TV REVIEW: Kisses and tears mark Jhalak 3

The reality show has started off on an 'oh-so-controversial' note
These days, controversies (read fights and love affairs) on reality TV have become the sure shot mantra to high TRPs (a la Bigg Boss 2 style). And so when Sony launched the third season of its popular dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, the makers made sure that there was enough and more of such controversies.

The show started with the ex Jhalak winners Mona Singh (season 1 winner) and Prachi Desai (season 2 winner) putting up a fun performance. And then they introduced the 12 contestant jodis. Unlike many other celebrity reality shows where in the first season the best contestants seems to have been exhausted, in Jhalak… the contestants get better and better with every season.

If Mona and Mahesh were fun in the first season, this season we have Ram Kapoor, Hard Kaur, Mohinder Amarnath, Anand Raj Anand and many many more who are extremely energetic, peppy and a LOT of fun.

Moving on, the hosts Shweta Tiwari and Shiv Pandit are so unlike each other that they actually complement each other well. Funny? But true! Shweta is talkative, funny, energetic, vivacious and SEXY. Everything that Shiv is not. But yet, they do a good job of putting the show together.

The judges on the other hand are quite similar. For one they are all WOMEN! Judge number one, Saroj Khan is well…Saroj Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant (yeah she too is there) will become a Saroj Khan very soon (just give her a couple of years) and Juhi Chawla is too cute to be a judge. And we love them. Saroj Khan's whistles, Juhi's inability to say anything bad to any contestant is somewhat comforting.

As for the contestants, we have not seen such an exciting lot on a single show together. Everybody is too energetic, too cute or way too hot. For example Hard Kaur can't stop jumping around. She also calls herself 'sharm proof'. Mohinder Amarnath on the other hand is too cute to be true. And so is Bhaichung Bhutia and Ram Kapoor. As for the hot people, there's Gauhar Khan and Karan Grover. Need we say more?

Now moving on to the controversial part...

Well, this season, the Jhalak makers to make controversy making simpler have introduced a new aspect to the show – the Jhalak House, a place where all the contestants will practice on camera. There are some rules too. For example, the microphone has to be on all the time etc etc. Did this remind you of some show? We thought so…

The first controversy was a fight ending up in tears. Gauhar Khan the supermodel and her choreographer Hanif Hilal (who had also been hanging around with Ms Pooja Bedi for some time) started off with a brilliant performance and ended up crying. Well, this is how it went…

Right after their performance, Gauhar was asked whether she had said bad things about her choreographer. She denied. But then she forgot all about the Jhalak House camera, which brought out the ugly truth about Gauhar, who had been bitching about Hanif behind his back. Hmmm…The judges did not like it much. Juhi when asked to say something about the incident, turned poetic. And Gauhar cried. Hanif looked crestfallen and rather dejected. Pooja Bedi sat in the audience.

Now if you have fights, there has to be an antithesis to fights as well. So how about a blossoming romance? Parul Chauhan and choreographer Deepak delivered a sizzling performance in which Parul kissed Deepak twice. Not Bad! And when they went backstage and were asked about those twin affectionate pecks, Deepak soon clarified that he wasn't dating Parul. When asked why he had to clarify, he admitted that he has been getting too many mobile messages regarding the same.

So there you have it! Love and Hate, Kisses and Blows – and all the required masala on a single show!

Jhalak Dikhla Jaa Season 3 has been interesting in the opening episodes. Now it remains to be seen whether all this 'controversy' adds some fun to the show or just ends up mucking it all.

Parul Chauhan: Dance is like a puja

Parul Chauhan did a few shows here and there before she became a household name with her role as Ragini in Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai. The actress, who has no formal training in dance, will now be seen testing her moves on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

We caught up with Parul for a rapid round of questions regarding dance and music.

Previous dance experience: I do not have any experience performing, not even at school or college level. I have not taken any kind of training.

