Part - 3Later That Night..
Abal turned to the other side of her bed and closed her eyes, thinking that sleep might evade her eyelids soon, but no. It seemed as if slumber was hell bent on not to soothe her with his presence tonight.
But why? She was in the comforts of her home, this was her bed and her room yet still? She checked her cellphone for time and it was past midnight, she couldn't even call Ruhi cuz it was late and besides they just talked a few hours ago.
She again turned side with an irritated sigh and tried to think about something positive as she has read somewhere that positive thoughts initiated sleep. She tried to think about something and her thoughts wandered over to Sultan making her smile. That beast had surely taken over her heart, and almost unknowingly her thoughts wandered over to whom he belonged to, Wali Bakht Khan. The man with freezing intensity and silence that almost makes you think about his presence combined with those eyes that seem perhaps deeper than anything. And whatever she had witnessed today, would made her perhaps more uncomfortable in his presence.
Neelum was her name, isn't it? She was his fiancee maybe? The way she was clinging onto him confirmed that? But they're engaged not married to be so physically close? She had almost unbuttoned his shirt!
The mere thought made her cheeks flare up. What would they do had she not came in?
It did seem weird to her when Badey Sahab asked her to call Wali instead of asking the servants and she had thought to refuse it the instant but then, she had her set of values which didn't allow her to refuse a request of anyone let alone an elderly man who would perhaps be the age of her grandfather.
Then Wali, Did he and Neelum shared intimacy? What would it be like to have him as a lover? What would it be like to you know.. Hold him tight that would perhaps lead to a kiss.. Maybe?
Abal could feel her heart beats rising a bit and that made her snap back to reality.
Why the heck was she thinking about him? Why such thoughts we're clouding her mind? She was surely stupid rather hormonal to think about all of this? She was perhaps bordering on a personal territory that solely belonged to Wali and Neelum, she fitted nowhere in that.
Thinking she was probably going mad, Abal turned her side again and was thankful that sleep was invading her eyelids slowly.
The Next Day..
After taking a good look at the stable and the horses which seemed perfectly fine and working now, Abal walked over to the house. She entered the kitchen to take a glass of water as her throat felt parched when she noticed Salima talking to a lady. From whatever she could make out, the woman seemed elderly and was clad in a simple yet pretty salwar kameez with her head covered with the dupatta. She hadn't seen the lady before in this house and wasn't sure of her identity. It couldn't be Neelum that much she knew.
"Abal Baji? Aapko kuch chahiye tha toh mujhe aawaz de deti, khud taqleef karne ki kya zarurat thi?" Salima spoke up as she spotted her.
The lady turned and Abal noticed that she indeed was beautiful. She must have been one gorgeous woman in her days and even the wrinkles couldn't wore off her beauty.
"Nahi, mujhe bas paani chahiye tha." Abal spoke as she took a glass.
"Badi Bibi yeh Dr. Abal hain. Badey Maalik ne inhe ghodon ki dekh bhaal ke liye rakha hai aur Abal Baji, yeh Badi Bibi hai, Chotey Maalik ki Ammi." Salima spoke as she introduced them.
"Asalaam Walaikum." Abal wished her politely, with a smile.
"Walaikum Salaam Beta, jeeti raho khush raho." Fazeelah spoke, putting a loving hand on her forehead. Abal had an inkling that she would be fond of Wali's mother cuz the woman seemed so kind.
"Tumhe yahaan koi taqleef toh nahi haina Beta? Mulazimo se dhang ka kaam nahi hota, aur main 2-3 din ke liye Karachi gayi thi kaam se toh isliye tumse mulaqaat nahi ho paayi." Fazeelah asked her, kindly.
"Jee nahi Aunty, sab kuch theek hai yahaan." Abal replied with a smile.
"Dekho, agar kuch bhi zarurat ho toh fauran bol dena. Zara bhi hichkichana nahi, theek hai? Mehmaan ho tum humaari." She added.
"Jee Bilqul. Shukriya." Abal smiled at her.
The afternoon had been a busy one as Daud had brought in the vaccines written down by Abal from the hospital and now it was to be done as the horses were without vaccination for at least 2 years or so.
Abal was a tad bit nervous as the first vaccination experience here hadn't got down well. Though she had full faith on her capabilities, yet she was anxious and nervous. So it came as a relief when she injected the vaccines in 2-3 horses and even after an hour, they seemed at ease cuz the if it had to react, the medicine reacts in about an hour.
Sighing in relief, she had then carried out the process on everyone and to her surprise Sultan had been extraordinarily patient through this, she had stroked his head head lovingly which the beast had reciprocated and she couldn't help but notice his kind eyes.
"Aree wah Baji, aapne toh yeh kaam kitni aasani se kar liya." Daud spoke up as she finished injecting the last horse.
"Bas Daud Bhai, aap dua karein ki yeh vaccine kaam kar jaye. Inki sehat aur work ability ke liye yeh bohot zaruri hai." Abal replied, stroking the beast.
"Zarur Karega. Aap itni qaabil jo hain. Ab chalein, khaana khaa lein. Aapko bhook lagi hogi, dopahar ke khaane ka waqt toh kabka nikal gaya." Daud spoke to which Abal nodded as they walked back inside after tying up the horses.
