The Bowl of Contention

I've been meaning to ask you guys something.

So we have people who keep saying (including me) that Gul should start writing progressive male characters. Who respect women and treat them right and all those other things. And how Asad should start doing this and that (you guys know the drill)
But there are still others who think Zoya should give back and we should have a female lead who demands respect. Because society is filled with men like Asad. So Gul shouldn't change Asad but change Zoya, and how she reacts.

Since it's a debate you have to pick one. *evil smile*

It's just for fun and to see the opinions that people have.

So hit me with it.

~RC

PS- India Forums annoys me. It really does. You have to be like overly obsessed that you can't think clearly, or you have to hate everyone and everything. So this is my middle ground. I want to talk to people who are in this middle ground with me. Who like QH and Karan and Surbhi but can actually see past that and have healthy discussions. At the same time not put the actors down in a very demeaning manner.Middle ground between a critics hub and fanclub. Because I'm not both. I can't identify with people who are both those things. And that's only my predicament ofc. People are entitled to whatever they please. The bowl of contention means debating. I like debating. It's fun.

So this might be a cop out on the debate but I honestly believe they dumbed down and declawed Zoe post Tanveer's arrival. Zoya used to give it back to Asad but somehow her character got lost in the propping of Asad.

Asad unfortunately needs to be written more progressively. Why is it that fiction writers believe that for a man to be hot, sexy and powerful he must completely dominate a woman? It's the regressive M&B nonsense that really just makes me want to pull my hair out.

Why can't a man be written as hot, sexy, powerful, understanding, kind, progressive, respectful of others opinions?

Take all three of Gul's heroes - Maan, Arnav and Asad. They have all been written with the chauvinistic view point that women cannot be good at work or if they work they MUST be secretaries (at least Asad hasn't done that yet) or they believe if you are angry with a woman...especially a woman you love then you must put your hands on her and scare the living daylights out of her.

I actually don't believe that today's generation or let me degeneralize it a bit...men that I know are not that. They can disagree and get mad without getting physical. They can still be hot and sexy without making you want to smack the living daylights out of them for being such mcps.

Men can be written successful without being domineering. And hopefully Indian audiences will wake up to that.

Good post RC :)

Are you gonna play devils advocate? I am happy to debate both sides, lol

THAT was why i started to watch QH. I still play those scenes on the loop sometimes. There wasn't romance but the chemistry was still so amazing.

Lesser said about Gul's previous 'babies' the better. I go nuclear đŸ˜†

They can still be hot and sexy without making you want to smack the living daylights out of them for being such mcps. I've seen men like Asad and a lot of men are still like that. That's why it's important for Zoya to stand up and send a message to the audience. That way Gul can have her Mills and Boon at the same time send out a message.

Men can be written successful without being domineering. And hopefully Indian audiences will wake up to that.

Well what's done is done and can't be changed at this point. I mean Asads character being an MCP. It's the TRUTH and can't be changed at this moment. Hence I would put my 2 cents on revisiting Zoyas character. Yes I got attracted to her because of those initial promos which portrayed Zoya to be a strong girl and gives back as much as she gets.
I think this Zoya we are seeing here nowadays is sooo not that same Zoya we fell in love with or the one Gul had in mind from the very beginning. Somehow the writers have changed her character to a dumb, docile, uncool character who is soo engrossed in this MCP lover of hers , forgot her personality altogether and decided to play a doormat.
My req to Gul please bring back old Zoya and keep her the way you portrayed her from the beginning. If Zoya is back to her original character and gives left , right and center to Asad he will come around and everything to come back to its place.
Good post Buddy.

You see it my way!

Exactly.

I want a female character I can relate and that isn't Zoya any more. It used to be. I used to LOVE her dialogues. In my first post on this forum months ago I stated that it was the bold dialogues of Zoya that really drew me to the show.

The dialogues on feminism and the spunk and all those things.

I want that back to compensate the chauvinism.

Haha true I would hate the Mary Sue types...but she could make them playboys. I mean whats wrong with that? That way they can be naughty, sexy and slightly chauvinistic but not to the point where women like us want to throw something at the tv screen đŸ˜†

I do think it's important for Zoe to stand up for herself. I know that there are men out there (especially in India and the sub-continent) who think a woman's place is at his feet but if one woman can change the way her son is brought up then maybe we would have less of that. But I guess it comes back down to the woman being able to stand up for herself. Self-help is always the best help and I think when slapgate happened if Zoe had mustered the courage to knock the taste out of his mouth for it I wouldn't have been half as upset about it.

I think a lot of this comes down to culture. We still live in a society where this kind of behaviour is accepted so it does not change. It's like a merry-go-round that does not stop.

Gul always does this to her female characters. They become unrecognizable versions of themselves. I think with Zoe they can still fix it. But I am not too hopeful.

Eactly what I'm saying. I would hate on Asad nearly as much is Zoya gave back. And it keeps it interesting if they are on equal footing.

Damon Salvatore/Ian Somerhalder = MY ULTIMATE WET DREAM (sorry over share đŸ˜†)

@bold - take Haseena Bi for instance. Women like her unfortunately do exist. In fact there are many with the same regressive thinking around here ( i'll keep here vague đŸ˜ƒ) The idea that a woman can't, drink, dance, date, sing...like what the hell is wrong with these women??

I was recently reading a TOI article where a woman made a statement saying - "Pre-marital sex should be made punishable by law" What are we the Taliban?

Even post the Delhi Rape how many women made statements questioning what the victim was doing out at that time of night. Like are you freakin kidding me?

Sometimes I wish shows would show these women being incarcerated. They are honestly disgusting. On this very forum people make statements saying that Zoe is wearing full sleeve shirts so it's not indecent. Do they mean to say sleeveless shirts, shorts and skirts are?

It's kinna scary. I think TV, women, mean and society in general need a mind set change. If we as women can't respect other women and ourselves what hope do we have of men doing it?

I think for me - Zoya being a character from NY I expect her to be more spunky and the sort who can yell back instead of just standing there and listening to all Asad has to dish out.
