barely any actors watched it
Well, it makes sense there was no big premier event. Diljit is out of India. But even Sardar Udham and Shershah which were also OTT releases got more industry support. Is it because Abbas Zafar has some feud going on with Aditya Chopra? Don't know! 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Five minutes into the film, Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh) asks goons on the bus, "Hamari Galti Kya Hai." The goons unabashedly beat Jogi and unapologetically say, "Tu Sardaar Hai Yehi Teri Galti Hai (being a Sikh is your mistake)."
This was the reality of October 31, 1984, after the assassination of the Indian Prime Minister by two Sikh men. An irresponsible statement like "When a big tree falls, the earth shakes." by her son changed public sentiment against Sikhs overnight. Taking advantage of the brain-washed masses, many politicians tried to channel their greed by fuelling the massacre and eliminating Sikhs from Delhi to seek a higher political position.
In the film, a politician, beautifully played by Kumud Mishra, gathers cops to get a voter list of the area, mark all Sikhs with S, and cross those names in red by the morning. Rawinder Chautala (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), a cop, saw Joginder Singh's (Jogi) name on the list. Both are childhood friends and from there start the journey of him and Jogi to save family, friends, and fellow neighbors from a massacre that killed thousands of Sikhs.
An excellent script written by Ali Abbas Jaffar and Sukhmani Sadana and beautifully directed by Ali Abbas Jaffar is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that in parts reminds of "Argo" with the human heist in the truck. Ali Abbas Zafar's direction brought reality, capturing the fear and anxiety the characters were going through. As an audience, you emotionally invest in the film and want Jogi to succeed in his quest and see the Gallie No. (Lane) 6 residents survive their ordeal. Could some stereotypes and love angles be avoided? Probably.
Nobody can play the role of Jogi as Diljit Dosanjh, which needs a masterful portrayal of a regular guy having to step up and become a hero in a highly abnormal situation based on a true story. In any Bollywood film, this role can become over dramatic, loud, and obnoxious stereotype (hello Sunny Deol), but Diljit plays a rather soft-spoken and muted character making it believable. Diljit may be known for comedy roles, but his performance in Punjab 1984, Udta Punjab, Soorma, and now Jogi proves to cast an actor like him brings a realistic version of someone who deals with traumatic life events Sikhs have gone through with soul and heart. I am sure the audience would like to see Diljit in more movies to bring Sikhs as mainstream heroes who wear turbans.
I highly recommend this movie.
After watching this movie, ask this question - shouldn't the 1984 anti-Sikh RIOTS be called GENOCIDE?
Disclaimer: Review was not by me. It was by someone I know with a filmmaking degree. Who has won an Emmy for creating new film editing technology!
Well looks like it is still trending at number 1 in India with close to zero support from the industry?
