Laila Majnu sequel titled 'Heer Ranjha' announced as Imtiaz Ali and Ektaa Kapoor reunite

The team behind Laila Majnu is set to reunite for a new chapter. Titled Heer Ranjha, the sequel brings back filmmaker Imtiaz Ali and producer Ektaa Kapoor, marking their collaboration after the earlier film gradually gained a loyal following.

Positioned as the second instalment in the franchise, Heer Ranjha draws from one of Punjab’s most enduring love legends. The makers say the film will retain the emotional depth associated with Laila Majnu while interpreting romance through a contemporary lens. The announcement has already generated conversation among audiences who discovered the earlier film over time and embraced it as a cult favourite.

The project will be directed by Sajid Ali, who also helmed Laila Majnu. Filming is expected to begin soon, although details of the cast are yet to be revealed.

Speaking about the development with Bollywood Hungama, Ektaa Kapoor said, “Imtiaz and Sajid have the rare ability to capture love with honesty and depth. While Laila Majnu found its audience over time, and became a cult classic! Heer Ranjha is a love story that aims to transcend time and emotions. We hope to touch audiences across the Indian diaspora and beyond, with our story telling."

Imtiaz Ali added, “Heer Ranjha has its own world and rhythm — it speaks the love language of this generation while staying rooted in something eternal. Collaborating with Ektaa again feels like a natural continuation of a shared emotional language.”

The film is presented by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa Kapoor and Preety Ali under the banner of Pi Films Pvt Ltd. With its Valentine’s Day announcement, the makers appear to be signalling a return to epic romance, banking on nostalgia while aiming to connect with younger viewers.

More information, including casting and release timelines, is expected in the coming months. An official announcement on the lead pair is anticipated soon.
