Salman is always at the losing side in triangular love stories in films. Saajan,KKHH and HDDCS- and in all these 3 movies I wanted Salman to get the girl at the end. But then the film might not have been so poignant and impactful.

^ what you said above my sentiments exactly, breaking norms, the movie could have but it was based on a novel but since its the directors movie he could have changed the story ..and made a bold statement that love concurs all..here it was too predictable..and to keep sensibilities intact SLB didnt take a bold move ..which he could have..and instead gave us a unrealistic ending ..

ANNND this is where everything about the movie pisses me off. Why can't a female character be shown to be strong enough to CHOOSE love over responsibilities for a change!
It is India. Even in modern times I think Bollywood still has an archaic and old fashioned notion about love and romance. Marriage, duty, tradition, culture etc. supersede love and other interests. Eventually, everyone "settles" for good, traditional and safe rather than chasing dreams or romances.
But things are changing – I really liked movies like Jab We Met, Tanu Weds Manu, Aisha because they have headstrong unconventional female protagonists who defy traditions. Their likability is not in the fact that they bend to conform, but their non conformity to convention is what makes them likeable.
And although it wasn't a romance – one movie that really beautifully shows a woman choose herself over her husband is Astitva. The woman has an extra-marital affair but you genuinely feel for her. And after everything is said and done she doesn't apologize and go back to her usual life, she gathers the courage to leave her husband.

The movie 'Provoked' is also a good example of a woman attempting to fight against the preposterous notion that a traditional married woman must tolerate every injustice and cruelty in order to save face from being targeted as a 'fallen disobeying woman'. I'm not supporting violence but damn I did a huge fist shake and a booty dance when Aish retaliated.
I think Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna also 'tried' to break the norms and expectations of Indian movies. But the storyline didn't settle well with me.
