I always wonder if someone did a show with a stubborn, arrogant, angry, and sometimes cruel girl, would people be just as accepting of her as they are of such a male character? I doubt it very much.

If Zoya acted like Asad I know for a fact people would call her certain names I don't want to mention.

Because that is the double standard of our society. But the saddest part to me is that it is the girls who will be saying those certain names to another girl. When women don't stick up for women then why will men?
And we wonder why men in India seem to not have any respect for women? We wonder why all the crimes against women happen? It is all because of society.

This is the most complicated bit.

First just talking about myself.
Did I swoon over today's episode? Yes.

Did I seethe over yesterday's episode? Yes

What I noticed is people tend to look at these scenes individually and not in cumulation.

Like when i see a cute scene, I'm only thinking of that scene. I'm not thinking Asad slapped Zoya, I'm just looking at it separately.

This doesn't mean those things did affect me. It quite simple shows my attention span.

This isn't anything Gul Khan special, it's an Indian TV trend.

And people swooning over romantic scenes doesn't mean they support manhandling. If they don;t react to the manhandling or think the manhandling is romantic now that's a problem but merely swooning over these scenes just means everyone wants a bit of romance in their lives or maybe they just like how Karan and Surbhi look together.

I'm not going to justify Asad or Zoya. Your choice.

That is where the problem lies. Like Jayne said many girls actually think the way the man treats the woman is romantic because it is being portrayed as romantic on screen. Young women are impressionable and even if they aren't...the more you keep seeing something in a romantic context...the more you think it is acceptable. It has a psychological affect on you. You may expect it from guys, or even think it is acceptable when it happens to you.
Think of gay marriage in US. People used to be very strongly opposed to it just a decade ago and now with the help of media- due to all those shows with gay men and lesbian women- the gay marriage approval ratings are the highest they have been...that too in just a decade.

Rocker,

This is called impinging on the sub-conscious level.

When one is bombarded with such scenes on reel and likely in real life, it becomes a matter of course.
Violence should never be 'normal'.

Yet, that is what becomes ingrained into the psyche that such 'manhandling', such demoralizing, such humiliation, is par for for the course to being female, and if one is in 'love' or imagines oneself to be in love, one must accept all this and other sh*t.

Which is why they keep broadcasting that BCC announcement about complaints regarding violence, etc. across the shows at various intervals.

If no research and real life proof existed on such profound influence of media on impressionable minds - no matter how young or old - one would not have to worry about content.

@RC-Bang on..I couldn't have said it better..What you said actually happens to most of us..Honestly, there have been times when i have wanted to smack Asad but the next moment there is a cute scene, i do end up finding it adorable..For instance, i was extremely annoyed with Asad's behavior yesterday but that din stop me from enjoying their scenes today..Its probably got to do with Karan and Surbhi than Asad and Zoya😆

😕

Are you giving an example of psychological effect or are you giving an example of how wrong has been accepted as right in your analogy?

I think you're underestimating women.

You're a woman, i'm a woman.

Do you think manhandling is okay just because you watched ipk/qh? Do I think it? Nope. Why do you think other women are dumb?

I don't support what so ever what's shown on tele and I'm totally in full support for the anti man handling campaign.

But I also think that the indian women are quite smart.

both...wrong has been accepted because there is psychological effect on the mind...because you think this sort of behavior is acceptable.

It really depends, Rocker.

For many who have grown up not in the time of Ekta Kapoor shows, this is tripe.
For those who have, and yes, I personally know of many, this is just what happens in life...men abuse women, and women cry, but then forgive and get on with living with that same d*bag.
This is because she 'loves' him or imagines he 'loves' her.

Very few women are brave enough to step away from such a situation or even think that they can do so.

And to be honest, reviewing the level of postings on this forum, these are the 'accepting' lot.

Jayne

When I look around all the forums I visit...I start doubting that women are smart. Either way I am talking about younger girls right now, but it can affect older women too.
You overestimate us and you underestimate the influence of mass media. Much research has been done on the influence of mass media. I could actually go to my psycinfo database and look up articles right now. I'm a psyc major thus I have access. 😊

P.S. I love your user ID.

I'm going to play devil's advocate.Coz I've gone crazy. Let's summarize the thoughts that each of us is happy/comfortable with:

Nisha: Manhandling in romance is unacceptable. Homosexuality is unacceptable.

Jojo: Manhandling in romance is unacceptable. Homosexuality is acceptable.

Mojo (random girl): Manhandling in romance is acceptable. Homosexuality is acceptable.

Momo (another random girl): Manhandling in romance is acceptable. Homosexuality is unacceptable.

Each of these 4 people have different opinions and they are happy with it. So if a girl finds it acceptable to be manhandled by her man and her happiness index does not diminish because of it...what is wrong with it? Are these rules/truths/ideas universal? Who decides right and wrong, anyway? What are the parameters? Why? How?
