Ramanand Sagar’s son Anand Sagar Chopra passes away at 84 in Mumbai

Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, son of veteran filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away on February 13, 2026. He was 84. The family confirmed the news through a public statement and expressed deep sorrow over his demise.
According to reports, Anand had been unwell for nearly a decade and was battling Parkinson’s disease. His last rites were held in Mumbai at Hindu Smashan Bhumi, Pavan Hans, at 4.30 pm on Thursday. Family members, close friends and members of the film fraternity gathered to pay their final respects. Actor Bhagyashree was among those seen arriving for the funeral.
In a note shared online, the family wrote, “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our dear father Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra." They also shared details of the funeral and added, “Your prayers and blessings for his peaceful journey are sincerely appreciated. Sagar family.”
Anand Sagar Chopra is survived by his wife Nisha Sagar and their children. A part of the well known Sagar family, he continued the creative legacy established by his father. He directed the 2008 television adaptation of Ramayan, revisiting a story that had earlier shaped Indian television history.
The original Ramayan, created by Ramanand Sagar, aired in 1987 and became one of the most watched mythological shows in the country. It played a significant role in defining television content during that period.
Apart from his work in television, Anand was also associated with film production. He backed projects such as Aankhen, Armaan and the television fantasy series Alif Laila.
Ramanand Sagar, who began his career as a writer in the 1940s with films like Barsaat, later directed films including Charas and Prem Bandhan. In the 1980s, he shifted to television and created shows such as Shri Krishna and Vikram Aur Betaal, leaving a lasting impact on Indian storytelling.
With Anand Sagar’s passing, another chapter of the Sagar family legacy comes to a close.
