The team of Kantara: Chapter 1 has cancelled their Chennai promotional event after a deadly stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. At least 40 people died during the rally addressed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, shocking the nation.
Actor Gulshan Devaiah shared an official statement on Instagram, saying, “In view of the recent unfortunate incident, we have decided to cancel our Kantara: Chapter 1 promotional event scheduled in Chennai tomorrow. We believe this is a time for reflection and solidarity with those affected. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families impacted. We are grateful for your understanding and support, and we look forward to meeting our audience in Tamil Nadu at a more appropriate time.”
In the caption, he added, “Due to the recent unfortunate incident, we are cancelling the #KantaraChapter1 promotional event in Chennai tomorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to meeting our audience in Tamil Nadu at a more appropriate time.”

This is not the first time Vijay’s rallies have raised safety concerns. Six deaths were reported during the first meeting of his political party in October last year. Despite police-imposed restrictions on convoy size and venue adjustments, large crowds have repeatedly overwhelmed local arrangements.
Kantara: Chapter 1, produced by Hombale Films, is set to release on 2 October, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra. Directed by Rishab Shetty, the film stars Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, Jayaram, and Rakesh Poojari in key roles. The screenplay is co-written by Rishab Shetty, Anirudh Mahesh, and Shanil Guru, with music composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, who also scored the original film.
The makers’ decision to cancel the Chennai event shows sensitivity to the tragedy, as they postpone celebrations in solidarity with the affected families.
