I consider SRK's role in Devdas to be one of his best, so I don't think he has failed there. Aamir doesn't really do historical roles but from the few he did, he did them very well. I think the Khans choose to not do period films because I feel its much tougher for those films to do well in the box office. And box office dictates standing in bollywood.

Amitabh Bachchan did Mard (set in British rule era). It was a hit. He was a freedom fighter in Desh Premee and that was hit too.

So in a way he was successful in period films too.

Though his costume/period/fantasy drama Ajooba failed.

I'm not much of a period film fan. I enjoyed Joda Akbar but that movie was too long 🥱
