True. I wish there were meaningful episodes like you suggested , dedicated to maestros, classical based theme, etc. The songs/costumes of contestants, the stage all looks like a disco club to me :)

on second thought I think it is OK not to attempt S-J and Madan Mohan songs because I am sure they will be butchered to no end and we will have fans here claiming it was better than original .

From Amar Prem I have my favourite "Raina Beeta Jaaye". Nihira would have done a good job I think.

ah!!I see that some of my all time favs have already been named(tasveer tere dil mein,o saojna and na jiya laage na)😊...As to who can sing these....pretty tough one,I doubt if anyone in the current generation can really do full justice to them..Maybe Nihira cld try them out and manage to pull it off reasonably well (if she practises hard)....Shreya Ghoshal can alos do a gud job with them with enuf practise...I personally don't think anyone else has the combination of talent, good voice and enuf feel factor in their voice to pull them off/even attempt it.
Some of my other favs are
aaja re pardesi(Madhumati)..a simple tune actually, but the sweetness of Lata's voice and the way she has sung it is unmatched.
another all time fav of mine-Aa aare mitwa from Anand Mahal sung by Yesudas...a very difficlt song with tremendous range sung with apparent ease by Yesudas......it has Salilda's trademark jumping notes throut and also a classical touch...a must listen...can anyone today dare attempt this song(even in bits & pieces thru a recording).....maybe Sonu Nigam cld give it a try...or maybe Hemachandra
posting the link of this sog below(in the next post) coz it changes the format of the whole post 😳
ae dil kahan teri manzil from Maya...a seemingly simple song with jumping notes again....But,the antara is relatively simple.......again the way Lata has sung is amazing
aha rimjhim ke yeh pyare pyare(Usne kaha tha)
chand raat tum ho saath (Half tcket)
These r two songs set to prove that the saddest songs need not necesarily be the sweetest....😊..these songs sound so melodious and so beguilingly simple.....Only when one actually gets down to singing will one realise the small nuances that the songs are filled with.....To start the "kya karen" after chand raat tum ho saath in the right place is easier said han done.....😆😆
as for rimjhim ke yeh pyare pyare, the full song keeps behaving like an erractic seesaw...hawa kahe "kya aaaa"..goes unpredictably one step higher than what the listener wld expect......the song is filled with these kind of unpredictable jumps😆😆......quite a task to sing it right without going off sur😊
for the last two songs,Anwesha cld probably give them a try..guess she might be able to pull them off
I have hv another fav of salilda..a non filmy song-beet jaat barkha rut sung by his daughter Antara chowdhury. This song used to be telecast on DD many times during those days when DD was the only channel available and hence dared to telecast good music without worrying abt TRPs ...It is a lovely song beautifully sung by her...Cldn't find the link..If anyone finds it,lz post it......song is in desh raag(i think)😊

You knoe Kirti Salil da's father served in Indian army under British rule and he had excellent collection of western classical polyvinyl records which were the sort of first exposure of Salil da to western music.
I read on his site that he used to look at tea gardens in Assam listening to these records endlessly, he also wrote many anti British poems , composed tunes for them and was jailed then. It is said that if one has to understand his life he has to see this as pre 1950 and post 50 era.
BTW fantastic input like always \kirti.

And you haven't even heard his bengali compositions!

As Ashaji said anybody could sing any songs ...gavane wala chahiye. She challenges all the mentors that if they give her a contestant and in a month's time she can make them sing Rafi sahab and Lataji's song.
What do you think about that?

Bengali Mass Songs of Awakening and Protest
Click here for the list of songs

Salil's political thinking and the awareness was shaped during his childhood in Assam tea gardens when his doctor father frequently confronted the British tea garden managers and took part in the anti-British rallies such as burning all his British clothes. His father also frequently organized and staged plays using the lowly paid coolies and down-trodden workers of the British owned tea gardens. Salil later admitted that more than 50 years ago, during the British occupation, it was unthinkable and quite courageous for his father to organize such plays portraying the social exploitation by the British. Maybe this is when Salil's strong socialist feelings took shape and later on this prompted him to write these songs and join IPTA (mentioned below). He wrote about the landless peasants, about the corrupt British justice, and about social exploitation of the poor by the rich. He called people to fight back, warned people not to give up their struggle and always remain alert. Most of his songs composed from approximately mid-'40s till the early fifties very often expressed his anti-British and anti-colonial feelings and they were songs of protest, songs of revolution and songs of hope for the workers of the land.

Salil later became involved with the left-wing movement and joined the IPTA (Indian Peoples Theater Association or as the Bengalees know it 'Bharotiya Ganonatya Sangha'). He wrote plays, wrote poems and composed numerous songs. IPTA became the revolutionary platform for the masses and Salil took his songs and his plays to the villages. Even now IPTA songs are sung by Bengalees worldwide. Just after Salil's death several ex-IPTA members and Salil's contemporaries wrote about him, his contribution to IPTA and recalled those glorious days. Fortunately, I have collected most of these articles and magazines.

Much later, in his second phase, Salil formed the Bombay Youth Choir. This was a huge success with all the then famous singers such as Manna Dey, Mukesh, Lata, Dwijen Mukherjee, the actor Asim Kumar, Ruma Ganguly (Kishore's wife then) and host of others. Initially Naushad presided and later Anil Biswas. Salil composed new songs for the group and got lyricists like Prem Dhawan and Shailendra to write for him. Those were indeed heady days. Several songs from BYC were used later in his films.

Salil always remained a strong socialist and was always a keen observer and critic of the social injustice in our society. In the seventies and later he composed some more mass songs but it is widely regarded that Salil's compositions from the '40s and early '50s remain some of the best compositions in the Bengali modern music.

Since each and every song was composed with some purpose and since each song makes a forceful statement, I have tried to add comments to each song to give you some idea. I have tried also to order them by year, but it may not be accurate all the time.
