Eid ul Adha Mubarak!

Eid ul-Adha (Arabic: 'Idu l-'A??a) or "Eid-u'z-Zuha" "Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Eid" is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. The meat is divided into three equal parts to be distributed to others. The family retains one third of the share, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors, and the other third is given to the poor & needy.

Eid ul-Adha is the latter of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims, whose basis comes from Sura 2 (Al-Baqara) ayah 196 in the Qur'an. Like Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha begins with a Wajib prayer of two Raka'ah followed by a sermon (khu?bah).

The word "Eid" appears in Sura al-Mai'da ("The Table Spread," Chapter 5) of the Qur'an, meaning 'solemn festival'.

Eid ul-Adha is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the 12th and the last Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah (?? ?????) of the lunar Islamic calendar. Eid ul-Adha celebrations start after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months & 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan, i.e. Eid-ul-Fitr. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.

The days of tashreeq

In the ShariAh of our beloved Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) the sacrifice of an animal has been recognised as a form of worship only during three days of the month of Dhul Hijjah, namely the 10th, 11th and 12th of the month.

On these days, the pilgrims complete their rites, Muslims continue with their 'Eid celebrations, and are prohibited to fast.

"The days of tashreeq are days of eating, drinking and mentioning Allah." [Muslim]

Sacrifice

This is one of the rituals of Islam prescribed in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and according to the consensus of the Muslims.

This is to commemorate the unparalleled sacrifice offered by Prophet Sayyidina Ibrahim (Alayhis salaam) when he, in pursuance to a command of Allah conveyed to him in a dream, prepared himself to slaughter his beloved son Sayyidinah Ismail (Alayhis salaam) and actually did so, but Allah Almighty, after testing the ultimate limits of his submission, sent down a sheep and saved his son from the logical fate of slaughter.

The details of this most difficult trial of Prophet Sayyidina Ibrahim (Alayhis salaam) are described in the Quran:

Al Quran (Surah-37:100-109)

100. "O my Lord! Grant me (Ibrahim) a righteous (son)!"

101. So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.

102. Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"

103. So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah., and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),

104. We called out to him "O Abraham!

105. "Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

106. For this was obviously a trial-

107. And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:

108. And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

109. "Peace and salutation to Abraham!"

110. Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

Allah (Subhanuhu Wa Ta'ala) says

"Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only)" [Holy Quran 108:2]

Hadith (Sahih Bukhari Book #15, Hadith #71)

Narrated Al-Bara' ibn 'Aazib (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivering a Khutba saying,

"The first thing to be done on this day (first day of 'Id ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our Sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions)."

Eid ul Adha Mubarak!

May Allah bless the entire Muslim Ummah and keep all of us guided to the straight path,

May Allah help us to learn and spread the precious teachings of Islam. On this joyous occasion of Eid ul Adha May Allah bless you with happiness and grace your home with warmth and peace.

Rumi dear, i never thought to see this Eid post but you did it. Thanks for your effort.
Hopefully our friends here got to know about Eidhul Adha and its significance to Muslims and will enhance understandings and avoid any misconception among us so that we all can live harmony side by side in spite of our different religous views.
In addition to your post :

Islamic month starts at end of the day, on the day when lunar crescent comes into view after the new moon that can be seen with a naked eye. It is seen that the observability depends on a number of factors such as:

  • Natural climatic conditions
  • Height of moon at the end of the day
  • Proximity of moon to the sun during sunset
  • The time between the sunset and moonset
  • Pollution level in the atmosphere
  • Accuracy of the eye of viewer

So the visibility of moon at any place on earth differs and therefore this festival of Eidhul Adha is celebrated on different days (1 day earlier or 1 day later) in several places all over the world.

In Malaysia, Eidhul Adha is going to be on the 17th Nov. Sacrifices is in the form of slaughtering cows (please our Hindu friends lets not get offended), sheeps or goats. Sacrificing of 1 cow can be shared by 7 individuals where as sheep/goats is only for 1 individual.
