That the problem with all Hindi serials I feel. The woman are either goody two shoes without an independant thought or a negative idea in their whole life. The other women are so bad, vampy and bitchy without a single redeeming character. Zoya was more of a real woman earlier who gave back as she got. She watched cricket, hit guys, fought back when cornered and cried and laughed as normal woman do. Now she is a total doormat who tries to be too good to Tanveer whom she should ideally hate and cries at a drop of hat when Asad says something hurtful. I would like the real Zoya to stand up, the one who gives it back to Asad. Maybe I would not hate Asad so much if Zoya reacted strongly to him.

Rather than developing the characters and moving the story forward all Gul is showing is repetitive dialogues and eye lock scenes that are not vital to the story. I am with the opinion that Zoya needs to stand up for herself.Once she stands up for herself Asad's character will automatically have to be shown changing and learning to respect and accept Zoya the way she is.

@underline- exactly my thoughts. Showing a dominating, orthodox, arrogant man is no problem as long as it is also shown that he is wrong and made to mend his flaws due to the woman he loves, and the woman need to change him not in a regressive way like crying, weeping, almost sacrificing her life etc etc which is shown in a lot Indian movies earlier, there need to be progressive way of changing that man.

This is very very good post. Well done for bringing out this debate!

It is amazing how many relevant issues have been pin-pointed!
Personally, I agree to some of them... like:

1) Zoya isn't the girl they started off with. Happens with all the leads in Gul's show, and its absolutely bogus! It completely encourages other women to be submissive once they are in love :(

2) Men are MCPs in her show - while there are real men that way as well... why can't Gul show them mellowing down instead of the female lead? Why doesn't their character develop? Even if they were to stay MCPs... they need to meet the women half way, and not expect them to be completely submissive. This sends out the message that it's ok for women to fall in love with men who do not respect them.

3) In QH particularly, they should have shown a good mix of east and west. Zoya, the character, by no angle seems like a girl from the US.

It would be good to work on both of the characters because they both support the message of demeaning women in society. Zoya is stepped over on again and again... because she allows it. And Mr. Khan has what-so-ever no conscience of his wrong-doings... therefore the tezeeb and tameez he preaches of, is never followed by himself.

Great topic! Personally, I think the best solution is a middle ground.

If the guy is too conservative and the girl too progressive, they will constantly butt heads and eventually split after the initial attraction fizzles out! Respect, trust and love are key factors in a successful relationship.

In the case of Asad and Zoya, both characters have multiple layers of complication! Due to their past family history, both are outwardly forceful but internally insecure, esp in love.

Asad: I don't understand how Asad can be so conservative considering he was raised by a single woman, who appears to be educated : speaks flawless English, watches plays, reads books and is not overly conservative in her approach or dressing (I love Dilshad!!). Is he just possessive and protective about his Mother and Sister? I think the writers are not consistent in keeping up with the character. The man who balked at Zoya meeting her friend "Mahindra" has no qualms hugging his bestie Tanveer in public? Hypocrite? He has accepted his love for Zoya, he now needs to build on the respect and trust factors!

Zoya: I love this character. A woman after my own heart. Gives back as good as she gets. Fearless but innocent. That's how she was initially portrayed. The constant bickering with Asad and his set ways. Telling him on his face that he belongs to the 17th century, refusing to adhere to his rules etc.! So what happened? Again creatives being inconsistent with her character. And as others have pointed out, it's just not with Asad. I wish she had reacted differently in the following scenes:
  • The women insulted at the Prayer ceremony. Good for Dilshad defending her but why didn't Zoya react to the baazaru statement?
  • Asad's slap and manhandling. She forgave him easily.
  • Razia's slap. I would have slapped back if I was in her shoes.
  • After the Tanveer blood and fire incidents, why did she forgive Asad so easily? She needs to play hard to get.
  • When she found the torn sari, why not show one of the Khans? Heck, I would have preferred if she had gone to Asad and asked him why he gifted her a torn sari. Turn the tables, accuse him and give him a dose of his own medicine! 😆
The things I like about Zoya:
  • She continues to wear jeans inspite of Asad not liking it (at least initially). I hate the pallu-on-head overdressed (at home) bahus in other shows.
  • She had no qualms wearing a Kurti/Jeans to a traditional event.
  • She questions Asad on his true feelings: "Is this asli or nakli? You mean it, na? Please tell me." She tells him "you hurt my feelings". Needs to do more of it. Also, wish she would open up about her feelings and take the initiative in leading the relationship!
  • Her vibrant and cheerful personality. Love her shayaris and antics!
  • She retorts back to Asad. Calls him names on his face: Akdu, Jahapana, 6 packs, Eye candy ...😆
  • Openly staking her claim on Asad during the Masterji's dance scenes. "Jealous? Haan hoon, Toh?"
  • I love her techie skillset and fix-it approach. Although she does go overboard sometimes.
Zoya trusts Asad, although he confuses her with his kabhi ha kabhi na approach. She loves him but has not recognized it yet. Respect? Maybe. I really don't know! So, emotionally is she better off than Asad? That's another debate! 😆

