"Rashmika, I am so sorry but Hindi films are just not for you", says Shobhaa De after watching Cocktail 2

Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna’s Cocktail 2 may be enjoying a strong run at the box office, but not everyone is impressed. Author and columnist Shobhaa De has shared a brutally honest review of the film, criticizing its storyline, performances, and overall execution, even as the romantic drama crossed the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide within six days of release.

Shobhaa De Calls The Story ‘Absurd’

Taking to Instagram, Shobhaa De posted a video review after watching Cocktail 2. Comparing it to the 2012 cult favourite Cocktail, she made it clear that the sequel failed to recreate the same magic.

According to De, the film lacked a solid narrative and meaningful storytelling. She described the plot as confusing and unrealistic, questioning its direction and emotional depth. The veteran columnist also took a dig at the film’s messaging, calling it filled with superficial life lessons and overused clichés.

One of her biggest criticisms was the central love triangle, which revolves around two women competing for Shahid Kapoor’s character. She felt the story offered very little nuance and relied heavily on outdated romantic tropes.

What She Said About Shahid, Kriti And Rashmika

While De was critical of the film overall, she did have a few positive things to say about some of the cast members.

She called Shahid Kapoor the best part of the film, although she jokingly remarked that he could use a different hairstyle. Kriti Sanon also received praise from De, who appreciated both her screen presence and performance.

However, Rashmika Mandanna did not fare as well in the review. De stated that Hindi cinema may not be the right space for the actress, making it one of the sharpest remarks from her video review.

Interestingly, the real star of the film for De was not any actor but the picturesque Italian destination of Sicily. She said she wished the film had featured even more of its stunning locations.

Box Office Remains Strong Despite Mixed Reactions

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences, Cocktail 2 has continued to perform steadily at the ticket windows. The film has earned Rs 102.76 crore gross worldwide in just six days.

Its domestic gross currently stands at Rs 78.76 crore, while overseas markets have contributed Rs 24 crore. After a strong opening weekend, the film maintained a stable hold during weekdays, collecting Rs 6.75 crore net on both Monday and Tuesday before adding another Rs 5 crore net on Wednesday.

Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 serves as a spiritual successor to the beloved 2012 film starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty.