After washing her hands, Abal sat down on the table for a late lunch as Salima served her. Taking up the spoon, she had just taken a bite when she noticed Wali walking into the house. Her eyes followed him like crazy as he walked through the corridor and Abal thought he looked different today, rather handsome in his black shirt and blue denims teamed up with a brown leather jacket. His longish hair fell up to his ears like silk and she always thought what would it be like to feel those beneath her fingertips.
Feeling someone's eyes on him, Wali looked up to find Abal looking at him who in instant looked away from him and in the process coughed as she drank some water.
Why was she looking at him? His phone rang that instant, and he picked it up turning around to talk.
Abal sighed in relief as he looked away from her and she resumed her meal. What was she doing? Looking at him which he perhaps took as staring. But there was something, that she stillp couldn't take his eyes away from him.
Though Wali attended the call, he knew that a pair of eyes were watching him.
That Evening..
Abal was checking her emails on her laptop sitting on what was her favorite, a stack of hay. Since she spend almost all her time here, it gave her very little time to connect with her regular patients. Those who had some urgent situations, the owners mailed her and she replied to them with the solutions. She was working on one when Daud came up to her, running.
"Baji, jaldi chalein." Daud spoke panting.
"Kya Hua sab khairiyat?" Abal asked, seeing his panicked state.
"Woh Sultan.." Daud spoke.
"Kya hua Sultan ko?" Abal asked, keeping her laptop aside.
"Baji, Bas aap chalein." Daud spoke and Abal got up that instant, following him.
They walked over to the stables and she saw Wali standing there too. Trying not to speed up her calm nerves, she quickly walked in without acknowledging his presence. There was Sultan standing, thumping the ground with his feet in every 2 minutes and heck uneasy. The stable caretaker, Nabeel tried to control him but no use as Sultan bobbed his giant head in his direction almost knocking him off. Had Nabeel not been careful, he would have been seriously injured.
"Pichle 2 ghante se bohot pareshaan hai. Kuch khaa bhi nahi raha." Daud briefed her on the situation.
"Main dekhti hoon." Abal nodded and slowly walked towards the animal. Seeing her, Sultan somewhat stopped fidgeting and as she stroked his head lovingly she knew what was up with him.
"Fikr karne ki koi baat nahi hai. Bas thoda temperature hai Sultan ko. Main injection de deti hoon, theek ho jayenge janaab abhi." Abal smiled as she checked his temperature.
And as Abal had promised, no sooner did she inject him with the medicine Sultan had calmed down.
"Ab aadhe ghante baad, aap isse khilaane ki koshish kijiyega. Khaa lenge Janaab!" She spoke, patting his head lovingly.
Abal was about to walk out again without acknowledging Wali's presence when..
"Aapki wajah se Sultan ki yeh haalat huyi thi?" He spoke up as Abal stopped in her tracks. She didn't imagine that she would be blessed with his baritone again.
"Jee?" Abal asked, unsure.
"Maine pucha aapki wajah se Sultan ki yeh halat huyi thi? Mujhe Daud ne bataya ki aaj aapne inn sabki vaccination ki thi.
Don't you think, aapko thoda aur responsible hona chahiye? You're a vet after all. Inhe kya suit karega aur kya nahi that's your business.
How did you vaccinate Sultan ki uska temperature badh gaya? Aapko shayad pataa nahi par Sultan mujhe bohot azeez hai, Usse kuch ho jaata toh main kissi ko nahi chhodta! Agar yahi karna tha toh why did Badey Sahab even appoint you?" Wali spoke up, firmly folding his arms as he breathed fire in every word.
Abal stood quietly, looking at him. His every word pinched her and she just waited for him to finish his rant.
"Exactly! I'm a Vet aur mujhe pataa hai ki kiske saath kya karna chahiye. For Your Information, aaj maine sirf Sultan ki hi nahi sabki vaccination ki thi aur vaccination ke baad, kissi bhi tarah ke reaction ke liye check bhi kiya tha.
Agar kuch side effects ya reactions hote toh baaki sab par bhi effect dikhta. Regarding Sultan, kayi baar vaccination ke baad temperature badh jaata hai and that's nothing to worry about. Jaisa ki Maine kahaa ab woh biqul theek hai and I'm sure you saw that.
Sultan agar aapko azeez hai toh woh meri bhi responsibility hai in fact yeh sab hain. You're not convinced, I understand but it would be better if you don't interfere aur mujhe apna kaam sukoon se karne dein." Abal spoke up, firmly her tone strong and poignant.
Wali couldn't speak up any further.
"Daud Bhai? Mujhe ghar chhod dein, kaafi derr ho chuki hai." Abal spoke and walked away leaving behind Wali who turned to look at her retreating figure which disappeared slowly in the faint evening darkness.
Abal opened the door of the backseat of the car and kept her bag inside when she heard another car pulling up on the driveway. It was the same black Honda Civic and outstepped Neelum as expected.
Dressed in a white top and jeans, she ran her fingers through her highlighted hair and looked at Abal as if she was a criminal and that amused Abal always.
Well, she must be here to meet her fiancee Wali who didn't think twice before throwing such harsh words at her.
"Both Deserve Each Other!" Abal thought and shaking her head got in as Daud drove away towards her home.