Your take on dance: Dance is like a puja for me. I still remember the first time I performed on a stage when I was kid. I performed on the song Akshiyan Milaoon Kabhi Churaoon which was featured on Madhuri Dixit. I was quite nervous. Then slowly slowly I gained confidence doing stage shows and performances.

Your favourite dance: For now it is Indian as I have not learnt any other kind of dance form. I am just getting to know about salsa, jazz ,Bollywood and others. I will slowly get a grip over them and only then will I be able to say which form is the best.

The person you think will win: Actually speaking, all 11 contestants are better than me. They did a good job in the first episode, I could not make out any flaws in their performances. It would be very difficult for me to take a single name.

Your favourite judge: All three of them are so sweet. I am the youngest contestant on the show and during the technical rehearsals, when we did our shoot, I was jumpy as I had to rush to my other shoot. It was so nice of them to allow me to go early.

Quotable quote from a judge that has lingered: It has to be Vaibhavi's reaction when unhone meri apne hathon se nazar utari aur kaha ke you performed like Apsara. It was an emotional moment for me.

Quotable quote from another contestant that has lingered: All of them told me that my expressions were very cute. They said that when I rehearse, my face is expressionless but when I perform, I give out the perfect expressions.

Now playing on your iPod/music system: From Jai Veeru, the song Tenu Leke Jayenge, Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gayi from Ghajni and Kal Ho Na Ho's title track, which is my all-time favourite.

Shilpa Shukla: Hard Kaur will win

AFTER proving herself as the arrogant Bindiya in Chak De! India, Shilpa Shukla is out to garner more fame and fortune as she tries to win the judges and audiences with her dance steps on Sony Television's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

Going by her first performance, she is doing it with ease. Shilpa was appreciated with thunderous applause from the show's judges actor Juhi Chawla and choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant after her first routine on Jhalak last week. Just time, we thought, for a quick tte tte with her.
Previous dance experience: I have had no experience as such. When I was a kid, I learnt Odissi for two years. Much later, I had performances at our society functions – they were pretty much contemporary dancing at parties.

Your take on dance: Dance is everything! It is an ex-pression from the soul. I truly believe that the way you dance is the complete reflection of your soul. Dance is not just swirling and moving your body, it is a discipline, regardless of what form.

Your favourite dance: It has to be contemporary. People are not very familiar with it, and it doesn't follow any kind of style. It is very different and I love it. I also believe this dance form is close to the soul.

The person whom you think will win: I think Hard Kaur. She is so energetic and enthusiastic when it comes to dancing. There is a combination of humour and entertainment in the way she expresses herself. She has that X-Factor in her which will take her to new heights. She is a very interesting and sweet girl.

Your favourite judge: It has to be Vaibhavi Merchant. Her way of explaining things just pumps you up. She knows how to build your confidence and does it so well. Before the show started, she was perhaps the one I was scared of the most. Now, she is my favourite.

Quotable quote from a judge that has lingered: It was after my first performance to the song, Kaise main tumse nain milaoon sajna, from Om Shanti Om. Vaibhavi said, "You danced like a queen."

Even Juhi praised my performance. That really felt good and was very encouraging for me.

Now playing on your iPod: It's Masakali (composed by Oscar-winner A R Rahman and sung by Mohit Chauhan) from Delhi-6. It is forever playing on my iPod. It is so wonderful and I relate to each and every word of the song. Given a chance, I would like to dance to it.

Parul Chauhan faints on JDJ

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa has been on air for just a week. But the pressure of working through the day and practicing through the night is already getting to everyone.

PARUL Chauhan, popularly known as Ragini of Bidaai (Star Plus, Mon-Fri at 9pm), fainted twice on the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (Sony, Fri-Sat at 9pm). Once before her performance and once while she was performing.
Doctors had to be called in as she took time to regain consciousness.

