I guess all MDs go through a stage where people might question their ability or their work isn't being appreciated. Sometimes they might not come up with something great so it's just another example of that. The reason it's at the target is because of the event it has been composed for. Such experiences and criticism are needed at times to make people improve or get back up when they are kinda falling down. It isn't really a question of whether he is being over-rated, i don't think if he was over-rated the fingerpointing wouldn't come this late after years.

(maybe it was Feel good factor for India on international stage when the rest of the world was reeling in an economic crisis ). He had much better compositions prior to that in a glorious career stage spanning 17 years till 2008. But his works since Slumdog are steadily going downhill. (Latest being Raavan debacle..).

Is he over-rated or is he loosing his charm or as he become over-confident ?

The music for Slumdog was made for an international audience. Jai Ho may not be his best work, but it has an international appeal, and it's been very much appreciated. His earlier work is great, but it may not have had the same impact.

Sometimes, to really appreciate music of another culture, one either has to belong to it, or have acquired a taste for it. Our ears are attuned to Indian music, and hence, some of our finest Indian melodies may not appeal to western ears, no matter how great they sound to us.... the converse is also true, some of the finest western tunes won't be appealing to Indians.

Personally, I liked the Slumdog soundtrack, especially the two fusion tracks, Mausam and Escape, and Liquid Dance.. brilliantly composed, arranged, and mixed.. credit also goes to the sound engineers for doing a amazing job.

I think A R Rehman is over hyped. He has given some very good songs I love his Lagaan's music.
Rehman is no match for Puncham Burman (SD / RD Burman)(. They were truely gifts..his songs for Guide are out of the world. When he doing music, Indian music was not discovered by the west. They were truely great.

i agree.. i am an ardent fan of ARR.. luvd his music right from roja days.. however, at present his music has gone downhill for sure.. none of his music is having tat charm he used to have before.. raavan n Robot are a big let down to his credit.. dunno whats wrng with his music.. he was sooooo awesum.. e'one has ups n downs but for some reason ARR is going down.. 😭.. n as he has made a place in dis industry n as e'one xpcts best from de legend i think stress is taking over him..

n i think as at the moment most of de people r goin for rock n oder genre he is tryin to make it up for them.. and in tat process he is losing de charm!! i really hope he pulls his socks up soooooooon.

OK, I dunno how you are comparing the 2. Agreed that they are legends, but each in tbeir own fields. The key attribute here is singing/composing, and having an unfair comparison doesn't help at all.AR rehman has been in the industry for a longer time than Sachin has in the sports industry. And lately Sachin hasn't exsctly been doing wonders, he is quite entertaining and practical in his shot making, better than people of his age. But people applaud him for the one big knock he plays in a series. Like in the recent Test series against Lanka, it is his score of 202 or whatever, that kept his average from going down, because otherthan that innings, his performance has been quite average. Nonetheless, he is a talented and star player because of his contributions at that age and his records that he's broken, but that's it. AR Rehman on the other hand, of late, has been creating mind-blowing music. Just look at his compostions in Raavan of late. Other than that, he has represebted the spirit of India in many places and international functions, and the Oscars are just another feather to his cap. 👏

I am in no way degrading Rahman. I have utmost respect of most of his works. Alongwith Illayaraja, he is one the greatest music director to come from South India. Agreed Rahman is a humble human being, so is Sachin. Sachin started his international career in 1989 while Rahman started music composition in movies from 1992 with ROJA. If one big knock of Sachin in enough to dictate a series and turn it into India's way, then the issue is settled then and there. But Rahman's hasn't delivered a hit since Delhi 6 which was sometime back. I feel all the higher level of acclamation & attention he has been getting since SLUMDOG has got to him and has affected his performance. I feel Rahman should have followed Sachin (Sachin gets to choose and play only in selected tournaments) in choosing his films so that he can reserve his best without getting monotonous. Just for your info, A.R. Rahman has composed music in a total of 12 Indian movies in 2010 (the highest for one year in his entire illustrious career), which I feel is way too much. Afterall he is not getting any younger and has already passed his peak.

Other examples that I would like to cite are the current careers of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan & Salman Khan. Some similarities being their huge popularity, cult status among their fans and all are in mid 40's just like their fellow artist and legend Rahman. SRK and Aamir (in lead roles) do like 1 movie a year which turn out to be a big hit because of their sheer dedication & hard work. But Salman does what like half a dozen movies a year, most of them turn out to be box-office flops. My sincere apologies to all the Salman Khan fans, but this is the stark reality. What I want to say is international success and fame seems to have got into Rahman's head and his world-famous humblesness seems to have deserted him. He is intent on cashing on this opportunity by churning more and more averagely composed music and all his charm and talent seems to have got lost in the midst.

One question that I want to pose to all Tendulkar and Rahman's fans in here. If Bharat Ratna award is to be annouced for 2011 and there would be only one candidate for the award, who would you chose? Sachin or Rahman. ???? Yes both are deserving candidates for the prestigious honour and I have utmost confidence that both would get the award at some point in their lifetime? But the question is who would get it the earliest?

I second u whatever u hv written in this para but at the same time i do agree with whatever written by Emptiness( sorry dnt no ur name).
Personally i think soundtracks of Taal, Bombay, Roja and from many other films are much better than music for Slumdog. But as Emptiness mentioned Slumdog Millionare was International film so that he was bound to make music of Slumdog for an international audience. We r used to his finest Indian melodies so for us Slumdog soundtracks were not one of his best. And about Blue, Ravan and Robot.... i will only say that he is trying to flow with a stream. After all Darwin's law states dat Survival of the fittest. Just give some time to A.R., he will definately prove himself again.
Rest, AR Rahman is one of the most humble music director and composer and for dat i respect him from bottom of my heart.

He is the most OVER-RATED person I have ever seen/heard. His music was very good once upon a time but most of his albums lately have one or two good numbers. yet he is praised and treated like god. MDs like Vishal Shekhar, SEL and Pritam have lost out deserving awards because of him as every year they award him for any tom-dick-harry movie he provides the music for.
