Look at his compositions: need so much of range, diversity and riyaz to sing. Most of the times they were laced with complex swara notations, so much that so many years down the line I haven?t seen many attempting them on stage. True gems: true blend of Indian classical and nuances of Western music. Wish there was one episode dedicated to each of these masteros like Shankar Jikishan, Madan Mohan, Sr Burman and Naushad Saab?!

Make whatever combination of duet or solo let me know who you think can sing them (some top creations of Salil da in my opinion):

  1. Tasveer teri dil me (who will sing the antara)

This one in my book is as high as tasveer teri dil me: a masterpiece from an unheard movie (dabbaband for long) chakravuyh, look at the notes jumping out of octave every now and then:\

Ok IMO ...
1) Tasveer Teri Dil Mein - I dont think anyone from the current lot can attempt this! The mukhra sounds so simple but the complexity is in the antara! What a beautiful composition !
2) Na Jaane Kyun - ANother one with a simple mukhra and complex antara but i think this is attemptable as it is more a feel-based song!
3) Kahin baar yunhi - Not sure here ... The guys in C2009 are not so great so...
4) Ghadi Ghadi - Lovely song! All songs from Madhumati are excellent! One of the best albums ever! All kinds of tunes ranging from the simple 'Zulmi sang aankh ladi' to the folksy 'Bichua' to the complex 'Aja re Pardesi'
To add to the above list -
5) O Sajana Barkha Bahar aayi - Raga Khamaj ... sounds so simple yet so difficult to sing!
6) Rajanigandha Phool Tumhare - The mukhra itself is quite complex!
7) Jaago Mohan pyaare - Think of film songs in Bhairav and this one comes immdiately to mind!
8) Na Jiya laage na and songs from Anand
Will add as i think of more ...

all of these songs are excellent, look at complex antara. Alka once said she wouldnt like to attempt na jiya lage na live ever ( AFAI have read this is raag malgunji) another one I know on same raag is ghar aaja ghir aaye ( R D Burman),

You knoe Kirti Salil da's father served in Indian army under British rule and he had excellent collection of western classical polyvinyl records which were the sort of first exposure of Salil da to western music.
I read on his site that he used to look at tea gardens in Assam listening to these records endlessly, he also wrote many anti British poems , composed tunes for them and was jailed then. It is said that if one has to understand his life he has to see this as pre 1950 and post 50 era.
BTW fantastic input like always \kirti.

Are you asking in SRGMP 2009? I am sure Anwesha of CU can attempt them & she will do well. Not sure about SRGMP 2009 contestants.

True. I wish there were meaningful episodes like you suggested , dedicated to maestros, classical based theme, etc. The songs/costumes of contestants, the stage all looks like a disco club to me :)