Parul puts her ill health down to her strenuous schedule, "It is becoming very hectic for me to manage my shoots and rehearsals. My Bidaai set is at Mira Road (a far-flung suburb in Northwestern Mumbai). It takes me over an hour travelling to and fro. I have been working all day and night. I developed a fever from the stress. I fainted at rehearsals, and they had to call the doctors. The dance step needed me to jump. But I fell down. Everyone came running, someone gave me juice and medicines."
After the incident, Parul says that her production houses are taking extra precautions with her: "Both the production houses are taking good care of me. They do not call me for a shot immediately and tell me to rest in my van. I have also started taking positive steps such as calming myself down and telling myself that I should not be hyper."

Parul was performing on the song, Choli ke peeche kya hai (filmed on Madhuri Dixit in Khalnayak), when she fainted. When she failed to come to, actor and fellow contestant Ram Kapoor had to carry her to the green room. After medical help, Parul got better.

The first elimination on Jhalak will take place this week. A source talks about the episode, saying, "The shooting for the show stopped for an hour after Parul fainted. Hard Kaur was the best performer this week, too. Gauhar's (Khan) choreographer Hanif (Hilal) had a bad time because they took help from an outside choreographer. The judges did not approve. The performed to the song Kajra re (filmed on Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan in Bunty Aur Babli)."

Friday's show will see only women perform on the show. The men perform on Saturday, March 7.

    A hard day's night

Karan Singh Grover, who is KG to his wife Shraddha Nigam, is having a hard time shuttling between the sets of his serial Dill Mill Gayye and the rehearsals for the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.

Karan reveals breathlessly,"I shoot all day long and reach home at 11 in the night. I meet Shraddha for 10-15 minutes and then leave for rehearsals that go on for three- four hours. I come back late and catch sleep for 3-4 hours, meet Shraddha for 10 minutes in the morning and rush back for shooting"

And does he practice dancing at home with Shraddha?"I meet her either too late or too early in the morning and she is half asleep then. Once i did try and waltz with her after i returned from my rehearsals but she was too sleepy so we did not manage to dance"

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa: Week 2 review

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's season 4 has only just begun but the dance moves and drama of the new contestants are already getting audiences hooked. This week's episode presented only the female contestants burning up the dance floor.

FRIDAY night saw the six women being divided into two groups. One group had to perform on dance guru Saroj Khan's originally-choreographed tracks and the other three had to dance to Vaibhavi Merchant's. We take a look at the good, the bad and the wobbly on this week's show.

    Hard Kaur and Savio
Just like her first performance, Hard Kaur and choreographer Savio rocked the dance floor last night with an awesome routine on the song White White Face, originally choreographed by Vaibhavi, in Tashan. Although the judges felt that the Punjabi kudi's energy levels were lower as compared to her first performance, we really loved her dancing. Despite the flaws, the duo still garnered 27 points, the highest marks amongst the six participants.
    Indya rating: 9/10

    Monica Bedi and Javed
Monica and Javed danced on one of the most popular numbers choreographed by Saroj Khan, Ek Do Teen from the movie Tejaab. While all the three judges praised them for their dancing, we found that the style was too similar to the original steps performed by Madhuri Dixit. This was clearly visible, especially since both performers were dressed in the exact way of the original song. Even so, Monica did a good job and her efforts could not be ignored. The judges gave them 22 points.
    Indya rating: 7.5/10

    Shilpa Shukla and Nishant
The duo amazed everyone last week with their outstanding performance but unfortunately the judges didn't feel that they were up to the mark this time. Shilpa and Nishant choose to be innovative with their dance steps and performed the style of Lavani on the western track Krazy Kiya Re (Vaibhavi) from Dhoom 2. They were heavily criticised by the three judges and this was reflected in their poor scores– 18points. However, we don't agree with the judges comments and feel that they should be applauded for their willingness to experiment.
    Indya rating: 8/10

    Parul Chauhan and Deepak
Popular Ragini was praised for her expressions and dance skills last week but Deepak was scolded for his "bad choreography" by Saroj Khan. The duo perhaps took it very seriously and worked very hard for yesterday's episode. They performed on Choli Ke Peechhe (Saroj Khan). Their hard work unfortunately resulted in Parul fainting mid-performance and the duo's performance got cut short. However, we feel that they did show some improvement. Despite their incomplete performance, they managed to get 22 points.
    Indya rating: 6.5/10

