Banita Sandhu pairs with Diljit Dosanjh as Sharvari and Vedang Raina join Imtiaz Ali’s 1940s Partition movie

Imtiaz Ali is preparing for another ambitious project, this time set during the Partition of India in the 1940s. According to reports, the untitled drama will feature Diljit Dosanjh and Banita Sandhu in lead roles, alongside Sharvari and Vedang Raina.

Mid-day reported that the first schedule began in Mumbai last month. A source told the publication that the story will focus on two love stories set against the backdrop of Partition. “Banita, who was last seen in Detective Sherdil, caught Imtiaz’s eye in that film. He cast her opposite Diljit after being impressed with her performance. The actors were recently spotted filming at the Asiatic Library in Mumbai,” the source said.

Sharvari’s announcement

Sharvari shared the news of her collaboration with Imtiaz Ali on her birthday. Posting on Instagram, she called it a long-awaited dream. “Ever since I decided to become an actor, I have manifested working with Imtiaz sir. This is the most special birthday gift and a huge learning opportunity. It is an honour to be a part of his vision,” she wrote.

The film also stars Naseeruddin Shah, with Sheetal Sharma handling costumes. Sharma had earlier designed for Imtiaz’s Chamkila.

Partition backdrop

The film is set in Punjab during the 1940s and explores how Partition uprooted lives and reshaped personal relationships. A source explained, “While Sharvari plays the female lead opposite Vedang Raina, the film weaves in multiple generations of families torn apart by migration. Imtiaz does not intend to show Pakistan directly, though references will be part of the narrative.”

Both Sharvari and Vedang have already gone through look tests as part of pre-production. The project will highlight heartbreak and displacement without resorting to heavy political commentary.

Diljit’s upcoming projects

Diljit Dosanjh, who recently featured in Chamkila directed by Ali, will also appear in Border 2, co-starring Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, and Sunny Deol. The film is slated for release in 2026. Reports suggest he has stepped away from No Entry 2 due to scheduling conflicts.

With a mix of seasoned actors and new faces, Imtiaz Ali’s Partition drama promises to explore an emotional chapter of history through personal stories of love and loss.
