THE HEART KNOWS
CHAPTER 48 (A)
Arnav woke up first. The memories of the previous night rushed to him and he looked at his beautiful wife sleeping beside him. She used his chest as her pillow. He gently laid her head on the pillow and got up from the bed.
He was tired and his legs felt as if someone had tied heavy weights to them.
He kissed her forehead and said, "I'll be back soon, jaan."
Thirty minutes later, Arnav returned with coffee and a glass of lime juice. Khushi was still asleep. He placed the coffee and lime juice on a nearby table and got into the bed with her.
Khushi stirred and opened her eyes slowly. She found herself in her husband's arms and smiled.
"Good morning, Arnav."
"Good morning."
She tried to get up and that was when the first step of the after effects of alcohol called the hangover struck her. She winced and laid back on the bed.
"Kya hua mujhe?" she asked Arnav. [What happened to me?]
"Hangover."
"Kya?" [What?]
"You were drunk last night. A bit too much. That's why."
He gave her the glass of lime juice. She took it from him and drank it without saying anything. When she finished the glass, she looked at Arnav who was staring at the floor with an unreadable expression on his face.
Khushi knew something was wrong and she tried to think of everything that had happened the previous night. She remembered seeing Arnav with that girl, Tina. The memory about her parents were vague but it was there. After that, there was nothing. She didn't remember what she had done after drinking so much.
"Khushi, tune kya kiya?" she thought. "What was the need to drink that awful tasting liquid? It is true that you saw him with another girl. But is it reason enough to do this? I don't remember what I did last night. Did I embarrass him?"
Arnav noticed that Khushi was lost in her thoughts and shook her shoulder.
"Khushi, we have to go."
Only then she looked at her surroundings. They were in the garden's little house. How did they come here?
He took the empty glass and put it on a nearby table.
She hesitantly called him. "Ar... Arn...av..."
He turned around.
She didn't have the courage to look at him and she lowered her eyes.
She bit her lip and asked, "Kal kya hua? [What happened yesterday?] Did I do something that hurt you?"
Her questions only increased his guilt.
"We have to go. Let's talk about this later."
When he tried to get up from the bed, his legs felt a little weak and the world in front of him blurred. He hadn't eaten anything since the previous morning. He had skipped lunch due to a sudden meeting which had popped up in his schedule and he had skipped dinner as he didn't want to leave Khushi alone. On top of all that, his medicines were over and he hadn't restocked them yet.
Even thought Arnav's back was towards Khushi, she sensed that something wasn't right. She immediately got up from the bed and held his hand. She made him sit and gave him the cup of coffee which was left untouched on the table.
"Drink it," she ordered him.
He closed his eyes and sipped the coffee.
"You didn't have dinner last night?"
He remained silent.
"Why do you have to be so stubborn? You could have had dinner. Are you trying to prove something by not eating?"
Her concern angered him.
He slammed the coffee mug on the table and said, "Stop it, Khushi."
She didn't let his anger intimidate her.
"I won't. What will you do?"
She took the coffee mug and pushed it into his hands again.
"Chup chap yeh coffee peelo. Agar mujhe daantna hai, tho coffee peene ke baat daanto." [Stup up and drink this coffee. If you want to scold me, drink this coffee and then scold me.]
A tear rolled down his cheek before he could blink it back.
Khushi noticed it and wiped it with her thumb.
She made him face her and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Why should I scold you, Khushi? You should be the one who should scold me."
"Kyun?" she asked in concern. [Why?]
"You don't remember that I was with one of my ex girlfriends? Because of that, you drunk a lot. Now, you are concerned about me and I am not even able to say sorry. You should scold me, Khushi."
"Mujhe sorry nahi chahiye," she said with a frown. [I don't want a sorry.]
"You should be angry with me," he mumbled without listening to her. "I am..."
To stop his thought process, she slapped him. Not the slap which would leave behind three or four finger prints. But the slap which would leave the other shocked without being too painful. And Arnav was indeed shocked and he did stop talking.
"Aaj tum bahut bol rahe ho. Ab main bolungi and you have to listen. Woh ex-girlfriend ya y-girlfriend, mujhe farq nahi padtha. [You are speaking too much today. Now, I will tlak and you have to listen. I don't care whether she is your ex-girlfriend or your y-girlfriend.] I just know that you were standing so close to somebody other than me and... and... And you were holding her waist. How can you do that in front of me? Par uske liye tum itni guilt mehsoos math karo. [But for that you don't have to feel so guilty.] Because you are just mine. Even if you want, you will not be able to feel with others what you feel for me." She paused for a second and said, "Achcha nahi laga mujhe. Par it's okay. [It didn't feel good. But it's okay.] It was a weak moment for me and when I saw you with her, I got that stupid headache." She poked his chest and said, "And I am warning you for the last time, Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada. I don't care whether people find you attractive or handsome. You stay away from other girls."
