks. Maybe you should meet up with Prem every now and then for tutoring sessions- In my opinion, it could really help you.'
'What? No...I mean...I don't think that's necessary' said Heer. No way was she going to bear spending any more time with that Prem Juneja.
'Well, think it over- the decision is up to you. But I still feel the need to call your parents' he stated.
'But...' she started, but it was of no use.
'That's all- you can go now Heer' he said before taking a seat behind his desk and looking through the papers that lay scattered all over it. There was nothing more she could say or do. She felt as small as an ant- an ant that had just been stomped on. Her biggest fear was coming true.
Being proved as a failure in front her family and causing them embarrassment was far from what she wanted. She was Heer Mann, nearly everyone wanted to be like her. Thus, at that very moment she certainly did not want to be Heer Mann. In fact, she would give anything to be anyone else in the world. She turned and made her way out of the classroom, almost colliding into a warm, sturdy figure, as her healed shoes failed to find any grip on the polished floor.
He caught her smoothly, steadying her up as. She slowly raised her eyes to see Prem Juneja's deep brown eyes gazing back at her through his chunky glasses. 'Watch where you're going!!' she muttered, even though it was she who stumbled into him. Pushing him back, she rushed out of the door, leaving him to watch her fading figure.
'Prem, you again?' asked Mr. Patel, noticing Prem at the door of the classroom.
This brought Prem back to consciousness, and he swiftly turned his head to look at Mr. Patel. 'Actually I forgot my Physics book...' replied Prem, rushing over to his desk and grabbing his Physics guide.
'Okay' laughed Mr. Patel.
'See you tomorrow Sir' he said politely before leaving.
Prem wandered around the corridor oblivious to everything else around him. He hadn't failed to notice the tears that brimmed at the corners of her eyes. Yes, he had heard everything Mr. Patel had said to her. He had only gone back to get his book, he didn't mean to eavesdrop- it just happened. Now for some reason everything seemed trivial in comparison to her pain.
Why did he feel that there was more to her that met the eye- that deep inside there was a Heer that was concealed from the world. The desperation is her voice echoed through his ears and the image of her dejected face would not escape his mind. Why did her pain seem to reach his heart?
He always seemed to have the answers to everything- so then why didn't he have the answer to this question?
