Was Vaidehi's selfishness romanticized in Badrinath Ki Dulhania?

The character of Vaidehi was selfish and self-centered, and I don't mean because she chose career over love. But the way she went about it was so wrong. Breaking Badri's heart without a second thought for him. She could have told Badri, talked to him and if he would have disagreed she could have left him. But keeping him waiting for her on the wedding day was wrong on another level altogether.

Do you think the makers of the film tried to hard to evoke sympathy for her selfishness?

I don't know if it was romanticized or not. I saw Vaidehi as a coward but her cowardice was understandable. If at that time she would've said she didn't want to marry him no one would've listened to her. They all would've blackmailed her and Badri's dad might've physically forced her as well. This was before Badri had any character growth so he lacked a spine in front of his father. Vaidehi really understood that part. She tried to be happy about the marriage until the very last moment. So she probably made the decision to not go through with it at the last moment as well. At that stage if she told Varun she is not marrying him then chances are his dad would've shot her on the spot like he actually threatened to later on for embarrassing them. I just felt bad Vaidehi left her family all alone to deal with the repercussions of her running away.

Can I say that both the characters were unlikable? 🤔

Vaidehi was a selfish girl who didnt have the decency of saying it on Badri's face that she cannot marry him for so and so reasons.

And Badri, although a nice guy at heart. Is way too violent. Yes, love "changes" him by the end of the film. But shoving women into one's car trunk and strangling them is too much for me to take

Moreover, the two make an unrealistic couple. Do you think a girl like Vaidehi and a guy like Badri would be a good match for each other in real life??

Haha, good point. I think not.

I never saw Vaidehi as selfish at all.

It was insensitive of her to hurt Badri. I agree she should have told him. But considering the patriarchal nature of the family and Badri's inability to stand up for himself, it is understandable why she needed to do what she did.

My interpretation is that she didn't tell him because she was either afraid he would plead her to stay or she wanted to give him a chance to move on.

She got her penance tho

When he threw her in the trunk of his car. She took her lumps like a man 👍🏼

Vaidehi was totally selfish and used Badri to get her sister married off. Badri thought that the only obstacles to their marriage was her sister and the dowry issue and she didn't offer any explanations to the counter. He was also sort of a male Geet. She had told him multiple times that she didn't want to get married. But he was blindly optimistic that he could change her mind. Plus he had been brought up to think that he's something "special" and any girl should consider herself lucky to get his attention. Living with her in Singapore in close quarters made him realize that she's also a catch. Many reviewers at that time rightly pointed out Badri's patriarchal mindset which led to the kidnapping. But stayed mum on Vaidehi's selfishness.

Vaidehi was selfish agreed...but once anyone who sees it from her perspective might give her a benifit of doubt. She was being pressed from all sides. Badri was helping her for his motive of admiration. Even he wasn't selfless. The small town big dreamers have it way tougher that just saying no and walking out. Had she said No she would be emotionally coerced into marrying him. She knew that so she chose her dreams. Moreover Badri wasn't strong enough to stand up to his father for her dreams. Agreed breaking his heart wasn't the best thing, but she actually didn't have much of a choice.

I won't be commenting on the film because I haven't watched it completely. However, from what little I've watched, I don't think it was handled well, tbh.

Yes, the girl had her ambitions but why did she lead the guy on? Then she ditched him at the altar?

Come on girl, brave up and just gather the support and trust of the guy you love and share your dreams with him. If he discourages you, then just break up with him. Gosh.

But I suppose that would be a different story.

Yes, it was wrong the way they garnered justification for what she did. She always knew that Badri and his family is orthodox and thus she should not have let matters reach the altar, if she wanted to break up with him, she could have done that in a graceful way instead of dumping him in the altar and making him a mockery.

I think Humpty was a better movie than Badri, even though Humpty was not very established and educated he and has family were really very good human beings.
