Vegetarians and vegans must be willing to do extra homework before traveling. In major metropolitan cities, you will get options. But once you go off the beaten path to smaller regions, it becomes harder. Even if you stay at an expensive resort.

Veganism is a privileged rich people trend. 90% of the world relies on what is abundant and affordable. Many cultures even consume nose to tail so as to never waste anything. If you are vegan for ethical or sustainability reasons - some non-vegan local food can be more ethical and sustainable than mass-produced commercialized vegan stuff in the west. If you cannot respect how locals live and eat, you shouldn't travel.

I encourage people to follow what I call sensible veganism. Do your honest best to stay vegan. But make exceptions for travel, especially if someone will be hosting you or showing you around.

Sicily is a relatively large Mediterranean island. Surrounded by the ocean seafood is a major component of their food. They also rear many sheep and cattle. But Sicily is not a major producer of vegetables. They grow more fruits and nuts. And also, do not go to Italy if you wish to be vegan. They are a major cheese-producing nation. They take great pride in their cheesemaking culture and incorporate cheese into as many foods as possible. [Sidebar: Not that we are a tourist destination. But vegans should not come to Wisconsin. Dairy is a religion here.]

Sicilian blood oranges are a treasured and prized varietal of oranges. The other thing to note is that dessert in Europe is often a cheese and fruit plate with dessert wine and espresso. The other popular dessert in Sicily is cannoli (filled with sweet cheese). So anyone complaining about sliced fruit as dessert clearly is not a good traveler.

IDk what fruit she is complaining off. But anyone complaining about being served Sicilian blood oranges literally deserves to be slapped across the face till they come to their senses. Like bitch people are winning to pay obscene amounts for a can of San Pellegrino Arranciata Rosa. If you are complaining about getting those oranges fresh - you don't deserve to exist.

Not true. Most bread varieties tend to be vegan. Flour. Water. Salt. Leavening. Some enriched bread like brioche, challah, Japanese milk bread, will have butter or dairy for richness and softness. Egg breads and bread using egg wash exist but are less common.

The two popular breads in Italy are focaccia and ciabatta which are both vegan. Italians prefer olive oil to enrich bread vs dairy.

I think partly cos there is confusion amongst vegetarians themselves. Up until a few decades ago, people would classify themselves as vegetarians despite eating fish. I remember it was served on British Airways to me as a veg meal back then too..

I avoid getting into debates with people who think eating eggs is equivalent to eating life when they're just by products.🤔

Eggs are no worse than milk from a morality pov; whether it's the battery conditions/chicken being made to gain weight that their legs give way or male baby cows murdered for veal/female cows separated from their babies and fed hormones to produce pus filled milk at mass.

So she's a vegetarian at home but turns vegan when travelling to a country like Sicily?

I checked the rates and it's $850/day, maybe she expected them to hire an Indian chef specializing in vegan meals?

Any way if you're vegan and want variety in your food please don't travel unless absolutely necessary

If you need suggestions just say so. Honestly I have more trouble finding just natural, pure fat, gluten rich, butter, whole milk and non diet "enhanced" products than I do the tampered with for "my health" items ....

I didn't know what is gelatin. Someone of my community working at Walmart told me not to buy Activia yogurt as it has gelatin. Then I searched on internet about gelatin. Then realized most of the things here are non veg.

Yes I know about Turkish delight gummies too.

I think this is a failure to communicate plus minus inflexibility. Vegetarian means different things to different people: eggs or not, seafood or not, etc. Many Indians also throw in other things like no garlic or onion. For any one with multiple restrictions there is going to need to be detailed explanations and you may need to accept that your options will be limited.

Southern Italy has many vegetarian options, authentic Mediterranean diets are largely plant based. Especially in the south they even have several wonderful eggless pastas. As some one else pointed out, in southern Italy they frequently use olive oil as the fat base in their dishes unlike northern Italy where they more frequently use butter or lard. I don’t think anyone would have serious trouble finding true vegetarian food in Sicily. Finding exactly the kind of vegetarian food you want in Sicily maybe not - but if that’s what you must have at all times, well don’t go to Sicily.

So is Mira vegetarian or vegan? I assumed she was whining because she is vegan. Vegan food is hard to come by in Italy. But there is no dearth of vegetarian food. Clearly, she is eating cheese, so I don't know why she cannot eat arancini, bread, and eggless pasta.

Eating fish is not vegetarian but pescatarian.

Btw vegetarians, if you take medications in capsule form note that most contain gelatin derived from animals. You can get plant cellulose-based capsules. But those are not as easily available.
