Personally I have heard from an imam in my area that Wudu is not a necessity to read Qura'an.
Dr. Zakir Naik also is of the same opinion in this video

To each his own I guess. I am not saying you are wrong. I just find the above videos explanation believable. It's not just this one video though I have attended many lectures were this question has been raised and every time I think I have heard a similar opinion.

Ur talking about not even reading Quran with wudu but u can READ without wudu. I agree in the touching part. That is completely true that u can't TOUCH the Quran without wudu. And also the Ali song, I also have a problem with it everytime it comes on. and they r Sufi Muslims not Sunni Muslims. Anyways I am not comparing any groups nor do I have any intention to hurt anyone's sentiments here. No matter u r Shia or Sunni, we all believe in Allah and that is above all😃
So u said u can't read the Quran without wudu. But u can. If u don't have wudu and u read Quran on something digital or even if someone else is holding it for u or if u recite it out of memory, u can read that without wudu but just don't touch the book. I am not an 'Alima but from what I have learn in Islamic school, this was what I was taught. May Allah guide us to the straight path. AMEEN

What matters is the principle of your actions. Purification means cleanliness. Cleanliness is already an obligation for every Muslim. Yes, if you have done Wudu --- good for you. But tell me something, if tomorrow somebody tells you that they don't have water to do Wadu in order to read Namaaz/Quran - Will you stop them from reading both? Niyat (of Wadu) is acceptable.

I'm pretty sure if there was a scholar on this Forum he'll agree.

If u don't have water, then perform tayammum

Hello Lovely Ladies. Seems like there isnt any Shia Muslim around, so to clear few points I am replying to this post (I am a silent reader and you can check my profile I joined IF in 2005 and with this no. Of posts I am no where...lol let me get back to the topic)

Well with the name Zain I can say they might Shia but they are not because I haven't seen any Shia man named as Usman(as far as I know) secondly about namaz timings and the way they are shown offering it...it's so not our way! About timing let me clear it, we do offer it 5 times a day and I fact at some occasions I myself, have offered it at 5 different times, but then again often you will find a Shia praying Zuhr Asr together and Magrib-Esha together. Now coming to the way Alia offered it. That neck movement at the end of namaz(Salam pherna...I guess..sorry if I am wrong..I seriously have no idea about) we don't do it that way! And trust me that is the only difference in our prayers ! No actually we have Qunooth too...we offer it in 2nd rakht of every namaz) apart from it I don't think there anything that is different. I have been to Hajj and I have offered namaz there with all sunni's around me. We didn't had any prob there.

About the difference between our believes. Well we believe that Hazrat Ali(as) is the only caliph and we believe in 12 Imams (as) (descendant of Hazrat Ali a.s) and no we aren't enemies ! :) I have so many Sunni friends and all of respect each other's believe.
About Wazu. Yes before Reading Quran you have to do that, even if you are reading translation. As these are words of Holy Quran, whether they are in some other language you must give it as much respect as you can.

And now coming to that Maula Ali background score. I mean... What is this???? Music in any form is haram in Islam! We all are Muslims! Doesn't matter which school of thought we follow! But we all are Muslims ! And trust me apart from nauha, marsiya, manqabat we don't have any such music! You must be thinking that what are these what I just mentioned! It's is a poetic way and tells you about the story which happened in Karbala! And there isn't any music in it !

And about touching Quran during menstruation, well if you are living in India and Pakistan you must know this that you are not suppose to touch it as during this time you arent pure(Pak)! But Saudis don't believe it! They say you are still pure from heart and you can touch and read it !

Sorry if this post offends anyone in any way! And sorry for some typing errors, I feel lazy to read it again and correct my mistakes ! :p

Thanks for clarifying Alina.. it was a good read.. Exactly as I said just don't play any music..

Suhana: ofcourse we were talking about Quraan being held in your hand so you do need Wudu for that.. and what is a Sufi Muslim? 😕 I have heard about Sufism.. but there is no Sufi Muslim.. and even though as much as I love Sami Yousuf and Meher Zain all kind of "Music" is haram..

I ain't trying to argue or interfere but here I think I must report you that first of all, Wudu is at all accounts necessary before reading the Holy Quran and offering Namaz. And for your question that what should we do if we do not have a supply of water. The answer is that if you do not a supply of water or you are on a journey, you must perform Tayyamum (Dry Ablution). In this kind of ablution you must seek a clean surface or pure sand to perform Wudu.
