Box Ofice - Gunday' being pitched as a 100 crore affair

Comments
Posted on February 13th, 2014 in Movies, News

gundaytitlesong 218x300 Box Ofice Gunday being pitched as a 100 crore affairThe stage has been set, red carpet rolled out and trumpets ready to be blown. Gunday' is arriving amidst good buzz and hype which means if the content is good, sky is the limit for this Aditya Chopra production. The promo has clearly been one of the most liked on this side of the year, the songs are popular too, the jodi' of Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor is looking good, Priyanka Chopra is adding a huge weight to the affairs while Irrfan Khan's presence is only making the film look better. With the entire packaging right, Ali Abbas Zafar has a job in hand which is simple - Deliver a good film'!

With good excitement amongst the audience, the film should open quite well at the box office, both at the multiplexes and the single screens. Releasing at a good screen count, an average opening around the 60% mark is on the cards with mass belt multiplexes and single screens expected to cross the 80% mark, which should be good enough to result in a very healthy total. Unless the film is a letdown (which doesn't seem to be the case), the weekend should only gain further momentum, which anything in the upwards of 40 crore is a good possibility.

The film is already being looked at as a 100 crore success in the offering and with the advantage of solo release as well as Valentine's Day occasion, Gunday' has in it to score well. As things stand today, this could well be the first bonafide hit of 2014.

Review:

Set in the 1970s against the backdrop of Bangladesh Liberation War when an independent Bangladesh was formed, the film tracks the life of Bikram and Bala (Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor), two orphans who are caught up in the chaos. Inseparable since childhood, the two friends grow up to be coal bandits after shifting base to Kolkata. Their solidarity and comradeship is well known all over Kolkata. The two best friends soon become the most influential goons in the city. They fall in love with a cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra). ACP Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) sets out to put an end to their black market business. How the Bikram and Bala's friendship survives through all these hurdles forms the rest of the plot.

YashRajFilms

Indestructible friendship, chemistry, a hint of romance, a lot of action and high-on-emotion sequences - 'Gunday' has it all in good amounts. The director Ali Abbas Zafar has come a long way since his last film 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan'. 'Gunday' is far better in terms of editing, cinematography and depth. It is fast paced, power packed and fierce. The characters are brilliantly etched and Ranveer and Arjun's bromance is something that the men will look up to in the coming years. Even with its highs and lows in the plotline, never does the film lose its momentum. When Irrfan's track merges with that if Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, the film gradually progresses into an investigative flick. The climax is bound to leave you speechless. The cinematographer Aseem Mishra deserves a special mention for capturing each and every setting brilliantly.

Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor's chemistry is the USP of the film. The two infuse undying energy into every frame they appear in. Both characters completely different from each and yet so similar, Bikram and Bala are the epitome of bromance. They're hilariously amusing and fierce with equal finesse. Ranveer is setting the bar higher up with each film and Arjun Kapoor has done exceedingly well, considering it is just his second film. Watch out for these two performers in the future. Priyanka Chopra looks hot as ever but her character's styling looks awfully out of place. While the rest of the characters look every part of the 1970s, Priyanka Chopra looks straight out of a high-on-glamour 2014 flick. Needless to say, Irrfan Khan delivers a stunning performance as the cunning cop.

Sohail Sen's music is already hogging the charts. All the tracks are high on energy and enjoyable. If you're not hooked on to 'Tune Maari Entriyaan' yet, wait till you walk out of the theatre. 'Jiya' and 'Jaan-e-Ishqa' too, are wonderfully composed.

Verdict: Ranveer and Arjun Kapoor's bromance is one of the best you would have ever seen on celluloid. There is no way you should miss out on 'Gunday'.

5 Reasons Why It Will Be A Crime To Not Watch Gunday

Gunday Movie Poster

Films, Bollywood for me has always been about excitement and being a filmy buff I am, it is the emotional food I primarily thrive on. It might be a controversial statement to make but I stand by idea that commercial cinema is utter crass these days. However, it seems Ali Abbas Zafar is going to give film lovers a wonderful gift this Valentine's Day packaged in the delightful wrap with Gunday. For a film lover, a rightly formulated film is a rarity and finding a refreshing commercial film in Bollywood an obsolete dream.

Let me walk you through the top 5 reasons why I can't wait for Gunday.

The Mystic Charm of Kolkata

I have lived in Kolkata for years and cine lovers like me can assure you that the city is perhaps the best place to shoot your film if you are looking for the choicest antiquities. The sprawling acres of Ganges and the backdrop of Howrah Bridge speaks volumes about the ambiance of a bygone era. Director Ali Abbas Zafar has chosen carefully the most exciting scrim for what seems like a candid story.

Sholay Encore

When the film had released, it was panned by most critics. And yet today most seasoned film critics agree that Salim-Javed's writing in Sippy's Sholay classifies as path-breaking for the fervor it exhibited. There was an intense raw appeal, adequate sensuality and infallible inclusive thrill which commercial Bollywood had symbolized had all been enmeshed in Sholay. Gunday from its trailer seems to bring back the same unusual excitement and rustic gorgeousness to commercial cinema. Even if it isn't perfect and has glitches, it would be enough if there is any remote endeavor on part of the film to abandon the norm of South Indian-ish remake style, bang-boom, car flying style, gravity-defying manner of films. I hope the complains of my flock about the less inspired scripts will be put to rest as Gunday has the look of a more intelligent writing.