Back to your question, I think Zoya's character was almost perfect. CVs have to be consistent. If I had to change one of them, it will be Asad and his overtly conservative and narrow-minded approach. I can't relate to no jeans, no dancing, no talking at the dinner table, no going out alone etc. He does seem to be mellowing a bit.

I'd also like to see a career woman balancing home duties. Lets face it: a lot of women are doing that now (at least in the US). Including me!😉 Why waste a degree?

*gets ready to write a long lecture*

You know what I think of Gul's idea of a 'hero'. Trashy. You know what I think of Gul's idea of romance. Twisted. You know what I think of Gul herself. Indian version of Stephanie Meyer. That said, I will agree with many people, and say that she still has a catchy storyline. She knows how to intrigue and audience and she really knows how to pick leads for her show. Regarding characters, that's where she'd lose out completely. When I think back to the lead characters I know, they're all the same, with no growth. Be it male or female.

Asad - Guy repeatedly harasses Zoya. Mentally and emotionally. I get it, that he is a hardcore man with a troubled past. And he's likely to blame everyone else for everything. But then after being proved wrong over and over again, he doesn't even hesitate before shouting at Zoya? After being shown that she gets hurt whenever he raises his voice against her and humiliates her, he doesn't stop to think 'hang on I love this girl, should I really be doing this to her?' He's stuck in the same place he was. At least in the first episode, when he almost had an accident with her, he had the decency to come out and inquire whether she's alright. Now, I doubt he'd do that before shouting at her about being in his way! He's still the same old Asad we knew in the first episode.

Zoya - I have to blame her as much as Asad here. If Asad has not grown, she seems to have backtracked ever since falling in love with Asad! what happened to the girl who made Asad say sorry a billion times for one mistake? Now he goes on to make mistakes upon mistakes and she happily dresses up in the saree he gives her to go and see what he wants?! Really? She used to answer back to him, whenever he used to get angry at her unfairly, but now she sheds a few silent tears before going to prove herself right? And then he says a mere 'sorry' and everything is alright once again. Had she given him a cold shoulder regarding the whole chicken incident, he might have realized that she's someone who's not going to accept shit from him. Maybe then he would've thought twice before shouting at her regarding Tanveer! Hence, I feel Zoya's backtracked a bit.

Overall, as you said, there are Asad kind of people in the world. And there are Zoya kind of characters as well. I think it would be fine if Gul wants to show the dark, rich, broody men as heroes. but she should also show girls who do not put up with these kind of men. She should show girls take a stand for themselves and show these guys that so what if he's got everything materialistic, it's the heart that gives real happiness. And it doesn't come by showing your dominance or power over people.

A part of the issue is the audience itself. Honestly look around this forum and tell me how many, apart from the ones debating this issue and a few others, truly believe that this kind of behaviour is acceptable? How many posts have we had that have supported Asad's every deed? How many posts have we had about how the baazaru woman was wrong because while Zoe was in western wear it at least covered her from head to toe? Gul and other Indian writers for tv shows write this stuff because this convoluted nonsense is what sells.

Ohh.. Twilight!!!!! You know it was called the 'next Harry Potter'..!! Don't even get me started on the amount of difference in the story and characters let alone the literature!! I mean.. VAMPIRES?? A girl whom everyone falls in love with.. but the girl still thinks she's nothing?? A girl who has a daughter for a mother, a loving father, a really good friend and a group of good friends, wants to kill herself for a Vampire?! And teenage girls are supposed to relate to it.. Because I remember the last time I wanted to commit suicide because a guy I liked didn't like me back.. *Facepalm* Oh my days!!

OOHHH!!! There were posts romanticizing Asad's slap!!! Pissed me the hell off.. made me wonder what Gul is showing the audience. Most people on the forum I'm guessing are teenage girls. impressionable teenage girls. Which is what I made a point of in my last post I created, so I really don't want to repeat the whole argument here.
