thanks ladies, here is part one!
He looked at her putting on her accessories as if they were alien to her. She was running a hand through her long strands when their eyes met in the mirror. She smiled slightly. He had brought her here. He didn't tell her how they had met or why he was doing all this for her. She figured it was because they both were from royal familes and their fathers were good friends. She recalled Brijraj who they had said was her father was telling her Udayveer would take good care of her.
The ring on her finger was a family heirloom according to what Unnati had told her. Their mother had adored Manyata and decided she would have it when she was older. Manyata realized this meant the late maharani probably wanted her to marry Udayveer but right now she didn't remember him or anyone else in her family for that matter. They all seemed familiar but she could not recall any memory of them with her.
He had stepped out of the room. He opened his palm and looking longingly at the object. He remembered placing it on her neck nearly a year ago. This horrible incident had changed everything. She didn't know him or anyone else for that matter. She was a shadow of her real self.
Alone in the room, Manyata turned around to look at the scar on her upper back. She wondered how old the scar was and if it would ever go away. She sighed. She made sure she looked presentable.
She took a deep breath and walked out to join Udayveer.
He realized she was coming and hid away the object. He would consult the doctor if he could tell her anything after consluation was done.
"Chalein princess?," he asked.
She merely nodded.
They sat in the backseat together. Udayveer smiled thinking of the first time they had sat together in a car. How she had struggled and screamed at him. Today it was very different from that day almost two years ago. They had ridden horses, shared car rides and even a bike ride here and there since that fateful day he had brought her back to the rajmahal.
The couple sat together but both were lost in thoughts. They could have been in different rooms for all that mattered. The driver noticed this for the usual feisty and talkative twosome seemed kilometers apart instead of in the same car.
They arrived at their destination. Manyata tucked a strand behind her ear and stepped out before anyone else could open the door for her. Udayveer smiled to himself before turning composed again and started to lead her inside the hospital.
The nurse took her name and found her information . She turned to look at Udayveer after she had Manyata seated inside.
"How are you related to the patient sir?," she asked.
He turned slightly to make sure she wasn't paying attention.
"I'm her husband," he whispered.
The nurse nodded with understanding and went to inform the doctor. Udayveer turned to great the doctor.
"Hello Mr. Singh. How are you doing today?," he inquired.
He tried to smile at the older man.
"I am just hoping you can help us," he stated.
The doctor put an assuring hand on his shoulder.
"Let me examine her then we will talk," he said.
Udayveer nodded and stepped aside.
The doctor flashed light in her eyes and asked her some questions and she answered them the best she could.
Dr. Thakkar stepped out of the exam room and indicated for Udayveer to follow him.
"What do you think should be done?," Udayveer inquired.
"The brain is a mystery Mr. Singh. However it does not mean we cannot solve it. Studies have shown being in familiar surroundings can help one remember but there is no exact science to it. We do not want to pressurize her mind too much. She cannot be overloaded with information. Let her find the truth out in bits and pieces. I understand you brought here also because you both are in danger in India right now?," he inquired.
Udayveer nodded.
" We came here for her treatment. However according to what you are telling me I have to let her be in danger again to remember her life?"
"Not exactly danger. She needs something to be that spark in her memory she can recover them. However it is not an overnight event. She may remember bits and pieces. If she has any fears about remembering, we need to dissolve those. Try to talk to her about that. Has she felt familiar with you? Does she have nightmares or headaches?," Dr. Thakkar inquired.
" She hasn't told me anything but I have noticed her sleeping more deeply. She is quiet. She was never this way before," he stated solemnly.
"Today I have lodged some questions. Maybe the circuits in her mind will spark something. Bring her back if anything changes. We'll do more testing if necessary. For now start with objects or pictures. Just be careful not to pressure her," the doctor advised.
"All right doctor. I'll start on this right away. I'll be sure to let you know if there is any progress. Thanks for seeing her on short notice," he said as he got up and shook the doctor's hand.
"It was my pleasure. I hope she recovers soon. We have to wait and watch," the doctor stated.
Manyata was puzzled about some of the questions the doctor had asked her. The assessment part when she had to walk around and look straight at him seemed routine but why did he ask her if she was married? Wasn't that already in her file. She had looked up a few things about herself when someone had left a file by her bedside the week before. However before she got very far, a flustered young doctor came and picked it up and left.
She shook her head. She had only answered a few questions right because she had somehow heard or seen the answer in the past week from some source or the other.
Udayveer was outside the exam room and flashed her a smile.
" Let's go Manyata. We'll talk in the car," he stated.
She looked after him puzzled.
They sat in the car.
"So what did the doctor say?," she inquired.
"Your recovery is possible. There is no exact science but I am sure when we return to India you will remember something," he stated firmly.
She sighed and turned to look at the window.
Usually he wouldn't be able to see her so quiet. He would pull her back to him and tease her somehow.
He needed to talk to Unnati tonight. He very badly wanted to give her the object in his pocket now. However he knew now that wasn't the right time.
