Marjaawaan Second Weekend Business

Marjaawaan saw a big drop in business in the second week as it collected just 4.50 crore nett taking its ten day total 42 crore nett. The film did not do well in metros in week one so the drop there was always likely but it had a similar drop in mass markets as it lost single screens to Pagalpanti

The film was showing 80% plus drops in places like Rajasthan, CI and Maharashtra and it had to maintain better in these markets. The film also did not grow much on Saturday but the Sunday growth was solid. The 50 crore nett mark looks a tough target now with this drop and it looks a 46-48 crore nett finish for the film depending on what sort of collections come next week. The collections of Marjaawaan till date are as follows.

Even with the drop it will finish between 45-50 crore which should be enough to emerge an average. Still not sure whether it will improve market value for Sid as low budget is the only reason this film has emerged a success. This genre has grown a lot in potential and should have got bigger number.

To put into perspective, R. Rajkumar, a film in similar zone with Shahid Kapoor in lead which was released six years ago made 65 crore which will be 15-20 crore more than Marjaavan.

The movie was sold to one distributor across the country for around 20 something crores. So given the actual cost of distributions and what not they are already in profit. And this is not just something that Sid fans or the producers are saying. Practically every trade analyst out there has called it a hit already.

As for Sid’s market value, I think he’s gained some footing with the mass market and single screens. Apparently the footfalls at single screens were really good but those ticket prices are lower. The same footfalls at multiplexes would have given it a double digit opening and a much bigger first weekend. But Sid still has a long way to go specially with Multiplex audiences. Still, I’m sure he’ll work with Milap again in this genre and probably will build a good base for himself with single screens.


I think the one that will reap the most benefits from this is Milap Zaveri. He’s already being hailed as a good mass single screen director who knows his audience well. His next Satyamev Jayate is already getting good buzz because of his name.