Forget the Heroine; Revamped Jai-Veeru are back!

No offence to the brilliant actress Priyanka Chopra but when we go through Gunday's trailer, it is Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor's chemistry that steals the show. They might not be screaming Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todengey' but evidently the duo in words of Ranveer Singh have been buddies since, "Jab hum sabko jante they lekin humein koi nahin janta tha" times. Clearly their real life energy and affection translated well on screen. However, this isn't exactly inkeeping with nuanced bromance Farhan Akhtar had coined with Dil Chahta Hai, they are surely more on lines of Jai and Veeru - loud, dramatic and stellar.

Kaala Patthar

Zafar admitted that he was heavily moved by Kaala Patthar and Zafar in terms of look manages to infuse the same grime of the narrative that the Yash Chopra original had. If I may sound amateurish, the soot-laden clamor looks exciting to me. Zafar has chosen quite a forgotten look and feel for his story.

Irrfan Khan

The versatile and superlatively talented actor is cool, calculative cop who is probably given to handle Bikram and Bala's case. When it comes to his name, perhaps most wrongs gather chances of being ironed out. He embodies a certain level of class, commands poise and when in frame as the parallel lead in the film. Though it will be hard to not root for the adorable male leads, the demeanor of Khan's confidence is perturbing

Film: Gunday, 153 minutes.

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Remember the '90s hit TV series Baywatch, in which lifeguards running on a beach with gleaming bodies were captured to perfection? It was a celebration of sculpted torsos and was mockingly called Babewatch', or Boywatch' (depending on which side you leaned towards). Saving lives at sea was almost an afterthought.

Gunday, led by Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, is Bollywood's scruffier version of Baywatch. And boy, can Bikram and Bala run. Instead of pristine sandy beaches shown in the American show, the Gunday men are soot-kissed and are seen dodging bullets in Kolkata's coal mines.

Set in the 1970s, these two rebels have been given a raw deal in life. Like many children born during the India-Bangladesh crisis, they became instant refugees and society rejects. So what do they do next? They become petty coal thieves and amass a vast business empire by killing and looting.

We are constantly reminded that they are outlaws who are as thick as thieves. Nobody can come between them, that is " until their eyes latch on to bodacious cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra). So far, so good. But what's disappointing is that director Ali Abbas Zafar borrows that time-worn cliche and forgets to add his own spin to it. Don't be surprised if you are left asking: Is there a famine of beautiful girls in Kolkata? The two could get any girl under the sun but they behave like kids fighting over a new toy. The reason for their obsession " which threatens to break their childhood bond " lacks conviction. The dialogue spoken by a breathless Bikram as he courts Nandita: "It's the first time that my calloused, tainted hands are touching an innocent girl," is unintentionally hilarious. Perhaps that can be forgiven as Gunday is an ode to bombastic 1970s cinema that rides on the steam of heroic men who can deliver punchy one-liners.

Of the two boys, it's Singh who shines like a diamond. His act is comparatively polished, while Kapoor comes across as a petulant boy who needs some sense to be shaken into him. Chopra can work a sari like nobody else and tries to pump some pizzazz into a predictable role. Be sure to watch out for Irrfan Khan as a conniving, ruthless cop. He belongs to the subtle school of acting and we wish that our boys (who refuse to grow up into men) had taken a few pointers from him.

If you dig those loud '70s capers, Gunday is right up your street.

Gunday movie review - Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh impresses

Posted On: 12 Feb 2014

Gunday movie review

Ali Abbas Zafar made an impressive directorial debut with "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" in 2011. And in "Gunday" he looks poised to deliver another superhit movie. The story of 1970's two Calcutta bandits looks impressive and interesting atleast in movie trailers. And how they fare out on the silverscreen lets find out in this movie review.

As Irrfan Khan has already introduced in the movie trailer, Gunday is the story of Calcutta's two famous bandits Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor). The movie shows their rise to power by selling the illegally looted coal, their friendship and their love for Nandita (Priyanka Chopra). The movie also portrays the absorbing tale of two bandits who are pursued by intelligent and ruthless cop (Irrfan Khan). So, how these two gangsters fights law and curse of power is the story of the movie "Gunday".

The performance of the entire star cast is nothing short of excellence. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor who underwent serious physical training for their respective roles, look perfect in the role of bandits. Especially, Ranveer who is till basking in praise for performance in his last movie "RamLeela" is phenomenal. Priyanka Chopra in the role of cabaret dancer looks stunning and effortlessly conveys sensuality.

Irrfan Khan in his role of cop is also superb. The direction of the movie is great and cinematographer Aseem Mishra deserves special praise for creating picturesque Calcutta of 1970's.

In the nutshell, Gunday is a great movie which should be watched at least once. The music of the movie adds delight to the experience.
