Salil da's merit lies in making songs laced with complex swara notation yet they sounded smooth and rounded, only when you sit down to sing them or play on an instrument you realise how tough they are. At times he used raagas like na jiya lage na, aaj koi nahi apna, madhumati songs at times he was completely western in outlook like itna na mujhse tu pyar badha ( as you said Mozart symphony ), tasveer teri dil me, all the experiments which were later used extensively used by stalwarts right north to South like vocal choir, electric organ, jumping notes out of octave, harmonic progression, extensive use of chord structures to develop the feel, use of 7/9 notes over root chords were done by Salil da.
Rajkapoor once said Salil could play any thing fron flute to fleimnco, piano to kalimba and accordian.

To sing songs of Salil da one needs zabardast riyaz, range and very good samajh of scale and taala.

He was one of the many MDs who were on Lata's side always and never believed that Ashaji cld sing as well as Lata....wrt range, scale and taal,I personally think Ashaji is as gud ......Salilda favoured Lataji more...probably idolised her,coz he favuored her over Rafi saab openly once during a disagreement.

In the 1960s, Rafi was not on good terms with Lata Mangeshkar, the most sought-after female playback singer in Bollywood, over royalty issues. Lata wanted Rafi to back her in demanding a half-share from the five percent song royalty that the film's producer conceded to select composers.[11] But Rafi took a diametrically opposite view, and believed that a playback singer's claim on the filmmaker ended with the payment of agreed fee for the song. During the recording of Tasveer Teri Dil Mein (Maya, 1961), Lata lost her cool with Rafi in a certain passage of the song. Rafi felt belittled, as music director Salil Chowdhury sided with Lata.[12] The situation worsened when Lata Mangeshkar declared that she would no longer sing with Rafi. Rafi stated that he was only so keen to sing with Lata as she was with him.[12] Later, at the insistence of S.D.Burman, the two decided to make up and sing duets, but on a personal level, they were not on good terms.

.Some of his other favs included Talat .....He also favoured Rafi saab over Kishore kumar.....because he liked classically trained singers over untrained ones
" Kishore Kumar had not formally trained in music, so that Salil Chowdhury, for his intellectual Bengali part, was not even prepared to give this actor-singer a hearing, once he got to know that Kishore lacked musical grounding. Kishore Kumar was Sheila Ramani's hero in Bimal Roy's Naukri (1954).

YET Salil Chowdhury, as the new phenom among our composers then, was dismissive of Kishore as: "I have not heard a single song rendered by you, so how could I possibly let you render my song in Naukri!"
Saying that, Salil was on the point of summoning Hemant Kumar to sing Chhota sa ghar hoga in place of our already unemployed hero of Naukri: Kishore Kumar! It was only after Kishore Kumar virtually begged Salil Chowdhury to hear him out -- as one having met, already, the intricate tonal demands of master composer Khemchand Prakash in his very first song for films -- for Bombay Talkies' Ziddi (1948): Marne kee duaaen kyun maangoon jeene kee tamanna kaun kare -- that Salil Chowdhury relented in the matter of Chhota sa ghar hoga.

"To Dada Burman goes the credit for having spotted the spark in the boy so early. Each one of us composers otherwise underestimated the tremendous potential of Kishore," admitted Salil, adding, "Not until the vocal results Kishore gave me, some 18 years later, in Gulzar's Mere Apne, with Koi hota jis ko apna hum apna keh lete yaaron, did I get a real idea of how totally I had misjudged the depth and dimension of the lad as a singer." Having had reservations about Kishore da as pointed out by you R & R Kishore did sing some great numbers for Salil da like guzar jaye din din : a song written Salil da all over, fleeting scale, lurking melancholy..

Nice to see a discussion centred on Salil Choudhuri. When I hear his music, I feel so refreshed, so much at peace. Though I regard SD as my most favourite MD, when I hear Salilda, my belief gets shaky.

One of my many favourite Salilda songs would be O Sajana - I regard it as the most perfect composition in Hindi films which will appeal to classical experts as much as light music lovers. Of course, Lata's voice also plays a big role - it is sweeter than sweet.
Most difficult Salilda songs would have to be 'Na jeeya laage na" and "Tasveer tere dil mein" but there must be many more that I can't recall at this instant.
Lata herself said in a documentary on her that she found it very difficult to sing Salilda's songs. She said he would challenge her with more and more difficult songs. I like this relationship between MD and singer. A singer should feel challenged by compositions.
I do wish Salilda had used Kishore more. Not only 'Chota sa ghar hoga' but 'Koi hota' from Mere Apne have been sung so well by him.
And of course, Salilda should have used Asha too - she could have taken any challenge.
Has anyone heard Salilda's "saawan ki raaton mein aisa bhi hota hain"? This is also a BEAUTIFUL song!

Good God, I just realised there are two songs composed by Salil Choudhury both called Jeeya laage na. I was referring to "Na Jeeya Laage Na" from the film Anand. This is a composition par excellence.

The other one would more appropriately be called "Nis din nis din" instead of "Jeeya laage na". It's a good song but not a great one in my opinion:

I saw a Malayalam movie 'Chemmeen' as a kid barely understanding what was going on, on the screen and at the end did not like the movie at all as it was hopeless tragedy and I felt that everyone was just crying and doing nothing better. The only thing about the movie that remained with me were the songs! I remember humming 'Kadalinakare' with my dad for weeks afterwards and my dad wud hum 'Maanasamaine' whenever in a melancholy mood.
Years later i learnt that Salilda was the music director for this film and I was pleasantly surprised and even more so when i heard that Manna Dey had sung 'Maanasamaine varu'! 😊
Pls do check out the songs of this movie!
Am assuming the link works 😊 ... I cant check it myself as its blocked at work!