    Gauhar Khan and Hanif
Bad performance and issues between the two of them perhaps got in the way of them scoring well last week, but the duo won the hearts of the judges this week with their performance on the famous Bunty Aur Babli number Kajra Re (Vaibhavi). Gauhar and Hanif were praised for their chemistry and we feel that Gauhar completely resembled Aishwarya in every sense, be it dance or dressing. After getting the scores, it was revealed that the song was not choreographed by Hanif but another choreographer. As a result, both were badly scolded and choreographer Hanif was given a stern warning. Even with the controversy, the couple managed to score 24 points.
    Indya rating: 6/10

    Bhagyashree and Toby
The actresses' simple yet beautiful look definitely adds charm to their performances. They performed on Kaante Nahi Katt Te (Saroj Khan) from Mr. India and Bhagyashree's moves, and her look, were highly appreciated by Juhi. But Saroj Khan completely disliked their act and reprimanded it to a great extent, even though the other two judges praised them. We agree with Saroj Khan's opinion and feel that all the movements missed the beat. The judges gave them 24.
    Indya rating: 5/10

Next week, it is the male participants turn to perform to various Bollywood numbers.

    Juhi gets judgmental

Juhi Chawla makes her official TV debut with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa as a judge. Juhi Chawla will be judging the third edition of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Just before she took centerstage at the press conference, the channel showed an AV of Shah Rukh Khan commenting on his good friend taking on the role of a judge. Khan said that Juhi was incapable of judging anyone negatively and will give all the contestants 10 on 10. He even let out a 'secret'. He said that whenever anyone gave a bad performance all they had to do was look at her sadly and she would melt down and give full marks. "She's so softhearted that she can never be mean or rude to anyone," said SRK. Minutes later, when we met her for an interview, she flashed her trademark smile and said, "Shah Rukh has made me out to be some sort of a chocolate bar. But he's right to an extent. I can never bring myself to be mean or rude to anyone. I do realise how those contestants must feel for dancing on stage without any retakes. I'm an actress, so I know how it is when others comment or criticise your performance." Chawla says that she will, however, make the proceedings more interesting "because Sarojji (Khan) and Vaibhavi (Merchant) are there unki class lene ke liye." So has Juhi ever been shouted at by Saroj Khan while shooting for her dances? "Surprisingly, no. Sarojji has always been sweet to me. Maybe because though I wasn't a great dancer, I would put in all efforts to please her." Given her comic sense of timing, wouldn't judging a Comedy Circus or a Laughter Challenge been more up her alley? "May be yes, but I'd be looking more at the contestants' attitude, the judging would be from a humane point of view. Sarojji aur Vaibhavi hain na dance ki nitty-gritties dekhne ke liye." The actress also candidly mentioned how Sony sent her home a "mota (fat) cheque". So what else besides Vitamin M prompted her to take up Jhalak..? She smiles, "Offers had been coming for the last two years but the timing seemed to be right now." Ask her if she is prepared for all the scrutiny by the media on her role as a judge and she says, "Well, after all these years of being in the public eye, one gets used to the media glare. And do I have a choice given the way media has grown and its presence everywhere?" Her co-star with two left feet? Sunny Deol? She laughs, "Well I didn't say anything. You said it. But Sunny more than made up in the other aspects of acting." Her favourite dancers. "Hrithik moves like a dream and I'm fond of Shahid too."

Finally, how's her character of Minty, the wife of a hyper, successful film producer in Luck By Chance been accepted? "You know while shooting, when I saw the clothes I was wearing and my look in it, I thought, mar gaye, God knows what have I got myself into! But after the film released, the response has been overwhelming. Though I completely flipped over Rishiji's character - roly-poly, cute, adorable, wasn't he good?"
