One thing I don't understand is - why is it okay for an Indian man to 'ape the west' while it's not okay for a woman? 😕
Indian men wear pants and shirts, t-shirts and jeans, ties, and even western shoes. Why is that considered to be perfectly fine, and even necessary, but if a woman tries to dress foreign, she is picked on.
I don't remember the last time I wore a kurta or any Indian suit - I usually wear western clothes. And it's not just because I live in the US. Even people in India do the same.
We chastise politicians if they go on a foreign trip wearing a dhoti or a khadi kurta - we want them to be formally dressed in a suit. Why not the same criteria for women? Why is Sonia Gandhi always expected to wear a sari? Why cannot she wear a skirt or a gown once in a while?
Think about it. If it is okay for men, why not for women? Are we still a chauvnist society? Why is a woman supposed to uphold her traditions and present the Indian culture to the world, while the Indian man has no such obligations?

Shady - I think its more related to mass acceptance in India... Men have adopted shirts and trousers in India quite a lot of years back, esp in the urban areas - and now it has almost been accepted as Indian outfits... while for women, even in today's urban world in India - sarees and salwar suits are still the most common attire... thats the dress code to work and all other formal places.. Western clothes for women entered India lot later than for men.. and hence needs time for acceptance.. the other thing is comfort that drives the acceptance of anything, and I think a salwar suit is equally if not more comfortable than a jeans and t-shirt...
I can share my own experience - as a consultant, we are supposed to wear formal western attires at client locations for what our company calls cross-cultural adaptibility... But there have been times when I have worn a saree or a salwar to work even in the West and people have just raved on the attire all day long..
Let me tell you an opposite case here in Canada where the western girls/ladies prefer indian dress to western outfit..
For a New year party, some of my Canadian friends who happen to be girls go crazy to wear the indian long skirt -blouse and duppatta dress (ghagra blouse ???sorry don't know the actual name) and these damned dresses sell for $400 -$1200!!! its crazy.. how can they sell it at that price and by God !!! it weighs quite a few kilograms!! And in Canadian Winter.. it is just too much..But that is the fad..and being fashionable is important. So who says only Indians wear western clothes?? Even the westerners wear indian dress for big soceity parties !!!
Why would anyone spend that much of money on a dress that probably would be worn may be once or twice?? Well only the girls can explain...😕

Its absolutely crazy!! These heavy sarees/ghaghra cholis are so useless.. you spend thousands on them and then dont wear them ever again😕 I would rather buy 10 normal dresses with that money.. that will add a lot more flavour to my wardrobe😛
I think - Nandita Das is the only Indian Actress, who has worn something elegant in Cannes in recent years and looked good😊
