Can sad songs be fast?

A posting made by Shehzaadi on another thread got me thinking - Can sad songs be fast? Usually, fast songs do not convey the feeling of pathos, sadness, loneliness, separation or can they?

One example I can think of in recent times is "Chalte Chalte" from the movie of the same name. I love the lyrics but I always wonder, why couldn't the pace be slower? Why did Jatin-Lalit choose to make it so fast?:

Pyaar humko bhi hai, pyaar tumko bhi hai
To yeh kya silsile ho gaye
Bewafa hum nahin, bewafa tum nahin
To kyoon itne gile ho gaye
Chalte chalte kaise yeh faasle ho gaye
Kya pata kahan hum chale

Well I guess the knew Jal song Sajni is another example... its such a sad song and even the video (which is SOO nice) is slow yet its fast

Sonpan very nice song. This is a song with lots of rythem and beat, not really a fast number. There are several modern songs with a fast beat that are supposed to be sad numbers. Especially when they remix it.

Nice topic Sahana...

A composition is said to be good when the song brings the feeling in us what the lyrics is trying to say...thats what i personally feel. then there's picturisation which also has to be taken into account. U cannot hv a foot tapping composition as a sad song. It will not give us the same feel that lyrics is trying to say...yes agree it could be nice listening to being rhythmic. but i feel such a song as far as conveying the objective and meaning is concerned, will fall short of.

For a sad song i personally get attached with lyrics..
lekin If the song is fast then music with be on fast notes and it will carry lyrics faster..
For me the soothing effect will be gone from the song..

The song Ya Ali from Gangster is again a sad song with fast rhythm.. When we associate the song with the lyrics and listen to them, one would definitely feel the song!! The rhythm maynot give the proper effect of the sad song, but the singer giving the feel to the song would give the needed effect..

Well it again is induvidual opinion... One may get the feel to the song listening to the tune and other may get the feel listening to the singer who emotes the lyrics..

The saddest song that I have heard in recent times and it really has the poewer to move me is quite a loud one.😆 But it really says it all . Tadap tadap from HDDCS, I like this loud yet sad number.

Well happy songs can be slow too, just as sad songs can be fast. It all depends on the song writer.

A movie director can make a happy song seem sad in a certain sketch and vice versa.

Yet ppl dont consider Ya Ali as a "sad" song.... i mean ppl like dnce to it AL the time... im sure halk the ppl dont know its a sd song.... could that be cause of the fast beat😕

Tadap Tadap is the ONLY song that gets t me everytime I listen to it... its soo nice yet sad😭