"Khushi..." he said in disbelief.
"Haan. Khushi hoon main. Dho dho Khushi tumare peeche padi huyi na? Theesri ki kya zarrurat hai?" [Yes. I am Khushi. There are two Khushis behing you, right? Then why do you need a third one?]
When she got up from the bed, he placed the mug on the table and pulled her. She fell on top of him and he wrapped his arms around her waist.
"I have known Tina ever since she entered the modelling field," he told her. "She was the sort of a person whom you would want as a friend. But you know how ASR was, don't you? He did not see any of it and made her his girlfriend. Eventually he did realize that the girl was too good. So, he chose to have a break up and made her his friend. She then had to go to Mumbai as her father had a heart attack. After that, she started working in Mumbai and we lost touch. We met yesterday after a long time. She told me that she was engaged and was about to get married. I was happy for her. But I know that I crossed my limits."
"Tell me their names," Khushi demanded.
"Whose names?"
"Your ex and y girlfriends."
"Khushi, why are you doing this to yourself? They were in my life before I fell in love with you."
She was adamant. "I know Lavanya and Tina. So, give me the other three names."
"How do you know the exact number?"
"Names, Mr. Raizada."
"What are you going to do with the names?"
"General information. Now, tell me the names."
He didn't have a choice other than tell her the names.
He took a deep breath and said, "Tina, Priya, Sunita, Sheetal and Lavanya."
There was silence.
"I am sorry, Khushi."
"Nahi. Nahi chahiye mujhe tumara sorry." [No. I don't want your sorry.]
"Khushi, please."
"Dekha? Phir bhool gaye," she said with a sad face. [See? You forgot again?]
Arnav didn't know what he forgot.
She hit his chest and said, "She was standing with you for ten minutes and you forgot everything."
"I am really sorry," he said sincerely.
She pouted.
"Khushi, ek baar. Aakhri baar." [Khushi, just once. Last time.]
"Phir Khushi?" [Again Khushi?]
He understood what she was expecting.
She pushed him and when his hold on her loosened, she tried to move away. Before she could, he held her tightly again. He rolled over and came above her. He pinned her hands over her head and looked at her.
"Kya baat hai? Aaj meri jaan sherni mood mein hai?" [What is the matter? Today my jaan is in a lioness mood?]
When he said 'jaan', she wanted to smile but controlled it.
He searched her face and asked, "Oye sherni, kya kiya tu ne meri jaan ko?" [Oye sherni, what did you do to my jaan?]
She bit her tongue to control her smile.
Even thought, her lips didn't let out her smile, her eyes did. Arnav saw the twinkle in her eyes and knew that she was trying hard to control herself.
"If you don't speak well with me, then I will..."
"You will...?"
"Tickle you," he replied and tickled her.
She couldn't control it anymore. She laughed and asked him to stop. He didn't.
"Arnav, stop. Arnav, please. Bas karo," she said as happy tears leaked through her eyes.
He stopped and wiped her tears.
"I love you, jaan," he said and kissed her forehead.
"I love you too, Arnav."
"Achcha, ab mera naam yaad aaya?" [so, now you remember my name?]
"Matlab?" [Means?]
"Last night it was jaan and baby... Aur ab Arnav?" [And now it is Arnav?]
Did she call him like that? Her cheeks and her nose coloured. He kissed her red nose making it turn redder, if that was even possible.
He noticed her confused and shocked expression and said, "Don't think too much. You really said that." He moved away from her and said, "We have to go. Get up."
He picked up the mug and finished the rest of the coffee.
While he was drinking the coffee, Khushi kissed his cheek and said, "I love you, baby."
Before he could react, she ran to the garden.
When he came to his senses a minute later, she was nowhere to be found. He searched for her and found her near the roses.
He hugged her from behind and asked, "What are you doing here?"
"Can I take one?" she asked him as she covered his hand with hers.
"All of it is ours. You can take how much ever you want."
"I want only one." She plucked a red rose from one of the plants and said, "Sorry, dear plant. Papa ko manaana hai. Issiliye." [I have to convince papa. That is why.]
An amused smile lit Arnav's face as he heard her talking with the plant.
