Debina Bonnerjee, Unplugged!!

Debina Bonnerjee, Sita of NDTV Inagine's Ramayan in an exclusive chit-chat with Telly Buzz...

Debina Bonnerjee, NDTV Imagine's Sita opens up about her character and her future in an exclusive chit-chat with Telly Buzz…

How does it feel to play such a great character like Sita?
It's a wonderful feeling. I actually feel the pain and suffering of the character. Being a modern woman I also reject the theory that it's not possible to find a Sita these days. Playing the character for so long, I have began to understand where she comes from.

Did you watch the earlier season episodes to pick up pointers from Deepika Chikalia?
No I prefer to play the character as naturally as possible. And plus we all have knowledge of the great epic.

As a modern woman don't you feel that mytho's give the fairer sex a raw deal?
Scriptures tell us that these things were pre-ordained to finish off the evil and teach values to humanity. As a human all I can is that it's God's Leela.

The rumor mill is abuzz that you and Gurmeet are married; can you come clean?
All this hog wash started once when I was walking on the street with my make-up sindoor still on. At first we were affected by such talk, but now we have learnt to deal with it. Why should we hide something like this?

Besides Gurmeet who else are you friendly with on the set?
I get along quite well with Laxman as well. But of late I have really hit it off with Akhilesh Mishra, who plays Ravan. We chat away for hours. In fact it gets difficult to say those nasty things to him.

Are you afraid that you might meet the same fate as Arun Govil and Deepika Chikalia, who could not come out of their character images?
No, with technological advances, people's minds have opened up. They can now switch on and switch off. I am getting lots of south offers, so that justifies my confidence.

Will you do more western and glam roles later?
Once Ramayan is over I will decide whether to change the Sita image or bask in its glory. I would also love to take part in reality shows. Being a classical dancer, I will dance till I die.

What about Bollywood?
Yes, but it better not be like the current stupid films. When I as an audience cannot watch them, it makes no sense to work in them.

Will Mahabharata and Krishna eat into Ramayan's success?
No the stories are completely different. While Mahabharata is a political saga, our show is a family drama. And Krishna deals with the life and times of the great Hindu God. Also, what works in our favor is the first mover's advantage! Pulling in audiences is easy, but holding them will be a different ball game. We have had to do the hard work of breaking the conventional logic that mythos don't work, which is no mean task.

In closing any message to your fans?
Thank you for your love and affection. Please also appreciate that Ramayan is not like other dailies where if you fall sick, the creatives can introduce some other character or track. But out here, we have to work 30 days a month, as the story can't be changed. Hence we have to keeping shooting, irrespective of any problems that befalls us.

'There are still miles to go before I sleep' - Debina Bonnerjee

'There are still miles to go before I sleep' - Debina Bonnerjee

Debina Bonnerjee talks about being Sita in NDTV Imagine's Ramayan..

Debina Bonnerjee, better known as Sita of Ramayan on NDTV Imagine has a huge fan following. But very few people know that the actress is a trained Kathak dancer. And even fewer know that she was smitten by the glamor world seeing Sushmita Sen win the Miss Universe crown.

When offered the role, the actress was very excited to take up the challenge of playing a pivotal role of Sita Devi. Speaking about her auditions Debina says, "I had done many regional movies. Gurmeet acted with me in a Tamil serial, Mayavi. The CD of the serial was given to Sagar Arts and seeing that they selected us for the roles. "The funny part is that I did not even know that I was auditioning for the role of Sita", says she.

When asked how it feels to play a character that was popularly played by someone else before, Debina says, "It was very challenging for me to play this role. But as far as convincing my audience goes, I am sure that my audience will accept me, and Ramayan is the first mytho in this era. It was different and hence I took up the role. Not only that, people already have a fair knowledge about the epic, so it's easier to essay the role. The main thing here is to give our 100% to the role."

The young lass has participated in several beauty pageants in Kolkata. And with the support of her parents, she moved to Mumbai post her graduation and earned a Diploma in Public Relations from Bhavan's College. Annotating on her role further, she quips, "I never wanted to play any role in television dailies. In fact like I said, I did not have any idea that I was auditioning for the role of Sita Devi. When selected, I realized how important this role was. This epic has always been close to my heart and to bag the role of Sita Devi is like 'icing on the cake for me'.

As the actress signs out she leaves us with some food for thought saying, "There are still miles to go before I sleep."

NDTV Imagine's Ramayan will showcase the most moving part of this epic in its entire poetic and sentimental splendor with Sita's second exile and the birth of Luv & Kush...

The Sagar Arts epic, Ramayan on NDTV Imagine has brought a new trend on television, and after doing extremely well in this one year, there begins a new chapter now, with the entry of Luv and Kush!!.Ramayan-final.jpg" width="227" height="200" align="right" hspace="5" vspace="5" />

Here she gives birth to Luv and Kush and devotes herself completely to the upbringing of her children.

The star cast remains the same. "The only difference will be that now Gurmeet Chowdhury and Debina Bonnerjee will be joined by Rishabh Sharma and Perin Monish Malde who will be essaying the role of Luv and Kush respectively."

The role of Lakshman is played by Ankit Arora, Bharat by Vije Bhatia, Shatrughan by Lalit Negi , Hanuman by Vikram Sharma and Rishi Valmiki by Raman Khatri .

Gurmeet Chaudhary's cinema hopes knocked out..

Gurmeet Chaudhary's cinema hopes knocked out..

Gurmeet Chaudhary who was to feature in Subhash Ghai's film has now moved on, and does not mind doing something different..

Gurmeet Chaudhary's (Ram of NDTV Imagine's Ramayan) Hindi film hopes are dashed.

