except... in our home..our converstations would end with..
my brother saying "beta tumne duniya nahin dekhi hai..tum nahin samjhogi' 😆

well then I suppose I dont understand because my older brother would never ever say anything like that to me. He believes in freedom of choice. Plus we were raised in Mumbai where security was never an issue for me. And now we live in America where again security doesnt seem to be an issue. But I dont think that is the whole scope of the issue. My brother is like that- he is modern, he believes in equality, he believes in personal freedom and space. Just like he doesnt tell me what to do, he doesnt expect me to tell him what to do. I think its about orthodox thinking. I mean if safety was really that big of an issue as you all seem to make of it then how is it that those friends of hers are allowed to wear jeans? Why arent their parents stopping them if it really is so unsafe? Why didnt Zoya already get raped or molested since she has been out in pubic wearing jeans? Yes the goons were after her but that was because the first time she ran away from the wedding and the second time she threatened to call the cops. Her clothes had nothing to do with either of these events. I think some people are willing to ignore the blatant hypocrisy or dont see it because we all love KSG and so we can ignore and make excuses for his behavior and move on.
Why is this debate so interesting btw? Everytime I promise ok I am done now...gonna do hw or something but then I visit IF and see more comments and am compelled to post something. Its probably because this issue about women's rights is close to all women I suppose.
P.S. Great topic Somi. My blood boiled yesterday when I heard him make such despicable (to me) comments. I thought of armaan and how he would never have said anything like that...which shocked me all the more since I didnt know Asad was so much of a conservative..complete opposite of armaan.

Guys it's not uncommon for a brother to restrict what their sister wear.My brother does not say anything when I wear jeans, but he will get mad when I wear some short dresses.😆It's in every culture, but still don't agree with Asad on jeans.I can see why he said it though.

A suit is something you wear to work, it is as formal as clothes could get. So maybe Mister Khan doesn't have double-standards but is shown to be adhering to the dress code of his work place. However yes I had the exact same question in my mind when he forbade his sister to wear jeans whereas as it is, he was already wearing a suit.

For what its worth..every family and every culture have their own dynamics and purely subjective.

I don't think I am excusing Asad's behavior. Several statements he made were unwarranted. (read my post on pg16)

Trust me I am NOT into KSG and that's not clouding my judgement. Trust me.. When I lived in India, and now I live in US and I have always had complete freedom of choice.

I didn't say that I change my wardrobe after such a comment. All I wanted to mention was some big brother reacting like that is not surprising to me.. Sometimes things are said affectionately and mostly jest.

I am not quite sure..what statement in my post made your blood boil. That was not the intent of my post. responding since you quoted my post in your response.

More power to you and your brother.

I am glad that you dont excuse Asad's behavior but maybe some others do. I used to happen in IPK forum (when I used to watch it) where people would forgive ASR's terrible attitude bc of Barun Sobti...since they thought he is so hot.

Btw, nothing in your statement made my blood boil. When I watched qabool hai yesterday and heard Asad's comments...thats what made my blood boil.

gotcha 😃...

Waise for what it's worth.. I posted on page 16. also..

Its too early to tell. Asad and Zoya's first interactions... didn't show either of them in best light. Her reactions were also OTT. His reactions though polite.. were also quite terrible.

A stereotypical New yorker dressed atypically ..would get similar reaction if he/she goes to some deep south US or suburbia small town. US is not NYC or LA (I am sure you agree). Mumbai is not India

US mein bhi . women tend to get blamed if they dress provocatively. On the surface, US may appear more free and "secure"..but the issues women face are quite similar here as well. Do I like it.. NOPE...Though, that's a topic for different discussion. (btw..I live in Chicago).

show mein..Zyada melodrama dikha rahe hain. CVs have introduced too many things at a fast speed.

My blood also boils when they speak about Nikhat's complexion. Pet peeve of mine on how desis are obsessed with fair skin and how gora=beautiful ... regardless of which religion you belong to..and that issue is not even related to feminism.

Desi soaps continue perpetuating these .. and don't even try to bring any change. I am trying to be hopeful and maybe .. this show will give it a try..

dekhte hain ..

As to why I am still posting here.. Somy ki post hai...TRP bada rahi hoon..until she creates another one 😆

Well I live in a very small town in GA (about 2000 pop). And still I feel very safe. People here can wear the same clothes you would in NYC. You can wear short clothes, short dresses, fashionable clothes...almost all girls wear shorts and tank tops (indecent ones might I add) or dresses in summer. and the university I go to...man I have seen girls wear booty shorts in class and tops with half their breasts hanging out. It is so inappropriate and gross but still its acceptable. And these women are just as safe as I am unless they are roaming around in the middle of the night in an alley.
Yes nikhat's complexion talks makes my skin boil too but that was said by a old fashioned idiotic woman. The reason Asad's comments angered me more is because he is the hero. And about skin color- own what you have... dark or fair skin be proud of it. I think if nikhat was more confident than people wouldnt treat her this way because she would be able to defend herself if she was more confident about her appearance but she is very docile.

I actually wasn't surprised with Asad's dialogues about not wearing jeans and not hanging out with people who wear jeans. It's his character and behavior. At that time I didn't see a brother but saw a father in him. There are still many men like Asad who refuse the women in their family to wear modern clothes. Though I don't at all support their idea but its their family matter and their culture.

Also I hope to see a more brotherly side of Asad soon.

Trust you to make a post that gets such fantastic reactions.😊

to all 🤗 It is really great and quite interesting to read different views (side note.. I am a Hindu.. brought up in big city but with extended family scattered across small/big towns/cities... and I did not like the chart posted).

I don't think there is a right and wrong answer here. Influence of religion and culture discussions are always subjective. It comes down to idealism vs realism. (or what's considered "modern" )

Asad's comments on being modern ..is in the mind.. was bang on.. but how much would we see that practiced..is up to CV's.

Though we all agree that clothes do not make a person, but we all know that in today's world, a person with visible tattoo, eyebrow piercing, and what have you.. ..would not get hired in a conservative corporate culture. There is a reason why some businesses enforce dress code policy.

By same note.. someone in creative fields can get away with a lot more.

We don't know what Asad's work place is. Is he a businessman ? I don't know. I will give him a benefit of doubt.

The question of Najma wearing jeans to visiting a social meeting place, can not be used as an argument to how Asad dressed up for office..a professional place. IMO.

His comments to Najma.. appeared to me.. like a big brother watching out for lil sis. I have a big brother. I respect him and sometimes wary of getting him upset. All through my teen years and even now, he comments on me wearing makeup, or dress a certain way. It was always annoying. Did I always give in..No.

In the show, I can see that Najma may sneak out and do things Asad is asking her not to do. The show has just started. I am sure these scenes will start showing up.

Asad's comments on Zoya .. when she was dressed as a bride .. were not unwarranted. If a girl (or a guy) was walking down a road dressed up in all wedding finery.. trust me ..they will get stared at EVERYWHERE in this world. Even in Zoya's NYC.

Asad's comment on asking Zoya to keep her eyes down and using poorab vs paschim argument.. is the one I did not like. This is where his arrogance or anger or double standards comes into play.

If he truly believes, modernism is in the thinking, that statement makes him a hypocrite...even if said in anger.

Lamba ho gaya... kya karoon aadat se majboo..Jaani 😆
