My experience made me think that both ways should get considered: the 'in situ'- experiences and what one can learn in school (for the latter, I know how much it is shaped by the teachers' skills, the curriculum and the current politics (books' contents can be changed quickly... a lot of (tax) money goes into the changing of narrations, I noticed).
Last (but in no way least) it's what your parents give you as an example that will shape your thinking about the world, other people and yourself.
Ah, yes, don't understimate the intelligence of children to detect lies... so, using honesty may be a good advice...