The guy had last year talked about the release of his football based Subhash Ghai film. But now it comes to knowledge that the project which had new faces besides him has been scrapped. When contacted, Gurmeet acted nonchalantly saying "I have forgotten about that project, as I had shot for it even before Ramayan had begun. Everything happens for the best. I have moved on since then, and will be looking for interesting projects once Ramayan ends".

He is also quite clear in his mind that he will not stick to only positive roles "I am an actor and will be open to doing all kinds of stuff. I agree that actors who were part of mythos earlier had an image issue, but over years the public has also grown up and now they have learnt to differentiate between actors and characters".

Asked to comment on the current track, Gurmeet says "Uttar Ramayan is as interesting as the first part. In a way this is a revelation as popular knowledge about this epic ends with slaying of Ravan". He laughingly talks about changes which people recommended so that he looks a more mature Lord Ram, given that he is quite a young guy. "I was asked to put on weight, but I said I don't need that as my acting is more then enough", states the actor.

Gurmeet also refused to speculate on his relationship with co star Debina Bonnerjee. It was first alleged that the couple are married but now it appears that they are not wed but are a couple for sure. "Initially I would react to such reports, but now I don't even bother. We are good friends, nothing more nothing less", he avers.

But according to our source, there is definitely something cooking between this couple who have known each other since a long time. They had met on Sahara Mr and Mrs Bollywood and had even worked in Mayavi' a 3D Tamil TV project.

Re-packaged Ramayan on Imagine from May 16th..

Re-packaged Ramayan on Imagine from May 16th..

Imagine to have a re-run of its popular flagship show, Ramayan...

Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee hit a 'green patch' playing Lord Ram and Sita in Imagine's popular flagship show, Ramayan.

Ramayan had a loyal set of viewers and was showered with good ratings till the very end.

Wondering why we are going down the memory lane? Well, that is because the channel has brought back the successful show on air again.

A little birdie tells us, "Come May 16th, Ramayan will be aired on Imagine at the early evening slot of 7-8 pm, from Monday to Thursday. The whole series has been repackaged by the channel to add freshness; there will be lot many new songs added in the new version of the show".

For the uninitiated, the channel was airing shows like Rakt Sambandh and Armanon ka Balidaan in the 7-8 pm slot. With both the shows getting axed, Ramayan will take the slot now. Guess this is a very good idea to bring in the loyal viewers of Ramayan back!!

Let the Magic be recreated..

Lead pair of the new Ramayan series talk on the essence of Dassera, celebrations and the eternal life of goodness

Saadia S Dhailey FilmCITY

With the spirit of Navratri in the air, Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee, look royalty personified in their Ram Sita attire as they gracefully alight from the chariot after a round around Filmcity and the neighbourhood with WSP.

Even as the track of their tele-series is yet to reach the major sequence where Ram finally vanquishes Ravan, both Debina and Gurmeet know the significant depth of celebrations of Dassera. Though Gurmeet is from Bihar, where the high notes of the festival are it's Ram Leelas and the burning of effigies of Ravan, Gurmeet's memories of Durga pujas, and Dassera celebrations outweigh any other festival.

A Bengali, Durga puja is by far the most important festival for Debina. Says the 24-year-old Bengali, with an impressive Hindi, "Back home, Durga puja is how Ganpati is here, and in fact larger. Durga puja is like a social festival, with beautiful pandals everywhere. Streets are a changed place; it's like a big fair. Not many bring the Goddess home, as it's not a small deity and only huge deities are put up." She goes on to share her privileged association with the festival, "Durga's idols are made in Kumortuli with the clay from the banks of Ganges, the road to which passes by our home. When the veiled deity is being taken from Kumortuli, we get the privilege to get a glimpse of her before it reaches the pandals. Around 200 people carry the deity from Kumortuli to the pandals on a huge bamboo stretcher. It's a feast to the eye and cannot be put in words." Her family also get to bid the final farewell as the deity is taken via the same way for immersion in the Ganges.

As the shooting of the show takes place in Baroda, the inseparable lead pair is every happy to be able to come home to Mumbai, and celebrate Dassera with their parents, who have specially come down for the occasion. Informs Gurmeet, "Though I had been shooting in Baroda, my parents had already come down to conduct Durga puja at home. I am glad to be to able to attend at least one day of the puja."

For the past two years, Debina's Dassera with her parents has been almost like a joyride she says, "I guess if you are a Bengali, you can smell the Durga puja celebrations. Earlier I only knew of the Durga puja hosted at Lokhandwala by Abhijeet, and at Santacruz by Rani Mukherjee's family. Then we decided to just drive around and discovered a lot more pandals. We happened to come across one just last year in Malad. It was a real nice experience, and we actually sat there for hours."

Considering, they are heading back to Baroda tonight, it definitely would be unfortunate to miss dandiya folk dance form in its heartland, both agree. Says Gurmeet, "We are definitely looking forward to playing dandiya in Baroda. It's the ultimate."

For now, however, they are prepared to spend their festive time shooting and don't mind it a bit. "After all we are almost living the life of Ram and Sita," says Debina of being a part of the centuries old epic, whose underlying principles are even relevant today. Ma Durga's triumph over the demon king Mahishasur, and Lord Ram's victory over Ravan give hope that in this kalyug as well, good will fade the malevolence. This hope also lights in the hearts of Ram Gurmeet and Sita Debina.

If Gurmeet had had the fortune of descending as Lord Ram in this time, he would want to put an end to terrorism that is gripping the globe. "My dad's in the army and I have seen terrorism from close quarters. Terrorists are claiming innocents lives with their evil acts. Bomb blasts are destroying families taking there loved ones away. Tomorrow it could be my loved ones or me. Ram's birth was destined to finish Ravan. For me, today, this would be my mission. Ravan was the Rakshash then, terrorism is the Rakshash now, and it has to end." Can we hear someone say ?Tathaastu??
